Bolden also came across very well. I enjoyed hearing him talk about connecting with non-sports-playing fellow students at Duke and enjoying the peace of the Gardens.
This is the first time I have ever heard a player mention the Gardens and, as it was probably my favorite place on campus, it makes me like Ques even more.
While I don't have any inside info on either player, Ques' journey reminds me a bit of Shav's. While Shav was much more hyped coming out of high school, they both struck me as gentle giant types who were quiet and country more than city types. After leaving Duke, while having a few NBA stints, Shav spent most of his career globe trotting as a hoop ex-pat and, per his IG feed, seems to have become a citizen of the world. Ques is on that same path. While I am sure he wants to be in the NBA, he became an Indonesian citizen so he could play for their national team and spends lots of time in Bali and really wants to vacation in the Maldives. If you asked him where he wanted to vacation when he was at Duke, I doubt that would have been his answer. Basketball takes these guys on such a journey if they are open to it.
I also thought it was telling that both guys basically said, in hindsight, they wish they had been confident enough to listen to their own hearts and do what they really wanted to do instead of being influenced by others. That is a VERY tall order for an 18-20 year old, but I am glad they are there sharing that info with the current players.
Duke Pro Weekend is a great idea...combined with the K Academy, it is a way to keep the Brotherhood from being more than a brand, and I really like how this one attracted a lot of recent guys whose NBA dreams failed to launch or struggled out of the gate.
