Down Memory Lane

Folks may forget that the halftime score was 53-26. Carolina was actually super competitive in the second half as we only outscored them 29-24.

And I seem to remember Carolina hitting a garbage three at the buzzer to get their final score out of the 40’s.

Well, to be fair, Carolina had all the momentum going into the second half after Marcus Ginyard hit a 3 pointer at the first half buzzer to cut the lead from 30 to 27. :)

The score 82-50 is etched into our brains. However, as you point out, the final score dramatically underestimates how much of a blowout it really was.

If you watch that end of the first half, you’ll see future coach Jon Scheyer clapping his hands in frustration at Duke allowing that shot by Ginyard.

To all ya'll wishing for another 82-50 beat down, I say "NONSENSE! Not gonna happen!"

I think you are all short-sighted buffoons! Buffoons, I say! There is actually a non-zero chance this year in Cameron may end up as 95-5

Oh ye of little faith! 😜
I would be very very happy with a 1-pt win over the Heels. 🤷‍♂️

I once heard a story that Wilt Chamberlain often bumped into fans who would say, "I was in the Garden the night you scored 100 points!"

He would always smile and nod rather than saying, "Well, I'm not sure what you were doing there -- I was in Hershey, Pa."

Or so the story goes.
I saw Wilt play in the Hershey Farm Show Arena, unfortunately it was when Wilt was with the Globetrotters rather than the Warriors. 😡😎

My favorite part of that game was the fact that Game Day was set up outside of Cameron at halftime. They asked Bobby Knight if Carolina could get back in the game, and he just laughed. "No chance."

(Or something like that, beers may have been involved).
Before the game, I remember the various members of the Game Day crewing making their predictions. Hubert Davis picked the Heels. Bilas retorted something to the effect that he must be trying to get the alumnus of the year award because this was going to be a beatdown. And Knight said that Hubert was wearing black because it was going to be a funeral.

There is no tape or film of my first Duke-UNC game. It was the game eons ago with the fight between Art Heyman and Larry Brown. The film -- at least the exciting parts -- were confiscated by the ACC office and have never been released. But Duke won.
You can see some of the exciting parts you mention on that particular episode of “The Tournament” though.
