Aussie Open 2025

Missed the match, but read that mid way thru the 3rd - maybe it was after the second set - she had played more games in a major since like 1968 than all but 4 players in history - all who lost in the finals. Congrats to her. Sounded like a gutty performance. 5 of 7 matches she played/won in the tournament were 3 setters.

I watched the match. Sabalenka seemed tight (perhaps she always looks that way) and Madison played (mentally) loose in the last set. Madison had a couple of clutch saves in the last set, on her serve, and only broke in the last game. Sabalenka committed felonious harm to her racket after the match; pardons forthcoming.

Point of the match for me was in the 3rd set when Keys came to the net, Sabalenka hit a tremendous shot trying to get over Keys, and Madison jumped and hit a ridiculous backhand that landed with an acute angle at the net (no chance for return). Keys had a big smile after that one. Couldn't find it on youtube. Keys beat the 10th, 2nd, and 1st ranked players in the world on the way to this win; earned it!

I thank Madison for not being a screamer. Sabalenka, not so much.

Madison Keys wins her first Slam in a slugfest over Sabalenka, 7-5 in 3rd! Go Madison!!! Long time coming. And to take out Swaitek and Sabalenka to do it is unreal.
Keys has strong groundstrokes with great shotmaking ability. She played steady and consistent with timely explosiveness against both Swiatek and Sabalenka. I wanted Swiatek to win, but I like Keys as well.

I absolutely did not want Sabalenka to win. I’m not really a fan of her stiff, pure power-based game nor of her excessive shrieking, which is highly-annoying.

Thank you, Madison! 🙏

The men’s final, between Jannik Sinner and Alexander Zverev, is likely going to be an epic match. They are both extremely talented and are playing at the top of their game. I cannot WAIT for this match!

Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner are my co-favorite players followed by Zverev. I want Sinner to win — after all, I am Italian — but I would be perfectly content with Zverev. May the best man win. 🎾

Oh. I thought it was because: after all you are a Sinner.

Never mind.

My grandparents on my mother’s side immigrated from Sicily to Cleveland in the early 1930’s and then moved to Burbank, CA. My grandmother’s maiden name was Graziano. My grandfather’s was Panarisi. Somehow I ended up being named run-of-the-mill Steven. 🤷‍♂️

Stefano would have been more interesting.
My forebears on both sides moved from the Lancaster, Reading, Hershey area of Pennsylvania to the Greensboro area many moons ago.

As far as I can tell my ancestry is steeped in chocolate. 🍫
