FB: Duke 23, Wake Forest 17

What an amazing end to the regular season! First walkoff TD in Duke history. I have never seen a more resilient team. We can look so bad for so long - Wake, UNC, GT- then somehow flip a switch, make adjustments, more energy, and look almost invincible. We had I think four 4th qtr comebacks and were down double digits in several games. That is coaching! Diaz would be COY in any other year, but Lashlee deserves it. We should have won SMU, but could have lost NW and UNC so it probably evened out. So proud of this team and they were so fun to watch!

We forget this was a makeshift roster after mass exodus. Didn’t even have enough O lineman for the spring game!. Hopefully with a full year under their belt and some coaching stability, we can have some more quality transfers like Murphy, Nicholas, Charles, Howard and solid recruiting class. I think we should be ranked at 9-3. We didn’t have any top 25 wins, but all 3 losses were to good teams, and 2 may be in playoff.

I don’t think we’re that far off from being legitimate CFP contender. That is amazing to think about!

I was sitting RIGHT in front of where JoMo scored the TD, right on the goal line. My wife got tired of me telling her we should throw it to JoMo in this corner of the end zone. And then we did it!!!

Who had Duke with a better regular season record that Midnight Mike’s Texas A&M team?!!! Ha!

Makeshift roster, indeed. Incredible job by Manny in a short period of time.

I'm nominating Dakota Zientek of Clutch Points (whatever that may be) for the dimwitted journalism of the day, as she referred to Duke's winning score as coming from a Hail Mary pass. Either she didn't see the game (likely) or she's a devout Catholic. No other explanation. (there's a link from the DBR front page story)

I got home from Groves Stadium late and did not bother to watch Sportscenter. Is it true that Duke made #1 on the Top 10 plays? The Youtube Channel that posts them hasn't updated yet.

yep, it was #1, not that I stayed up until 3:30 a.m. to watch it, just checked it out now.

Haven’t seen Manny’s post-game PC yet. Here’s Wake’s HC Dave Clawson’s:

ETA: Manny —

Wow, that last two minutes of Clawson's post-game was sobering. Puts everything into context for what it means to be a head coach these days. No time off anymore. When you start to think about what the game is now, you really realize what a grind this must be, and how quickly some coaches and staff's must burn out, especially if you aren't winning....

yeah, good message for the oodles of staff bashers out there...Brewer takes a heaping pile of abuse on a lot of forums, but how easy was his job having lost his star QB to ND, top two running backs, top two tight ends and most of his OL?

I hope so. That was the best Hail Mary I’ve ever seen!
It was magnificent, but I wouldn't call it a Hail Mary, which is generally a big heave into a cluster of players near or in the end zone.

This was a great last second football play. The QB patiently surveyed the field, went through his progression, and then made a very accurate deep throw to a WR in full stride. The WR got open, made the catch, and eluded a potential tackler with a ballet twist.

Beautiful.

I was thinking it was a mistake to hold onto the ball that long. Maybe I was wrong.

This is a great post. Diaz not only had to pick up the pieces when frankly Duke football could have gone back into the abyss, but cobbled together a staff and a roster, and then repeatedly convinced this team to never give up when it would have been easy to take the losses and look toward next year.

The halftime speech vs. UNC was hall of fame caliber. It's possible this whole season would have played out differently with a loss in that game. In games like Wake, the team knew they could come back, and knew how to make winning plays.

Here's to never forgetting that second half turnaround vs. the Cheats.

Saw a graphic on ACCN, that the 2024 Blue Devils had 2 wins that came from overcoming 2nd half deficits of 14 points or more.

That compared to the previous 20 years of Duke football, where the record for overcoming such a deficit in the 2nd half was 1-106.

Great job by Manny, his staff, and the team! Never say die.

Hard to say. Someone else has to fall out of the top 25.

The only CFP ranked teams to lose are #2 Ohio State, #12 Clemson, and #17 Tulane. Maybe Tulane falls more than 8 places, but even if they do, the team that beat them (Memphis) has more votes in the AP and Coaches Polls than Duke, and might just replace them in the CFP.

The most likely candidates to drop out of the CFP top 25 -- if they lose later today -- are #20 Texas A&M (hosting #3 Texas at 7:30pm on ABC) and #24 Kansas State (playing at #18 Iowa State at 7:30pm on FOX).

#21 Missouri is hosting and playing unranked Arkansas right now on the SEC Network; it's scoreless in the 1st quarter. #22 UNLV hosts Nevada at 8pm ET on CBBSN. #23 Illinois and #25 Colorado have already won.

The coaches poll is out, and we're #27.

  • Every team with 0, 1, or 2 losses is ahead of us (except for Louisiana, at 31)
  • Every Power 4 team with 3 losses is ahead of us, with Syracuse coming in at #25
  • Every Power 4 team with 4 or more losses is behind us (except for Texas A&M, at 26)
  • Every non-Power 4 team with 3 or more losses is behind us

So essentially, we slotted in right at the bottom of the range where our record and conference affiliation would suggest. It's hard to argue that we should be above any teams with fewer losses than us (other than Louisiana), and being ahead of any of the 3-loss teams from major conferences (Alabama, South Carolina, Ole Miss, Clemson, Missouri, Illinois, Colorado, Syracuse) is a tough sell. I tend to agree with Texas A&M, Duke, and Tulane in some order for #26-28.

Pretty apparent that for Duke to be ranked at least in a year with several big name programs at 9-3, we need to be 10-2. If this was the basketball team we would be ranked but football hasn’t yet received the respect. Considering our strength of schedule this year I am fine with being 27th. The coaches overcame a lot to get this group to 9-3. With recruiting on the uptick this year proves we can play for the conference championship in the future which will get us in the national playoffs. Let that thought sink in, the National Playoffs in football. As a long suffering Duke football fan of over 50 years am I dreaming? So sorry that Bill Brill, Al and others, including some of my Duke classmates, didn’t get to experience this.

P.S. At this point we would be more likely to be invited into the BIG than FSU.

Not as delicious as I hoped but aggies 26, Duke 27 still tastes good.
