I tried a new tactic this contest, I voted for all the movies hoping that no one notices.
No love for Spies in Disguise? I bet it will beat Cats.

Reminder that the poll closes at 230pm on Wednesday (730pm Tuesday for me as I see Joker then).
We are currently at 37 voters. Star Wars 9 (100%) and Frozen 2 (97.3%) are basically unanimous picks. Jumani is close with 91% of the votes. Joker, which may be getting a recency bonus because it opens next week and there has been a lot of chatter about the movie, is next at 62%. After that, we get to Maleficent 2 at 40% and then Terminator (21%), Birds of Prey (16%), and Field (16%). Every single option in the poll has at least 2 votes, which (I think) has never happened before.
I don't think I have ever been this torn and undecided. Yes, there are 3 obvious picks but I really can make a strong case for at least 5 or 6 others, including a couple films that have only gotten 2 votes. Knives Out was supposedly the best and most crowd-pleasing film at TIFF (two friends who attended TIFF told me that) and I am hearing that Beautiful Day will be a strong Oscar contender and could have really long legs as a result.

"Spies in Disguise" over "Guys in Disguise?"

The Irishman, which will get a brief theatrical release before going to Netflix, had its debut last night at the New York Film Festival. This is a heady statement, but it is getting arguably the best reviews of Martin Scorsese's career. Critics seem to be arguing whether it is his best film since Goodfellas or his best film including Goodfellas. The deaging technology for Pacino, DeNiro, and Pesci that some felt looked awkward in trailers supposedly is not a problem at all for folks actually sitting through this 3 1/2 hour mob epic.
Following its Friday night premiere at the New York Film Festival, The Irishman stands at 100 percent “Fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics praising the three-and-a-half-hour film as a yet another mob drama masterpiece by the Goodfellas, Casino and The Departed director.
The film inspired by real-life events stars De Niro as World-War-II-veteran-turned-mob-hitman Frank Sheeran, Pesci as Russell Bufalino, and Al Pacino as Jimmy Hoffa.

Vote is in.
Three are certain locks - Star Wars, Frozen and Jumanji. 100%.
Then picked Joker. Then picked Field. To all of you who picked the Field, or Joker, sorry that I just jinxed you.
Did this because movies that finish in the top 5 are all either: Action Movies/Comic Book Adaption Movies/Rom-Com Movies/Animated or Live Action Kid Movies/Movies that those in their 20-40s go to see more than once (ie buzz movies like Get Out) / Sci-Fi / It (only horror movie that really worked, and primarily because so many people 20-40 went to see it.
Really wanted to pick Zombieland or Knives Out, but think the crowd that loves Zombie comedy/action movies is limited, and that Knives Out just won't get enough of the 20-40 crowd (though it will get the 50 and over crowd).
Can't believe so many people are giving Joker their love and none to Wrinkles.
Orrrr...maybe that's the game plan for you field voters!
Q "Why do you like Duke, you didn't even go there." A "Because my art school didn't have a basketball team."
My theory on why almost 70% of you are going to lose...
Actually, I'm amazed that so many voted for Joker. I get it, being superhero related, but this isn't that kind of movie. From everything that I've read, it is a dark and violent film, without a happy ending. In fact, the violence is conjuring up so much worry that movie theaters are staffing security during showings, with memories of Aurora on people's minds. (They won't be showing it at that particular theater at all.)
It is R rated. That in of itself would give me pause on voting for it. As far as I know, the only R rated movie that made one of our top fives was The Hangover, and that got in because it was hilarious. Parents are more likely to let Jimmy go see a funny movie with lots of F Bombs dropped than they are let them go see a violent movie in today's climate of mass school shootings.
The darkness of the movie will prevent return visits. For any movie to make our top 5, people seeing it more than once is a must. When a reviewer is "Giddy that I never have to think about that movie again", that doesn't put much confidence in second screenings.
So...no kids, very few returnees, and the overall pall of worry and protest in my mind equal a likely good movie is not going to make nearly enough bank to be a top five contender.
I of course may be totally wrong, but it looks to me that Ymo and myself are going to be the only winners in this thread.

Deadpool & Dead Pool 2. It, American Sniper. They were all huge grosses. I'm probably missing a few others and I have no idea if they were within the dates of a contest.
I don't disagree with your assessment about the Joker...but Suicide Squad topped $325 million and that was pretty dark (and stupid). In the end, the lack of a movie I thought would do better is the reason I voted for it.
Thanks for the reminders on that. Of course DPs were also way funny, and American Sniper had patriotic backings.
I never got that SS was dark at all. (It sure as hell was stupid, lol.) Also, Suicide Squad was carried by Margot Robbie, which is the biggest reason that I also voted for Birds Of Prey. Never bet against a sexy chick with a baseball bat.
I do expect a really big opening for Joker, I will simply be surprised if it has legs to carry it.
I've got no doubt that everyone who did vote for it will be feeling good Monday morning.

For the record, I went for the 3 obvious ones plus Joker plus Harley Quinn. It makes me boring and obvious but there is a reason the obvious picks are... well... obvious. It is because they make the most sense.
I came this close to going with Knives Out, which I think will be fabulous and a huge hit among older audiences, but there just is not much history of whodoneit mysteries making $200+ million (and I think both Joker and Harley will get to $200 mil).
If we had some trailers and marketing on Dr. Doolittle that looked good, I might have been tempted, but the lack of buzz really gives me pause and I am not a fan of a mid-January release. Put that film out Christmas week with a decent "look, Iron Man talking to animals!!" trailer and I would have been all over it. Oh well.
There is a non-zero chance that Neighborhood opens with something like $40 million and then stays in the top 5 until February and earns over $200 mil with super long legs. I'm not saying it is likely, but I really though about it.
When it came down to it, I had a fairly easy time writing off most of the others as being aging franchises or simply not looking like they have the quality to get to $200 mil.
-Jason "well, seeing as I have never done better than 4-for-5, I am sure my guesses are wrong anyway... oh well" Evans

It would be unprecedented for a film to earn $90 mil in its opening weekend and not make $200+ mil in total boxoffice. Fifty Shades of Grey holds the record for highest opening without reaching $200 mil in boxoffice when it earned $85.1 mil in Feb of 2015 and went on to only make $166 mil in total boxoffice. Every film to earn more than $85.1 mil has earned $200+ mil.
-Jason "At this point, most experts expect Joker to make around $90 mil (HSX has the opening weekend pegged at $90.1 mil) opening weekend" Evans

A Birds of Prey trailer just dropped... ummm... I may have made the wrong bet with my 5th vote.
