2024-25 MBB Rankings

I don't really care, but I find it interesting Gonzaga leapt us in the rankings. Sure, they smacked Baylor but we beat Arizona St. by WAY more than them.

Got no problem with Auburn going to the top 5, though.
Gonzaga didn't leap Duke. In week 1, Gonzaga was 6, Duke was 7.

Duke is now 6 after moving ahead of Houston (was 4, now 8) and Iowa State (was 5, now 7) but getting leaped by Auburn (was 10, now 5). Duke has more total points in Week 2 than in Week 1 (1222 vs 1154).

Duke is up to #4 in the AP Poll that was just released today. Given the schedule ahead, there's a decent chance that Duke takes over #1 at some point this season. The last time Duke was #1 in the AP Poll was November 29, 2021.

The three teams I have a personal, family or regional interest in (Duke, UC, SDSU) are all ranked in the top 25 this week. I skimmed the rest of the list and didn’t see UNC. I haven’t paid much attention to them this year, so maybe I just missed them in my quick glance.

Duke is currently behind Tennessee, Auburn, and Iowa St. (and barely ahead of Kentucky; I'd flip us with the Cats on my personal ballot but no one asked). Presumably Duke would need one or more losses from each of those teams to move up. Looking at tough games for them in the near future:

Tennessee: at Illinois on Saturday, vs. Arkansas on 1/4, at Florida on 1/7
Auburn: vs. Purdue on 12/21, vs. Missouri on 1/4, at Texas on 1/7
Iowa St: at Iowa on Thursday, vs. Baylor on 1/4

Some tough ones but I expect all three will be favored in those games. Schedules will get harder as they move into the heart of conference play, but Duke probably has to avoid a loss through at least mid-late January to have a shot a #1. Of course, the only currently ranked team remaining on Duke's schedule is Clemson on 2/8 (woof).

I'd be ok at #4 all season long, to be honest. But I wanna be in the top 4 when the NCAA pairings are announced. One seed, baybee. Aim for that.
The esteemed Joe Lunardi updated his projections. We are a 2-seed, Clemson a 4 and Cheats/Pitt safely in.

No other ACC team on the horizon, and 4 of 18 qualifying is poor. I doubt this improves.

I've watched them play. It is strange. They have real talent, but no drive to win. Their defense absolutely sucks. Is this a coaching thing? Or is Davis not doing his job as team captain?

Almost all of UNC's talent is on the perimeter. The inside game is very weak. And RJ Davis has been shooting quite poorly thus far.

Duke slides from 4 to 5 in the latest AP poll, trading places with Kentucky (which, fair enough) by the slimmest of margins. Kentucky has 1325 points in this week's poll, Duke has 1324.

I'm not sure what the voters saw last week that changed anyone's mind (the Cats beat Louisville by 8). The individual voter data isn't up, so I'm not sure yet who we should be mad about for this injustice.

Someone only watched the first 18 minutes of the Incarnate Word game
