The big Bill Belichick & UNC football catch-all thread

Inside Carolina just posted an article on a Belichick interview.

Second sentence: “The eight-time Super Bowl Champion joined "The Pat McAfee Show" on Monday…”*

Six actual championships is apparently not enough for either their basketball team or their football coach, so I guess they can just make up stuff over in the land of powder blue pixie dust.

*in his case, he was the DC for the Giants wins, but people tend to give him credit only for being HC.

You’re forgetting the two championships voted him by the Helms Bakery.

Upon reading that, I figured he had a couple somewhere as a coordinator and Wiki confirms it: both others as a Giants coordinator.

It does seem like a bit of a Hail Mary pass, especially with BB structuring the buyout so he can easily dip to the NFL. But it's also possible it looks like a brilliant move in 2-3 years. I'm much happier with Manny, if we can keep him...

From some authoritative (and completely unbiased) reporting in this thread, his son is drug addled. So we've got that to look forward to.

UNC agreeing to such a ridiculous contract reminds me of my Lakers drafting Bronny. Just complete lack of institutional control and lacking even a modicum of self-respect.
Much respect for your comment about the Lakers, bluedevilwildcats 🫡

Most fans defend their team to the end. But in this instance, they probably don’t deserve defending, and I respect your calling them out.

Sigh.

OK, I have a horrible, terrible, no good question.

What if...the Lakers DIDN'T make a bad decision in drafting Bronny?

First, a confession. I clicked on a clear click bait link, which is how I got the info I'm about to share. My bad.

So, the Lakers used a second round pick on Bronny. I assume at that point in the draft, the chances of getting significant value from the pick are not zero, but are not great.

The point here is that it's being reported that the Lakers have sold 500,000 units of Bronny's jersey, for over $50M of revenue. If that's correct, that's a huge return on a pick that had pretty small basketball value.

I can't imagine that the Laker's GM actually said, "Let's draft Bronny! The secondary revenue alone will be worth it.". On the other hand, I can definitely envision LeBron's agent making that argument.

So, do players like Jared McCain have additional value in the current era? Or is this a complete one off?

That story has not been verified and there is a lot of speculation that it is a Rich Paul plant

Great article from Matt Norlander that asks some poignant questions for UNC: where will the money come from to pay Belichick and his staff and his promised NIL budget, and will that detract from the money available to the basketball team? He also dives into the Dybantsa recruitment and how the three finalists came up with the money to comprise their offers. Fascinating stuff!

Dude's clearly been reading this thread...

"Like sands through the hourglass..."

Bring on the drama, baby!

According to the NFL Network, “multiple” NFL teams have approached Belichick about their coaching vacancies. And one of those teams is the Las Vegas Raiders, where Tom Brady is a minority owner.
But Brady has been in touch with Belichick recently as the Raiders weighed the future of head coach Antonio Pierce, who was fired on Tuesday after going 4-13 in his lone season as the full-time head coach.

I will howl if he Lane Kiffins Carolina
As has been mentioned, he has nine million incentives to wait until the summer.

Bill Belichick is due to receive a five-year, $50 million contract for his new role as North Carolina’s football coach.

Each year, Belichick is due to earn a $1 million base salary and $9 million in supplemental income. The first three years of Belichick’s contract are guaranteed.

Belichick can terminate his deal with UNC on June 1, 2025, if he pays the university a buyout of $1 million. It would cost Belichick $10 million if he left UNC before June 1, 2025.
In the same article, he says "he didn't come here to leave", we'll see.
