2024 Men's Basketball Recruiting

DBR Dudes, I know that y'all mean well and are posting with the "best" information you have at the moment.

So I think it's only fair and kind to tell you that the proverbial train has already left the station, i.e., I'm the 5 y/o's agent for NIL [he won't release his name without NIL guarantees] and at this point [1] He won't make a biding commitment until the very last moment [to be determined by coaches who want him very, very badly]; and [2] He wants MUCHO OREOs! That's his coin of the realm. He has been very clear with me: The "universities" that show him love and belief NOW, rather than waiting to see how he does in the years to come, have a fighting chance...as he says, "Who the hell knows what will happen down the road?", and sorry for the salty language, but that's how he talks and he has a point, right? So, bring on the Oreos with no expectation in return, if you want to stay in the game.

You are likely not interested in this Inside Baseball stuff, but if you think that he is playing hardball with prospective basketball schools, you would not want to hear how aggressive he has been with me, as someone who was competing to be his NIL agent. Not pretty. One PG-rated example: He insists that his prospective "schools" begin now to provide 24/7 AI-enhanced academic support [with grade guarantees], so that he can continue to play the game that he loves. He also insisted that I agree to play a binding mediator role between him and his parents regarding any disputes that may arise, keeping in mind at all times my desire to continue as his NIL agent. I'm not totally sure that this is appropriate, but I wrestled with my conscience and won, and it sealed the deal. Not that you are crying for me, Argentina, but I have already, just 11 days into our arrangement, more than earned my paltry keep. [Given his current cash situation, I have had to accept my compensation in the form of Oreos.]

So, if and only if, you are wiling to put MUCHO Oreos on his table, without guarantees, and provide 24/7 AI-enhanced academic support [with grade guarantees], contact me at muchooreos@gmail.com. In case you're wondering, it seems that this is the way things are going.

A good agent would convince his client that if he waits until just before the deadline, he'll get paid in double stuffs.

Nothing has been decided in the recruitment of Julius Halaifonua, but time is of the essence here -- UNC is running out of time to make something happen, while Georgetown has time on its side.

Casual Hoya has slightly more information, but mostly offers a collection of social media posts and videos.

It's possible that he stops by Chapel Hill, but it would be a short visit, the kind you might measure in hours rather than days. Here's why.

August 1-3: visit to Georgetown
August 4-5: visit to UNC?
August 6-20: recruiting dead period (link)
August 19: UNC first day of classes
August 23: UNC late registration deadline (PDF link)
August 28: Georgetown first day of classes
September 6: Georgetown late registration deadline (link)

You hope this is a clear-cut situation in which Halaifonua commits to Georgetown during his visit, but even if it isn't, UNC would have to move mountains to get him to enroll in time. And honestly, that would be true for anyone they tried to add now.

At the risk of quoting The Princess Bride, the dead period is only mostly dead, which means it's slightly alive. In-person meetings are not allowed, but athletes and coaches can still make contact via phone, email, or social media. Hard to say if Hubert Davis can accomplish that with a New Zealander who may or may not get a chance to visit Chapel Hill, but it is possible for someone else (domestic) who might still be in UNC's plans.

As of now, UNC has two scholarships available, while Georgetown has three scholarships available. If you're into predictions, the HoyaTalk board at Hoya Saxa says that Trilly Donovan and On3's Jamie Shaw and Joe Tipton are pointing to Georgetown.
You’re suggesting that a player must enroll on time at the University of No Classes?

This will probably be old news to most, but apparently on the latest Brotherhood podcast, Cooper talks about how he was turned off by 'negative recruiting' that was done by UConn.

Apparently it is not an uncommon practice for other schools to dis Duke as a way to get recruits to go to their school, instead. Happily, some people see through that and are actually offended by it.

So, although I thought I would never say this if I lived to be a million..... thanks, UConn. 😲🤨🤣

He talked about not liking negative recruiting but I believe he did not directly tie uconn to it. It is fairly logical to draw that conclusion given that UConn was Duke’s primary competition, but he did not directly say that. As people always say on the politics thread, it is important to be careful when quoting others.

Point well taken. It came down to UConn vs Duke because he had taken Kansas off his list. It is possible he was talking about Kansas, for all we know.

I wasn't planning on bringing this up, but since others have, let's go to the video and try to write out what was actually said (starting around the 5:35 mark):

Caleb Foster: "Me and you have talked about how the recruiting process went for both of us, as far as when we're going and talking to other schools, it's kind of like, 'Oh, Duke doesn't have this, this is why you shouldn't go, this is why you shouldn't go to Duke...' I know that kind of led to the decision like, everybody recruiting against Duke. It's like, bro, what do you have to offer? Why are you worried about Duke? You're your own school."

Cooper Flagg: "Exactly. It's something that I looked at... it was negative recruiting. It just was something that I didn't like going through that process is when other schools would try to do that, and I think most players out there do not like when coaches would do that."

Caleb Foster: "Made me like, okay, so then I should go to Duke. That's the common denominator. Everybody's like, 'Oh Duke doesn't have this, this what we got better than Duke'... But yeah, we'll leave that alone."

For some reason, the DBR front page jumped all over this topic and wrote a fairly irresponsible stream-of-consciousness piece attributing the negative recruiting to Dan Hurley and Connecticut, going into inferiority complexes and mental health concerns.

I know the constant push for new content means that not every column is a winner, but this one was pretty bad, and because DBR gets its front page headlines picked up by Google News, it went out there. Huskies fan forum The Boneyard has a whole thread called Duke fans are delusional because of this article, which is fine, because the article certainly merits criticism. Some of the posters also looked at the video and noted that Flagg makes, at most, a very general statement about negative recruiting as something he experienced.

I don't take it personally because I'm not wired that way, but the thread does tap into that fanbase's unease and continued obsession with Duke, despite recent experiences in the tournament that should make them blissfully happy. Internet or no Internet, I remember being pretty easygoing in the summer of 1992, still fresh off watching back-to-back titles.

Very well said. There have been several times where the front page has made pretty egregious errors. As you noted, they are perceived by many as the voice of the Duke community. Yet multiple times they have shown pretty bad judgement. In this case, it is too late, but I recall a few times where there was a lot of outrage on the boards and someone said they would communicate with the author of the article, yet nothing was done.

Like it or not, in 2024, they are journalists. They need to hold themselves to the highest journalistic standards. I appreciate all they do, and we all make mistakes (I make plenty of them), but they really need to be a lot more careful. It is embarrassing for Duke fans and detrimental to Duke University and Duke athletics. I'm sure some think I am being sensationalistic, but that is the way the game is played these days.

The article basically accuses UConn and Hurley of having Duke Derangement Syndrome (to paraphrase a term I really hate), but by incorrectly posting this article, I think it actually makes it look like Duke has UConn Derangement Syndrome. Which isn't a good look.

I agree that it was not a good look for the person who controls the Main Page and writes the vast, vast majority of the articles there. Cooper quite clearly made no direct comment about UConn...

That said, it is sorta well known among folks who know about this stuff that there was some negative recruiting that happened last year in regards to UConn and Duke. It is a bit of an open secret. No one who is a first-person source is going to talk openly about this stuff, but let me just say that UConn's hands are not exactly clean.

I don't know if this puts me in the minority around here, but I like Danny Hurley. Great personal story. Helluva coach. That offense is a thing of beauty. Yeah, he can be a bit of an a** sometimes but that's often true of the great ones.
I like Dan Hurley too. He has a ton of passion and cares deeply about his players. I think he is an offensive genius and he gets his kids to play hard all the time. Folks who are haters are probably the same folks who disliked Coach K for winning too much.
