The waters have been tested, but Slim is OFFICIALLY back!!!

I think this take is a little naive. I am trying to state this in a respectful manner, that does not come off as a personal attack or anything, but I strongly disagree.

Yeah... and then he's gone. He's got something (shooting) that everyone wants. He is raw and had that upside/potential that is so intoxicating for front offices. This is the only off season he will have that untapped/unknown potential that could be an absolute goldmine. After one more year at Duke, he will be much more of a "known".

There could be someone out there in the late teens/early 20s picks that loves him and tells him they'll take him if he is available. It's rare for a guy to come back if they get that feedback.
Right. And then he's in the G League, playing before hundreds of people. Why wouldn't he be better off staying at Duke?

As the resident "Neither, it's empty." guy, I don't look at this as bad news for Duke. If Evans does leave, Jon will figure out a way to make this team even better.

I want him to return if that's his first choice. If he's set on getting to the NBA as fast as possible, then yeah he should follow his heart. Given the team we had this year, Evans was able to focus almost exclusively on his NBA-ready talent, 3P shooting. Next year a lot more will be asked of him. Maybe that excites him, maybe it freaks him out a bit.

Wonder to what extent this is because of Coward signing on and crowding out minutes

I’m counting on him being gone and will be pleasantly surprised if he’s back. It is super rare for a kid from Duke to “test the waters” and then decide to come back.

I’m also confident Scheyer has a plan when this becomes official.

I don't have a lot of insight on how these discussions go, but it seems unlikely to me that a team with a pick in the teens or twenties would make any sort of promise or commitment to take a player who, best as I can tell, is slotted to be picked no higher than the middle of the second round. Why not trade down and pick him later? Or wait to see if a top-10ish player falls into your lap?

Of course, anything is possible. NBA teams do all kinds of wild things on draft night.
If he’s a middle to late second round pick (as he’s currently mocked) then he withdraws from the draft and goes back to Duke. If they want him, they have to make the promise to convince him to stay in the draft. There is no trade down and pick him later if he’s not available to be drafted.

If memory serves, we've not had very many who tested the waters come back to school. So I'm pretty nervous about Cedric, but especially about Slim. Granted, this is the NIL era where it could be more lucrative to come back to Duke than fight for a roster spot or two-way contracts as a late second rounder. You have to wonder if guys like Cassius Stanley or Trevor Keels would have come back with NIL.

I think Slim is back. Yes, "testing the waters" and returning is rare in the past. But now we are in the Scheyer era, and maybe conversations are a bit different. That's my feeling, anyways...

June 15 is the deadline to withdraw from the draft, correct? So now we sweat till then?

Not really.

Players who have applied for early entry have the right to withdraw their names from consideration for the Draft by notifying the NBA of their decision in writing no later than 5 p.m. ET on Sunday, June 15. Under NCAA rules, in order to retain college basketball eligibility, college players who have entered NBA Draft 2025 must withdraw by Wednesday, May 28.

So if a college player (say, Bobi Klintman of Wake Forest in 2023) withdraws from the draft but does it after the NCAA's deadline, then he gets to spend the following season overseas (say, for a team in the Australian pro league) and put his name in the next year's draft (and become, say, a second round pick in 2024).

Yeah, no doubt they would have been back. Totally different era.

I’m worried about Slim. Hope he stays. But with his 3 pt skills and potential, he could go first round. Just my opinion, no inside info.
