FB: Duke 23, Wake Forest 17

Heckuva last play by Duke (perfect throw by Malik and great route and catch by Moore) and a great win for Duke. Great season for the Blue Devils.
Does anything still remember Midnight Mike or Riley Leonard??
I'm not conversant with all of the transfer rules but I hope one of the football powerhouses, that needs a quarterback, doesn't come after Malik Murphy (a la Riley Leonard). Can he transfer to another school and play right away?

Can you imagine if we ended up ranked higher than Texas A&M?! I didn’t even have the possibility that would happen on my bingo card, or any of my alternate bingo cards.
Yea, not to be bitter, but I'd love to see Texas blow out A&M tonight. College game day was coming from College Station this morning and they had Midnight Mike on the show and, needless to say, there was no mention of how he screwed over Duke last year (although I think everything has turned out for the better with Manny D). Yea, it would be delicious irony if Duke surpassed A&M in the rankings.

Wow!

Build a JoMo statue tomorrow. There are so many guys who exemplify the culture change of the last 3 years, but he is #1.

There was quite a bit of Maalik slander in the chat. Much of it deserved, in fairness. But the guy has no fear. He's now led 4 fourth quarter comebacks in his first year as a starter.

I can't wait to dive into the post-game. I noticed Maalik leaving his position to shout at someone right before the last play. Was he giving instructions to Jordan? Watching live, I was screaming "throw it!" thinking we needed a quick pass to set up the FG. Apparently Wake was thinking the same thing. Either that was an incredible bit of deception, or it was an incredible ad-libbing by Maalik and Jordan.

9 wins with our only losses being to 3 very good teams, 2 of whom we led against in the fourth quarter and the other we could have beaten in OT.
Looking at ESPN's record of the Miami game, it doesn't appear to me that Duke was leading at any time in the 4th Q of that one. They came within 1. They led a bit in the 3rd Q though.

They both indicated it was a total ad-lib.

Wow! Just Wow!!

Congrats to the team for exceeding all expectations. 9-3, OMG!

I gotta be honest about two things.

1. I was out when the game started and recorded it. When the score hit 17-3 I stopped the DVR, did some stuff and came back to finish off watching the loss.

2. On the last drive/play I kept thinking, "Is this a Kansas City Chiefs game with different colored jerseys?" It had that feel of knowing it could happen, but generally doesn't in the real world.

I was thinking it was a mistake to hold onto the ball that long. Maybe I was wrong.
The original play was supposedly a quick 5 yard route to get into better FG range. According to Maalik and Moore, they both saw he was taking too long, so that TD bomb was totally improvised.

With the score tied at 17, the Blue Devils (9-3, 5-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) moved 76 yards in 1:22 after forcing a Wake Forest punt. It appeared that Duke might run out of time in the slow-developing play, but Moore improvised and broke free along the right side, caught the ball at the 10-yard line and spun into the end zone to complete a comeback from 14 points down in the second half.
...

"I just decided to take it down the field," Moore said. "I think that's a testament to our chemistry. … Maalik had the confidence in himself to make that kind of play."

Haven’t seen Manny’s post-game PC yet. Here’s Wake’s HC Dave Clawson’s:

ETA: Manny —

Speaking of....
Remember in Cut's waning days and we were all so jealous of what Clawson had going on down the road? Time takes its toll.

Up next

Duke: Awaits a bowl invitation

Wake Forest: Enters the offseason with a losing record for the third time in five seasons.

I'd say that was his brutally honest view of where college (and more specifically Wake Forest) football is right now. Thanks for sharing.

I thought Malik was giving instructions to Jake Taylor. Jake did end up running a post and pulling the right side deep safety with him to the left, leaving JoMo with a 1-1 matchup with the Wake CB covering him.

Interesting that to me it looked like J.Moore was Murphy's last option... third or fourth option? Started looking right, then down the middle, finally right to J.Moore.

Yeah, based on what I saw, and under the bright light of hindsight, my guess is maybe Jake Taylor could have been option 1 for a quick slant down the middle to pick up 5-10 yards and maybe center the ball for a FG. We had a timeout left. But I don’t know whether Duke’s coaches or players shared any commentary about the last play after the game.

Apparently while setting up the play Malik thought that he had let too much time elapse to throw a 5 yarder to set up a fg attempt. That wasn't true but it led him to “audible” with Moore the go-for-all-the-marbles play. Murphy probably should have stuck with the original play but it all worked out perfectly in the end. All’s well that ends well! 😄

Better than PERFECT. It was AWESOME. Tie game... last play of the regular season... 8 seconds left on the clock... TD at 0:00. 9 win season.

I guess my impression at the time was that, when Murphy looked Moore's way, Jordan noticed and immediately took off down the field. I credit Jordan with the move that made the play possible and Murphy for an absolutely perfect throw. And Jordan's pirouette at the 5 was impressive as well, it eliminated the last defender with a chance at him.

You are correct. We closed to 32-31 with first score of the quarter but that was it.

We didn’t lead against Miami in the 4th quarter. After going up by 11 in the first drive of the second half, we only scored 3 more points. Miami score slight more than that. Like 12 times more.

But yes. We hung with Miami for 2 plus quarters. We even kept it extremely close into the beginning of the 4th, but it flipped from a competitive game to a blow out.
