The "Daniel Jones deserves his own thread" thread

Yeah, Washington was just the boost he needed!

Yep -- my hometown Commanders, making Daniel Jones look good for his whole career.

That said, he's 10-for-19. You could argue that he's had to throw the ball away at times, but I think it's pretty obvious that the Giants simply don't trust him to work through a progression. If the first guy isn't open, either run if he has a ton of room or throw it a mile out of bounds.

Impressive TD pass after snapping the ball with minus-2 seconds on the play clock.

(Honestly, do refs even look at the play clock any more? Or is it part of what I often call the anti-Washington conspiracy, in which all the politicians who go back to their home districts to complain about "Washington" plant a seed in the minds of the American populace as a whole, including NFL and NHL officials who don't recognize that the problem with "Washington" is actually the cretins the rest of the country elects and sends here, and I might be off on a tangent here. In fairness, it's not their fault that Commanders o-linemen have false-started five times in the red zone.)

For those not watching -- the subplot in this game is that the Giants' kicker, Graham Gano, pulled his hamstring trying to catch up to the Commanders' returner on the opening kickoff. (Austin Ekeler ran it back all the way, but of COURSE Washington committed a stupid penalty to wipe it out).

So the Giants have been going for it on 4th down and going for two. They've missed both two-point conversions. It's 18-18.

The Giants' truly spectacular rookie WR, Malik Nabers, drops an easy catch on fourth down. You could argue Jones could've made the throw a little easier for him, but Nabers still should've had it. Shocking mistake from a guy who has been killing the Commanders today and was a bright spot for them in their difficult season opener.

2:04 left. The Commanders will drive to the red zone and fail to get in the end zone once again, and their new kicker will kick his seventh FG of the day for a 21-18 win.

It does boggle my mind a little that NFL teams don't dress out a second kicker if they don't have any faith in their punter's ability to kick.

But I can't complain -- Commanders win and Jones didn't look terrible.

The punter who missed the extra point try after the first touchdown.
It is not that hard to kick an extra point. I know there is a lot going on, pressure, etc. but come on. This is ridiculous. And it is particularly frustrating that Gano got hurt on a play that got called back. I watched most of the first half then went out to enjoy the nice weather. Lousy day to be a Giants fan.

Fittingly, my son was playing football this afternoon on the middle school field and I played around with them for a little bit. For fun, I lined up for a maybe 30-yarder and missed wide left by a few feet. I might have tried a field last time around 30 years ago and am pretty confident I make that kick the next try. Oh, I was also barefoot and had zero practice or stretching. So yes it is surprising no one on the roster was capable…

Giants too focused on developing the OL to practice 2nd PK extra points.

i know it's all tongue in cheek, but kicking on a live snap with the defense coming at you is a different ballgame.

disclosure: i've never done it, i would never want to do it....but it's gotta be next level in terms of composure, timing, and launch angle, if one isn't used to it.

I know a guy who's son is a D1 punter. Out of high school he was a top five punter and kicker. Went to USC for a few years and didn't do all that great. Transferred to Ohio State and didn't play last year because the kickers ahead of him were seniors. Transferred again and is at ASU now. He's only punting and kickoffs now. His dad tells me that he's been told that his son is very likely to make an NFL roster as a punter and kickoff specialist but his ability to make field goals makes him a great emergency kicker (he also kicks a lot of the very long FG attempts).

There is a mental calmness that is required that a lot of people don't have. Applies to the holder also. I was so pissed at my holder for panicking and running on an XP when we were playing club football at the cheats crappy astroturf practice field, that I took it out on the guy that ran towards me thinking he was going to block the kick.
