2024 Olympics - Women's Basketball - Gold!

JasonEvans

Host, The Duke Basketball Roundup
In an effort to keep conversations a bit more focused, the DBR Mods have decided to segregate all Olympic conversations into three threads.

1- Men's Basketball - After all, we are a basketball community and there are basketball Dukies in this event in Tatum, Maluach, and (kinda) Deng. This will include both the 5x5 and 3x3 tournaments.

2- Women's Basketball - See above but sub the names Grey and Lawson.

3- General Olympic stuff - This will be for all the other events and competitions happening around the games.

We ask that you endeavor to put posts in the right place.

Thanks,

-DBR Moderation team

12 teams compete in women's basketball 5x5, grouped as follows:

Group A

🇨🇳 China
🇵🇷 Puerto Rico
🇷🇸 Serbia
🇪🇸 Spain

Group B

🇦🇺 Australia
🇨🇦 Canada
🇫🇷 France
🇳🇬 Nigeria

Group C

🇧🇪 Belgium
🇩🇪 Germany
🇯🇵 Japan
🇺🇸 United States

As I pointed out in the Olympic thread for men's basketball, the flags are actually smilies built into the DBR board. Just search by country.

Just so people can plan out their viewing, the first game for the USWNT at the Olympics is 3pm Monday against Japan. I would not expect that to be much of a contest.

Can't find the link right now, but Dawn Staley in an interview yesterday basically said "Oops" when asked about Clark's omission. To her credit, she said if they knew now what they knew then, they couldn't have passed on her. (Of course they should have had better foresight, though.)

Taurasi starting is a joke. I’m sure Reeve is nodding to her experience, but she’s just not that good any more. We played them Japan frustratingly even right up to the part where Kelsey Plum took over the shooting guard spot. She made an immediate impact on the defensive end and we got a lead.

OMG. Griner with a one-handed rebound above the world. The rebounding margin in this game is going to be insane.

It wasn't much of a contest in the end, but I have to say, Japan impressed me with their tenacity. When you're facing a team that has a player who can literally hold the ball straight above her head with one hand and there's absolutely nothing anyone on your team can do about it, it's pretty impressive that you keep getting your hands into the dribble, poke away passes, and get surprisingly physical. They held it closer for longer than they should have.

And credit to Cheryl Reeve, who not only found a way to play more than 10 players in a 40-minute game, she found a way for all of them to score. Every single one. Steve Kerr, are you taking notes?

Did anybody catch the first game of the women's 3x3? The U.S. lost to Germany, 17-13, despite leading 5-0 at the start. Now I will grant you that a lineup of Dearica Hamby, Rhyne Howard, Hailey Van Lith, and Cierra Burdick just isn't as good as the lineup of Stefanie Dolson, Alisha Gray, Kelsea Plum and Jackie Young that we had back in Tokyo. But I have to say, watching that game, Lawson definitely gets some credit for that gold medal last time around. That 2020 team made lightning transitions from offense to defense and back again. We often caught other teams unprepared for that transition, and it led to open looks for us, and shot clock violations for the opposition. The current Olympic group just didn't have the same level of intensity and urgency about them yesterday, and that shoe was on the wrong foot.

I'll be interested to see what we can do on the score today at 3:30, playing a much less intimidating team in Azerbaijan.

Who is coaching this year?

Still interested? (not a dig at you) They lost and will probably not make it out of the pool round. Interesting that teams get a point in the standings just for showing up. Is that the ultimate in participation trophies?

Edit: I don't understand the set-up. From what I can tell there is only 1 pool, Pool A. That's not a pool. So is this just about seeding for a knock-out round? Kinda nonsensical, they can't play all 7 other teams in time.

Remember that the 3x3 would be much different looking, and likely way more successful, had they still had Cameron Brink who had to drop out after her injury last month. The current roster has only been together for 2 weeks.
That's a good point. I still think it illustrates what a good coach Lawson is, though. The transition from offense to defense is much more immediate in 3x3, and to me, that's a coaching issue. The performance of the 2020 team was stellar in this regard.

I was mostly trying to comment on what a good coach Duke has.
