The saga of Daniel Jones thread (latest update: Released by Giants)

A couple of good throws, but also a couple of truly terrible throws. No TDs in three games. Didn’t even do anything running. This has to be the end for him in New York, though I wonder how that’ll work with his giant (pardon the pun) contract.

I’m skeptical that he’d be a starter anywhere else. Which starting QB would he displace? All of this year’s rookies are progressing nicely. His passer rating is 31st in the league.

Yeah, I know - he has no protection. But Troy Aikman mentioned a couple of fundamental flaws in his game last night, bits of timing that if he didn’t learn from Cutcliffe and hasn’t learned after all these years in the league, he’s not going to get.

Maybe the Raiders will take a chance on him. They’re in Vegas, after all.

It’s a pity. If he had been rated properly coming out of Duke, he could have been a well-respected backup somewhere who occasionally filled in and made flashy plays. At least he got paid.

I’ve rooted for DJ his entire career (and always will). But truth is I just don’t think he’ll ever be more than a Trent Dilfer-type QB.
I think Daniel is way more talented than Dilfer. He just doesn’t have a good team to support him.

What was the game appearance number that Daniel had to hit for the contract to be fully guaranteed?
I did a google search on this and got a lot of hits it is a very popular topic of discussion for obvious reason. There is no game appearance guarantee. If they cut him after the season, they take a moderate cap hit but owe him nothing (I still don't fully understand what "dead money" is vis-a-vis "cap space"). However, if he gets hurt, he is guaranteed to get paid $23 million next year. So at some point it will likely be in the Giants best interest to bench him to make sure he doesn't get hurt. This is particularly relevant given their awful line, which increases the likelihood of an injury.

I'm not a lawyer or a doctor but I would be very curious to see the contract wording as to what qualifies as the level of injury that guarantees his contract. If there were halfway decent lawyers and/or agents negotiating the contract, I'm guessing a lot of attention was paid to that, though there is likely relatively standard language on the topic that is used in a lot of NFL contracts.

I thought Daniel was a count slow on a number of short passes. Disappointing, really.
That play in the first half where he waited two beats too long before throwing it to Shepherd - and Fitzpatrick breaks it up as a result - really encapsulated his problems. As Aikman said, he tends to throw it after the person is open rather than when they're going to be open....and in the NFL that's often too late. Jared Goff is nowhere near the athlete that Jones is, but his superpower is throwing it on time.

I'm a big Giants fan (and obviously a big Duke fan). Daniel has a lot of positives and some negatives but honestly the Giants have ruined him. He threw 24 TD passes in 13 games his rookie year. From there... utter disfunction. He had a fumbling problem to start his career and that needed to get fixed and for the most part it has. So why did he go from 24 TD passes to never reaching that again? Did he somehow get worse?

He's not a great QB but he's also not nearly close to the biggest problem the Giants currently have (or have had for the past 5 years). Take last night for example... they had 11 penalties, 10 of them on offense. 2 of them were holding... holding penalties happen. The other 8? 2 delay of games. 2 illegal shifts. 1 illegal formation. 2 false starts. 1 illegal man downfield (this has happened like 4 times in the last 3 games). All of these are signs of a team that just isn't well prepared.

More evidence they aren't prepared? They go for 2 late in the game (mathematically correct play) and somehow complete both the play. When the ball is hiked 1 of the players is looking the wrong way... 3 others of them never move from their set position. What is going on?!

The fumble Jones has late has 1 of the best defensive players in the league single covered and he gets past the OL in approximately .2 seconds and rips the ball from Jones' hand. Not sure what he's supposed to do there.

The interception late was a bad throw and those who are critical of Jones will blame the game on that but there were infinite bad plays that led up to that.

Jones is the best QB on the Giants roster and in a normal situation they would play him the rest of the year and then make a decision this offseason about his future. Given the injury guarantee in his contract... they may have to make a decision to sit him at some point (similar to the Broncos last year with Wilson). Either way... this will not be his last opportunity to start in the NFL. He's good enough that even if the Giants don't want him back (and I think there's a chance he comes back and either starts the year w/ a rookie in the wings or competes w/ a veteran they bring in) then he will get a chance with another team. Likely not stepping into a starter role but a backup that will eventually get another chance.

- A Frustrated Giants fan.

First drive by Giants is so typical. Team runs the ball a bunch of times and gets to the Washington 30ish. Next play call a screen and a player hits Jones unblocked causing a fumble which was lucky not to go right into the arms of a rusher. 🤬

Giants left tackle completely misses his block resulting in Jones being blindsided. Giants offensive line is garbage.
