Duke Women's Soccer 2024

IMO, you get that mindset from having gone through the battles. Only 4 players were even on their last College Cup team and only 2 got minutes. The other 7 starters last night are brand new as they had a mass exodus after last year. Dorrance was not at the helm either. By the way, UNC has had epic choke losses in the NCAAs the previous two seasons to UCLA (surrendering 2 goals in the final 11 minutes and losing in OT when the keeper allowed a howler) and BYU (blowing a 3-0 lead in the final 30 minutes to lose 4-3)

If that was the case our men’s basketball team should almost always win the ACC regular season and make the Final Four because of the programs mindset earned from 1986 to 2004.

We had a bad night at the office against a very good team…it happens

Wake played pretty well in the first half but couldn't find the goal. In the second the CHeats took control as expected. Got a goal on a nice free kick from Thomas and that was enough. Wake looked pretty sloppy and unorganized for the rest of the game.

I feel pretty confident we would have beaten Wake, but that's water under the bridge. Ugh. First title for the CHeats since 2012 (which is coincidentally when the Wainstein report came out and they could no longer put players in fake classes).

Looking forward to next season.

The cream rose to the top for the 22nd time. Would be nice if Duke Men’s Basketball could claim 22 national championship. Not sure how the comparison translates, other than talent level was pretty high for both programs but unc soccer turned theirs into quite a few more national championships.

Not sure you are being serious, but it seems to me that the answer is along the lines of amount of competition: There are hundreds of D-1 schools in men's hoops and virtually all having been playing it for more than 50 years, many for much longer. Women's NCAA sports are relatively recent, and there has been an obvious concentration of talent in relatively few schools and, therefore, championships. Women's soccer at UNC is the extreme case.

Bingo!!!!

Wow do I hate losing to UNC in any sport. We were all set to watch the game, my wife didn't realize I had saved the game for later and texted Katie's Groff's mom that we were fired up to watch the game. The response let us know we weren't going to be happy. Have so enjoyed watching Katie play (and grow up) all these years. There was a time when her husband was playing on our volleyball team and 3 of the families were expecting we all had daughters within a month of each other. And here I thought I couldn't like UNC athletics any less.....

I won’t write too many details here because I don’t want to out myself just yet but I keep reflecting on the year, last friday, these post-season awards and college sports in general and I cannot be bitter. The players play for each other and their families and also for the passionate and supportive community - like this one. There are little girls and old men that wait to say “hi” and exchange a post-game smile. There have been professors who figure out whose parent goes with which player and come up to them to say something about their kid in the classroom and juggling life as an elite athlete and an elite student (including at last Friday’s match). They wanted to win so badly but as @TheTrain stated upthread, a bad night at the office v a very good team. We can dissect what may have gone wrong (I won’t because I know the players) but it wasn’t because they didn’t want it. They did. Every single game they wanted it. I really hope they can keep that going in 2025 and beyond.

Best post of the entire thread. Thanks. If we still had sporks, you'd certainly get quite a few for that post, including one from me.

Of course they wanted it. They wanted it, their coach wanted it, their families wanted it. All that hard work starting at the beginning of this season was leading to the ultimate prize. I’m not sure there is a poster who doesn’t agree with that. Yes, they had a bad day at the office, against a program that has had 22 good days at the office in the college Cup. Whether it be Duke or anyone else, Unc has forced a lot of bad days at the office on a lot of soccer programs. They wanted it too. With history on their side.

They were a wonderful team, they accomplished a lot, and they were simply a joy to watch and to root for this season. They really played the beautiful game beautifully.
