PlagueWatch - Coronavirus

You are just saying that because you ... know things. Bah, humbug. Testing and verification are for wussies. I prefer my drugs and treatments be supported by loudly asserted claims of unprecedented success, especially if they can be purchased on a monthly payment plan. Down with science! What has it done for us, anyway?

Should I wear black to your funeral or would you prefer it to be a less somber occasion with people wearing brighter colors?

My local hospital right now:
  • 103 - in-patient with flu
  • 10 - ICU with flu
  • 47 - COVID in-patient
  • 6 - ICU with COVID
Positivity rate around 12-15% (not as bad as the 25% in 2019). Outside flu season, it's 3-5%.

Mostly Influenza "A."
Among your Covid and Flu inpatients and ICU patients are the age profiles similar? What % under say 60yo? Is either disease hitting younger people more?

I don't have that data unfortunately. While I tried to play it off like I'm a hospitalist perhaps, I admittedly got the information from a local trusted source. :) All I got was >65 and <2 cohorts are much more well represented. It would be interesting to the see the age breakdowns by the two different diseases as you state. My hunch is COVID is older and flu has the younger patients, but I don't have that data for my local hospital from my source to say definitively.

I think my 6-year old would have joined the "in patient with flu" bucket had she not gotten vaccinated -- she got crushed for a long time....but at least was at home for it all.

The FDA just cancelled the meeting of the flu vaccine advisory committee. This meeting is where they decide what strains to focus on for the next year's flu shot. I wonder if there will be a flu shot available in the fall. Imagine what those numbers will look like next year if the is no flu shot.

Covid going around the fifth grade class. Got a text from another dad last night that his kid (who sits next to my son) had it. Tested my son and he was positive despite no symptoms, and he is still OK this morning. I woke up today feeling a bit off but tested and I am OK for now. Oy. I kind of wish we didn't know, but we were supposed to see elderly family tomorrow so glad we know to protect them.

Good luck avoiding it! If you get it, I recommend Paxlovid as it appears to cut down on the risk of Long Covid (in addition to helping with the Covid infection).

Stay away from our basketball team!!!

My SO went to a Wednesday discussion group meeting. The gentleman who runs it said his wife wasn’t feeling well so she stayed home. Friday he sent out an email to the group that both he and his wife tested positive. We’re hoping my SO doesn’t get it again. She doesn’t wear her personal air purifier like I do when I’m with people - Making sales calls, shopping, basketball and football games, in restaurants and convenience stores, etc. She has two of them….. grrrr.

Thanks! I used Paxlovid about 1.5 years ago when I had it and I think it was helpful, though who knows. Luckily I was clear this morning but will test again tomorrow. Unfortunately, our stash of tests is long expired - we tried one of the old ones and it clearly was not working right. So we have to go buy them. Not the end of the world.

My son and his other sick classmate are the best and third or fourth best player on their beginner rec league basketball team that is playing this afternoon, so the Suns are likely in for a beating today. He is largely fine but I will be responsible and not send him. Fortunately we are 500 miles from Durham/Chapel Hill so Cooper and crew should be OK.

Sophisticated ruse to avoid a family gathering?

LOL. Nope. Trip to the motherland (NJ) for a belated birthday celebration for my uncle and I. Spanish/Portuguese food in the Ironbound section of Newark. Highly recommend it.
I like Portuguese food! Just had an Indian waiter in Bermuda who is of of Portuguese decent thanks to the wonders of colonialism

I have two close friends who are Indians of Portuguese descent - Goa is a Portuguese part of India - I believe it is a coastal beach area. I'm sure others here know more than I do.

Portuguese food is incredible - paella, shrimp, steaks, potatoes, sangria, flan. Huge portions at pretty reasonable prices.
