The big Bill Belichick & UNC catch-all thread

I am very skeptical of this hire . I don’t post much anymore, but I am in North Carolina fan and I just need a place to vent.

Belichick is a great coach, no doubt, and the idea that he can only win because of Tom Brady is over blown after all several of those Super Bowl winning teams had amazing defenses . having said that he clearly lost his fastball the last few years in New England. He hired his crony, Michael Lombardi, who I enjoyed as a podcaster but who had not worked in an executive capacity since 2015. Lombardi son and both of Belichick sons got added to the coaching staff. It just seems like an attempt to get one last payday. Add in the fact that Belichick has never coached in college.

I see one of two things happening either. He’s very very successful quickly in which case I expect him to leave from the NFL ASAP say after the first year or as I’m afraid it’s gonna happen he doesn’t actually do any better than Mack Brown. Maybe he does even worse.

Carolina would’ve been much better off doing what Duke has done the last two times they’ve had to hire a football coach, which is actually hired someone in the prime of their career with a strong college background whether that was Elko and now Manny Diaz.

And the girlfriend thing is just insane. I cannot imagine any of Belichikprevious wives or girlfriends having any say whatsoever in the team.

I think Stuart Mandel, who gave this hire a C- when it was announced is going to be vindicated

Excellent analysis IMO.

It may work great. It may crash and burn. If it works great, he’s jumping ship as soon as he can to the NFL. If he crashes and burns, his warm fuzzy personality will not carry the day.

I see it mainly as a way for Bill to show everyone how good he is, then quickly hand the reins to his son. Can't believe he has long term interest in this.

Belichicks tenure on the short term may not be a success (and like the UNC fan mentioned above, if it is a success, he's going back to the NFL faster than Elko to a Texas brisket buffet). I do think its success is going to be more ancillary, in terms of establishing an NIL collective and getting the stuffy rams club types to buy in. Any college football team that wants any level of success is going to need that foundation in place so it might be beneficial when they (possibly) make a better hire.
