Dan Hurley prepares for and runs a practice

This guy, currently the face of college basketball, is some piece of work. Love him? Hate him? Whatever, the dude is undeniable...it almost seems like a satire of a possessed college basketball coach.

I feel like that could have been Coach K 30 years ago.
I have been wondering lately why Hurley gets away with stuff that K would have been excoriated over. I can only think that he's always been very friendly with the media, which K certainly was not.

Thanks for posting the video, but this belongs in the General MBB Preseason Discussion thread. The Connecticut board posts Duke threads because they have that obsession, and not the other way around.

I think it's fair to compare Dan Hurley 2024-2025 to Coach K 1992-1993, when the latter still had a mostly positive relationship with the national media. To these outsider's eyes, both coaches are/were determined to maintain a high level of intensity year-round, when the prevailing tendency is to be somewhat relaxed and celebratory. Their approaches are very different, though; Coach K has a philosophical polish that comes with being an author/lecture circuit type, and some people find that off-putting. Coach Hurley wears his emotions on his sleeve, sometimes to his detriment, and there are people who like that.

Not drawing any comparisons, but the phrase "satire of a possessed college basketball coach" reminded me of this SNL skit:

I get that Coach K is not everyone’s cup of tea, but most people that I interact with that are not exactly fans respect his accomplishments and his methods for building success.

And then there are those folks who just hate the guy.

I’m not a UConn fan (I grew up a Duke fan in CT in the 80s/90s), but I’ve always respected Dan Hurley and now have high regard for what he has accomplished at Connecticut.

And with that, I’ve probably hit my quota for Dan Hurley related posts for the year.

Yeah, you can hear the same types of messages that Coach K communicated to our guys (energy, effort, preparation, next play), it just sounds like Hurley does so in a more negative, angry, even abusive manner at times. That prep room with the coaches seemed tense, not loose at all, and Hurley just seemed mean at times. You can be demanding without being an a-hole. I just don't feel the 'love' that a couple of guys mentioned in the video ("when he makes us run stairs, it's coming from a place of love"), but perhaps the video edit has a lot more to do with that than anything else. Otherwise, I agree that it feels more like a satire, and also agree with chrishoke that he gives off major Bob Knight energy. Can't argue with the results, though...

Good Lord is that guy intense. It's honestly almost hard to stomach, for me. Not because I don't respect it, just because being that relentlessly aggressive is exhausting to watch even in a 10-minute snip, let alone perpetually. His views on burnout just sort of put an exclamation point on his attitude. He's for real, I'm just not sure I'm personally wired to respond to that sort of personality. As a fan or as a player.

The main thing is that for a coach to be successful he must have the respect of his team. There are all kinds of styles that can work. Hurley's style works for some and not for others.

I was an offensive guard and linebacker in high school. My football coach seldom raised his voice, but when he did you remembered. I came to prefer that coaching style. Our school was the smallest in the conference and won the championship three years running.

I wonder how different Bobby is in practice, considering his in game persona is pretty intense and demonstrative.

Danny had to put up with his big brother always outperforming him, and now he's making up for it.

Ah yes, another successful graduate of the Patches O’Houlihan School of Coaching

  • He has good penmanship
  • On the border of being flagged by FBI profiler
  • Ariana Grande also has to speak in lower tone away from the stage to save her voice — it’s not being fake at all for the cameras ;) — Coach K had to finally resort to a soft “yo” to ge the team’s attention
  • I appreciate and totally respect what Young Daniel has done at UCONN — I don’t believe it’s a lifelong revenge plot for losing to his older brother in the NCAA Tournament
  • UCONN’s modern resume is as good as Duke’s some could easily argue it’s better — Dan has put the cherry on top
  • This video does feel very Sheila's Kelly satire — love the reference video above — though Danny definitely knows his media audience and fan base — good on him — look how he genius-handled the Lakers speculation to land a mega contract
  • UCONN vs DUKE is going to turn into one of the greatest out of league rivalries in basketball history (already there with the previous ncaa tourney battles) — would like to see the in season game happen every year — we got some scores to settle

And how much the two of them are like Bobby Hurley Sr.
