2025 Men's Basketball Recruiting

I think such an implication is "obvious" only to someone who either (a) is inclined to cast aspersions upon the character of Jai Lucas by suggesting that he would encourage the Boozer twins to renege on their commitment to Duke; or (b) is desperate to believe that the University of Miami basketball program is, or is poised to become with the new coaching staff, so ascendant as a magnet for recruits that it can pry highly rated prospects from their previous commitments to Duke. In other words, a report framed in those terms might be perceived as you suggest by Hurricane fans and resonate similarly with others who are the target audience of the Miami Herald; but I believe that people who are familiar with Jai Lucas, and with his relationship to the other Duke coaches, and with the comparative appeal of the Duke and Miami programs are less likely to draw such a negative implication.
This rings true: everything about the relationship between Duke, Scheyer, and Lucas speaks to respect and loyalty and poaching would be greatly out of character. My tendency towards paranoia has been firmly squelched by all of these comments--much appreciated!

Moran would seemingly have connections in Miami, so he would be a valuable addition to the staff for recruiting purposes alone...

...Columbus is a really good program in basketball (Jase Richardson played there before heading to Michigan State this year) and is a feeder program for football as well. Mario Cristobal and Alex Rodriguez are two of the _many_ Columbus High alums that have ties to The U, and it would make sense for any coach to consider strengthening that link.

To piggyback onto these comments, Andrew Moran wasn't winning all those state championships with a 2-man team. The Boozer twins have teammates -- currently underclassmen -- and maybe Miami is trying to do what they can to attract those players in the next recruiting cycle.

Columbus High participated in the Hoophall Classic in January, and On3 listed some of the high school stars on their roster.

Columbus:
On3 Composite Ranking
: No. 1

Five-Star Plus+ 2025 PF Cam Boozer (Duke)
4-Star 2025 PG Cayden Boozer (Duke)
4-Star 2026 SF Caleb Gaskins
4-Star 2026 SF Jaxon Richardson
3-Star 2026 PF Keeper Jackson
3-Star 2025 G Cello Jackson

If Miami hopes a player will follow Andrew Moran to college, that player is most likely Caleb Gaskins, who is 2026's top recruit in the state of Florida, and #11 overall, according to On3. Fellow 4-star forward Jaxon Richardson is #21 overall, but might be leaning toward Sparty like his older brother Jase and their father Jason.

Finally, to those of you who are bothered by this potential story about Jai Lucas and Andrew Moran, ask yourselves: are you bothered that the Boozer twins will get poached because of this news, or are you just bothered because other people might think that?

Well, as the one who started this ill-fated discussion, I will admit with some embarrassment that I (over)reacted to reading these reports with my usual pessimistic paranoia ("Maliq/Tyrese are injured? OMG, it's over" or "the weak ACC dooms us when we face SEC-hardened competitors"). So, posting to this island of sanity helps me get grounded again.

I love this year's team--the most enjoyable for me in many years--but I would still love to be in the Natty discussion next season, and the Boozers are central to that. I am reassured that we will be in that conversation.

Just remember that paranoia is se
Lf inflicted injury until it happens.

Nate Ament taking his last official visit, at Arkansas, this weekend.

Arkansas is hosting #25 Mississippi State in the regular season finale. The Hogs are squarely on the bubble and a win over the Bulldogs would give them some much needed breathing room from bid stealers. Should be a good atmosphere.

247 currently has Calipari's 2025 class rated #4 nationally (commits from the the #5, 12, and 107 prospects). Not sure if an Ament commit would be enough to dethrone Duke at #1, but I expect it would be close.

On a different note, the Naismith Award released their high school All American teams today and all four men's 2025 commits are on it in some form or fashion. Cam Boozer is first team, Nik Khamenia is third, and Cayden Boozer and Shelton Henderson are honorable mention. Ament is first team, and 2026 offer Jordan Smith is third team. Duke women's commit Emilee Skinner is third team on the girls' side.

More on Shelton Henderson, courtesy of the big Houston newspaper, appropriately named the Chronicle (or, since they’re hip, the Chron):

For those into spoiler alerts, here’s the final paragraph. In discussing comparable players:

“When you look at Justise Winslow, just the competitive nastiness of who you have to be to be on that court at Duke, it is unique and special," Zertuche said. "Only certain people can step on that court to be that type of player. Henderson has that DNA."

Thanks for sharing! My favorite quote: “He’s better than Justise Winslow was as a high schooler.” We know how it turned out for that guy at Duke!

Looking forward to having Shelton next year. Though I’m sure people will think it’s Sheldon. Or Shelden.

That article has a lot of over the top comparisons, not just Justise: Lebron, Dwyane Wade, James Harden, Jrue Holiday, Mark Aguirre(?), Marcus Smart, Kidd-Gilchrist . . .

Sounds like he's a really good player and I'm sure Duke will help him develop quickly.
