Tony Bennett retires

IC poster speculating they might go after TJ Power after Case Tyson's shaky performance at the 4 against Memphis. But can TJ cover Cooper?
Even with the portal technically open, I wonder if there are any academic issues (remember those?) that would prevent a transfer at this point in the semester. Maybe a transfer now with an eye towards playing in the spring?

Also, I wonder if any NIL deals independently tie the current Cavs to UVA for the season, notwithstanding their eligibility to transfer under NCAA rules.

So what are we assuming is the reasoning as of this moment? Can’t seem to get a consensus, but generally hearing either a family health issue and/or upcoming scandal?
Are you hearing these explanations because people without inside information are repeating them or do you have links. The only confirmed things I have seen or heard is that it is not a health issue. Tony Bennett himself also referred to calling Jay Wright which suggests it is a basketball environment issue. Neither of these comments invoke anything remotely like a scandal.

As was mentioned above it is probably best to wait until the press conference to hear the true reason.

Man this sucks. Virginia is a top notch ACC program, and Bennett is a tremendous coach. I hate to see this. I don’t know what’s going on, but it is bad for ACC and bad for Duke indirectly. Hope he recovers from whatever made him do this, and returns to college ball.

KK is now at the very top of the ACC HC establishment...ponder that. He's outlasted what...4 NCAA championship coaches? It's too bad he didn't let a PG pass until the ACC tournament last year.

It's not really a loss for the ACC though because UVAs style of play was horrid. Just horrid. I hated watching UVA play, especially in the first round of the NCAA where they crapped out spectacularly except once. Serious guy maybe but I hated his style of game.

Leonard Hamilton?

Unless something is done with NIL the schools with large bases and from large metropolitan areas will soon devour the smaller schools because they will have deeper pockets. Possibly a few schools like Duke with so much national appeal might survive but I fear money will quickly win out.

I know nothing and don't want to speculate. But for those who are so worried about the players, Jason Williford is an associate coach who has been with the program for 16 years. Ron Sanchez is an associate coach who has been there for two years but was also there under Bennett for a while before leaving for five years to coach Charlotte. Orlando Vandross (related to Luther?) has been there for 10 years. Brad Soderberg for 10 years. Isaiah Wilkins four years. That is a ton of continuity and people who know how they do things. So assuming Williford (or possibly Sanchez) is promoted, it is going to be largely status quo. I highly doubt anyone leaves this season.

After the season, I'm sure there will be movement, but it given the chaotic poop show that college basketball is these days with transfers, it will be impossible to attribute the transfers to Bennett leaving vs. something else. Though I'm sure many keyboard wizards will try.

Though if there is even a hint that they are doing a search, Cory Alexander will be even more insufferable this year as he campaigns for the job at his alma mater while doing games. Shudder.

It's the large schools with the big TV contacts that have the big NIL advantage. SEC, B1G. A billionaire booster or two is also helpful. See BYU, Arkansas.

I am sad to see Tony go. I'll admit that I found his brand of basketball aesthetically displeasing, but UVA and the ACC are poorer for his absence. I have no idea as to why he decided to leave at this point, but he's not a moron. He knew the consequences of what he was doing. Whatever the reasons, they were significant enough to him to make this move now.

I can't get my head around how players can transfer mid-semester. Don't they have to be at the appropriate academic level for their year?

Well, getting him off the telecast would be worth it.
Yes, but the charities working the concession stands really need Cory's snack habits several games a year. They get a % of sales at Duke instead of user tips.

I'm surprised by Bennett's decision and timing. I never had an axe to grind against him.

I hope and expect that he decided that he did not have what it takes to get through what is a grueling year for any (every) coach, and that he decided it was better for everyone, including the team, to not try to do it when he did not know that he could. That is best case scenario--as it does not imply health, family, or other concerns--but also seems likely.

And as CrazyNotCrazie said above in post #91, the coaching staff is largely experienced at UVa...

So given Bennett's staff, he made his decision.... I wish him well.
