WNBA: The 2024 Regular Season and Playoffs

I didn't see the bad call so I found it and took a look. How can that play be reviewed and the ball not go to the Lynx on the blatent travel that happened before weak foul call? Wow, what a huge mistake.

Note, I didn't have a dog in this fight (thus the reason I didn't watch the game, or any game after CC games ended).
Yeah, I count about 5 steps, but I haven't seen it in slo-mo so I might be off. Still undeniable. The Lynx challenged the foul, but can't challenge the travel? Too late now regardless.

The foul didn't need to be called and a review like that (close call could go either way) is almost always going to be 'confirmed'. But when that gets reviewed and see the obvious walk (which you can't call), you rescind the foul. I know that's not technically right but sometimes you need to do the wrong thing to do the right thing.

And how's this for the Caitlin Effect?

So it sounds like there will be one more season before a new contract is drawn up. If the Caitlin effect is merely Caitlin and the games she plays in, it may backfire. They'll get more money, but they may think they should get way more money.

It hasn't been only Caitlin games, even this season. She's been the most popular player, of course, but attendance and viewership up all across the league, by huge factors. Attendance across the league was up nearly 50% year-over-year, and has nearly doubled over 2022 figures. Viewership is up 170% across the league, and while the Fever lead the way, every team's viewership has increased substantially, and the seven highest-viewership games of all time have been in this past season, with only half of them involving Clark. Social media engagement has quadrupled. Merchandise sales are up 300%, and that's not all Caitlin merch, either.

Meanwhile, the league's media revenue at least quadrupled and it likely to get to more than 5x. Why shouldn't the players negotiate changes to take advantage of that immediately?

I mean, they would have opted out even if Clark was still in college this season as they opted out in the past CBAs. This is the first time the players are in a clear position of strength heading into the negotiation, in part due to a change in team ownership makeups since the last negotiation. The last negotiation was conducted in a period of stability after the two preceding negotiations happened during times where there was genuine concern about the sustainability of the league.

IDK, because it will grow even more and they might being shooting their shot too early? Of course deals are usually structured to be a % of revenue.

Best of luck to the ladies.

The Indiana Fever fired Christie Sides. Have to admit that this surprised me. TBH, early in the season I questioned her a lot (team started 3-10). As the season went on and the team got better and better, I thought that she was doing a good job. That slow start had a lot to do withe their schedule. They were playing a lot games early against a lot of really good teams (I think the WNBA was using Clark's popularity to seed the league with fans for the season).

Yeah I have the same feelings towards it. I think she did more than fine later on in the season and earned a chance to see what the team could do in year 2 of CC.

Jeez, the WNBA gets some fans and they think they're the NFL. There are 12 teams and 6 coaches have been fired. SMH. The Fever hadn't been to the playoffs since 2016 and this was only Sides' 2nd year. I bet she gets 1 of those other 5 spots, and I hope Caitlin isn't in a Daniel Jones situation.

Indiana started the 2024 season with a 1-8 in record in May, going up against what ESPN Analytics deemed the toughest schedule in the WNBA prior to the Olympic break. The Fever eventually figured out an identity surrounding their new franchise piece in Clark and from June 1 to Sept. 10 boasted the third-best record in the league at 18-9. Their offensive rating (109.6 points per 100 possessions) was best in the league after the Olympic break.

Interesting article.

When news broke on Monday that the Connecticut Sun had parted ways with coach Stephanie White after two seasons, it became clear that something was afoot in the WNBA.

In a little over a month, seven teams – the Sun, Los Angeles Sparks, Indiana Fever, Chicago Sky, Atlanta Dream, Dallas Wings and Washington Mystics – have fired or “parted ways” with their coaches. Four teams (the Mystics, Fever, Dream, and the Las Vegas Aces) also parted ways with their GMs over the same period.
