The Brotherhood Podcast (hosted by CFos)!

I know the the Podcast is heavily edited, but still, I like the way that Caleb is growing into the role. He is much smoother and self assured.

I really enjoyed hearing two players from different teams, who have not become NBA players (yet), share their experiences both at Duke and afterward. They, like so many other athletes, make me proud of what Duke athletics is doing.
If you mean Steward and Bolden, this isn't quite accurate: Bolden has played in 18 NBA games. I suppose one could debate whether that means he has "become an NBA player", but he's at least played in the league.

The Battier interview is great, as expected. What I think is amazing, and speaks to Battier's ability to bring out the best in his teammates, is that this is BY FAR the best CFos has been as the host. A big part of that is having a great guest who answers in an expansive way that invites the host to probe deeper. You can tell that CFos is very excited to be interviewing Shane, and is very comfortable and interested in everything he has to say. This interview is 50 minutes long, about twice as long as the average CFos hosted Brotherhood pod. What can you say about Battier, the dude is a winner in all ways. In his front page article, JD King wrote, "If you had to pick the most absolutely Dukiest Dukie of all time, if you’re of a certain age, you might think King Arthur (Heyman). Possibly Jim Spanarkel or Kenny Dennard if you’re a 70’s kind of person. For most of us though it’s hard to get past Shane Battier as the ultimate avatar of all things Duke." I think that's right. Grant, who was much quieter as an undergrad, is making a late charge with his currently insane list of jobs and accomplishments, but Shane is probably the logo right now.

As an occasional guest on the DBR pod, I'm sure Jason and Donald would unequivocally echo this sentiment with regards to my presence... right guys? ;)

I listened to the latest CFos Podcast. Neil Begovich was on. What an impressive young man! He is so happy to be on the team even though he knows he could get court time somewhere else.

Funniest line is about the last time Neil had a dessert. Unbelieveable.

Begovich is so darn impressive--articulate, humble, witty, appreciative, and perfect hair. I got to thinking that when mop-up time comes and he gets in that most of us will be thinking that we hope this unskilled nice fellow can manage a basket. But I'd bet money he can flat play the game--he just has too much firepower ahead of him on the bench, something he accepted coming in.

It was great to learn more about Neal Begovich who seems like another amazing kid to have in the program.

I was trying to figure out how his Dad died so suddenly, per his comments, and, in doing so, found out that the real star of the family seems to be his Mom!

Also, CFos continues to positively evolve as a host. I think it's instructive that he (Caleb) says he doesn't watch TV shows, he just sits down and (re)watches Kyrie and Devin Booker highlight reels. I also liked Caleb telling Neal that the next time he goes to Idaho, he wants to go along because he hasn't done much traveling and wants to get started. The kid is classic.

CFos gave a doubletake when Bego said his favorite vacaton spot was Idaho. But, then realizing he was serious and learning why the solitude of the mountains is so appealing, he nearly invited himself along with Bego on his next mountain trip. It was a warm moment.

Dave Bradley and team need to do a reel of Caleb's double takes...the one you describe, the one when Kon said his friend was showing a pig at the Wisconsin State Fair, etc. It's really cool to get to know CFos in this way, as he introduces us to everyone else.

I wonder how Caleb was chosen for the Podcast, or whether he was simply the first to volunteer. Is he chosen by the team? By the coaches? Or do they want to throw some NIL his way?

The reason I ask is I'm getting the feeling that he's a popular guy who is really vested in Duke and perhaps we are just starting to see his personality and social skills.

I would guess that as returning rotation guys, he and Tyrese had the best potential to be chosen and I get the vibe that this kind of thing isn't really Tyrese's bag. I agree with your impression of him, and I also think that if given the chance, Isaiah Evans would wrestle him for the mic.

Tyrese Proctor is this week's guest.

I took so many notes but am not going to share them because you need to listen/watch because it will get you so excited for the season that you will be ready to jump out of your chair. There is no non-team stuff in this pod, it is all about the current squad, how they are gelling, what their expectations are, etc.

LET'S GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok, I'll go first. Best podcast of the year. These two are roommates, running mates and obviously really like each other. Very cool dynamic. It's a must listen. Some nuggets...

Practices are crazy hard and competitive. A whole different level than last year. "Practices are way harder than our games"

More love for Kon. But then also some good love for Darren Harris, Khaman, Maliq. They seem pretty in awe of Khaman on the court...

Team will play fast. On offense but also picking up full court defense. Expect a lot of guys to play.

Guys are competing hard for minutes between the lines but then they let it go and are "boys" off the court.

So much more good stuff on the schedule, the recent pro weekend, how Scheyer is different this year, ... Definitely worth a listen.

I will believe this when I see it. Multiple times. And maybe not even then.
Yes, Duke always plays fast in the off-season. And picks up full court. And goes 11 deep.

There are good reasons to think Duke will play faster this year and use more players, so I am hopeful.

Plus, we have had multiple injuries either during the offseason or the beginning of the year that have restricted practices with a full team. It would be nice to start at 100% and be able to implement what Scheyer wants to do from the start.

This year will be a good indicator on tempo in the Scheyer era. Duke isn't historically slow - Coach K teams were sometimes fast (2019), sometimes slow (2010), and often in the middle (2015). Coach Scheyer's two teams have been slow, but that's a small sample size. Player Scheyer's teams, as I recall, were pretty slow.

Coach K adapted his style to the roster in many ways, including tempo. Will Scheyer? There is reason to think this year's roster will play better faster compared to last year. On the other hand, we have the same starting point guard, and that seems to be a key variable when it comes to tempo. So maybe it comes down to whether Proctor is an effective point guard at a faster pace.
