NW Pacific Earthquake - 8.8 magnitude and possible tsunami

I remember years ago when I was in SF and there was a big Pacific quake in the evening. Officials warned people to stay away from the beaches, so hundreds of people flocked to the beach, of course. (the tsunami only caused a wee ripple)...

Sounds like the people who ignore hurricane evacuation orders. Having had my Helene experience last fall, I have some pretty strong thoughts about that.

Sounds like none of the waves that have been experienced so far have been too bad. I’ve seen no reports yet of major damage or casualties.

Kahului on Maui saw the water drop 3.5 feet and then rise more than 9 feet.

at least I know enough now to run like hell if I see the ocean receding in a big way...I'd hate clinging to a palm tree.

That one actually did create problems in some harbors like Santa Cruz.

We’re actually having an event near here to have people practice running away. Never mind the logo that shows what the surfers will do.

There are very few articles that touch on what a Tsunami is, in deeper (no pun intended) detail than a one or two sentence explanation of 'wall of water'. The following article does a very nice job of explaining some of the geometry/physics of Tsunamis and I thought it was worth posting:
