The "Not Classic Rock" listening thread

X has a new album out today. Supposedly the album and accompanying tour will be the end of the line. Sad to see one of the greatest American bands call it a day, but pretty amazing that they lasted 45 years. When I arrived in LA to start law school in August 1979 they had been signed but their first album hadn’t come out yet. They were part of a cadre of “unsigned” local bands that included the Motels, the Blasters, the Go-Gos, the Plimsouls, and Los Lobos.

My favorite band has been Blink 182 for a while (I first saw them at their first Warped Tour before they hit it big). At times I’d listen to them on Spotify with my kids in the car (not necessarily age appropriate, but I digress). Last year my 10 year old said she saw they were going on tour and it would be fun to go (she has never been to a concert). I got tickets and didn’t tell her. Fast forward to a few weeks ago, we went to the show at Citi Field in NY. Imagine my surprise when she was singing along to every song they played (except one unreleased one). Not only that, she somehow knew one of the songs was technically Boxcar Racer and not Blink 182. Proud girl dad moment.

Wife’s niece’s new album drops tomorrow; we got it a day early.

I’m biased, but I think her contined growth as a songwriter is mighty impressive, and the band just keeps getting tighter (if there’s a better guitar player in Asheville than Matt Smith, I’ve yet to hear him—and I’m a huge John Doyle fan).

Hope y’all will check it out.

I’ve been a fan for a few years.

One of my claims to fame is that when I was in medical school in New Orleans in the mid-80s, I played bass in a cover band that gigged around the city. One of the spots we played most frequently was Jimmy's on Maple Street uptown. One time X was playing the same week we were, so my band's name was up on the marquee with X.

When I read the 'local scene paper' I almost had a heart attack, because it had X playing a date we had already booked, so I thought we were going to open for them. We got a call from Jimmy's later that day to ask us if we could move to the next night because they were able to get X to come play.

Still, the marquee had us right below them. It was pretty exciting since I was a huge fan. We covered 'White Girl' in our shows sometimes, and the guitarist and I played 'Hungry Wolf' during rehearsals just to piss off the drummer.

Very nice sound.

If you like the sounds of Michael Hedges, Don Ross, or Tommy Emmanuel, you will probably like Mike Dawes, who has a new album out now on Bandcamp and elsewhere called Galactic Acid. It's a weird title for fingerstyle solo guitar, but OK. You can stream or download the track Cloud Catcher on Bandcamp for free if you want to check him out. I don't have a stake, I just like his stuff. If Bandcamp isn't your thing, here's the YouTube of it:

Just listened to Lonesome Ace Stringband, a 3 person bluegrass band from Canada. They do a great cover of "Stagefright" by The Band

For various reasons, I had not been out to hear live music for a while.

We heard Band of Heathens (one of my favorite bands) and Hayes Carll last night at the Gothic Theater in suburban Denver.

I had initially assumed that the BOH was opening for Hayes Carll but they played together, alternating BOH songs with Hayes Carll songs with songs from the new album they just released together.

Really, really good show. Highly entertaining. If those guys are coming to your town, I recommend them.

I love Amanda Platt and the Honeycutters. I’ve been tracking them for a while trying to catch a show. I noticed they played a bunch of dates in the UK last month. I’m going to see them play a short set at a free festival in Floyd on Saturday and hoping catch a full show later on the tour.

I agree that she’s grown considerably as a song writer. Can’t wait to hear the new record!

Heck yeah. That's a great band. Very cool.

The UK mini-tour was just Amanda and Evan (who in addition to playing drums in the band is a fine guitarist—I’ve played with him at family gatherings), with special guest Hannah Kaminer. I haven’t heard any audio of the shows, but they were well received.

Been listening to new record all day today and I really like it. My wife just shook her head and said “you do love a wistful melancholy singer”. So I said “well easy for you to be joyful all the time with a husband like me”. She didn’t reply but I sensed an eye roll as she walked away. Very hurtful.

My Morning Jacket coming to Raleigh soon, super pumped! I never miss a chance to see these guys. Saw a clip recently where Jim James and Nathaniel Rateliff were playing a Springsteen tune.

Also, not sure if there are any King Crimson fans out there in the RDU but Beat (80’s era KC with Belew, Steve Vai, Tony Levin and Danny Carey) will be at the Carolina Theatre in October. I’m ready to have my face melted.

Tony Levin has a new album out this week.
