Wow. I am sure things will work out for both Nik and Duke, but this took me by surprise. I am bracing myself for the next surprising disappointment.

If what you’re insinuating is the case, it’s borderline wasting these kids time and it doesn’t sit well with me.
It isFeels like it signals the end of the player development model
Prepare for surprising disappointment.
Until getting this news, I was unsure whether Nik would start on next year's team, which would depend on many factors, including who returns and who we get in the portal.Does anyone honestly think Nik would start on next years team?
How did John Dickinson put it in the HBO series "John Adams"...Ummmm...

It is
Yup. For a kid who is very good but not likely an NBA player, redshirting seems to be ideal. As you get paid for five years of college rather than four, likely more than you will be making as a pro. And at a good college program you are probably being developed better than you would be in the G League or Europe. As long as you don't mind going through the motions of pretending to be a college student.Thats the thing we didn't waste Wilkin's time. In fact he got a free year of development, exposure and NIL.
You said it quite well. Is their any potential good news for Duke forthcoming or is the negative about all we can expect today?Ummmm...

So Evans is returning?
Not what I expected but I guess this is the era of nil.
No wonder we were linked with juke Harris, John Blackwell and miles Byrd.
So Duke is now in the business of developing players for other teams? No it doesn't. Duke will always have big freshmen classes because we have the prestige to get big ones. We can either sell the recruits that we can develop them for NBA or for big inflated NIL offers as transfers.
No other school's bench player will be getting 3-4 million on the market.
Seriously??? If Wilkins leaves, that will mean he graduated High School early, got stronger, had the chance to develop and play against pros for a season, surely got some type of NIL, resources on top of resources poured into him, and then after all of that, he chooses to leave.Ummmm...

Something I stated on a thread earlier today, but there are now OVER 50% of D1 players now in the portal. This sucks, but I think this is simply the reality of the current college basketball landscape.
If Dame returns, Nik would likely be looking at an uphill battle to starting either at the 3 (his preferred position based on some of his comments this year, particularly when Pat was out and he had to play more at the 4) or the 4 (with Cam Williams incoming). His more likely role was as an important 6th man, splitting time between those two spots and likely getting 20ish minutes per game.
That's a big, important role, and one I think we'd all love to have a guy as strong as Nik in. Problem is, there are dozens of other programs who can offer Nik an almost guaranteed starting role and 30+ mpg. And despite the confidence we have in our NIL program, it's would be hard to pay our sixth man as much as some of those other programs can pay a starter (particularly as those numbers go up and up and up).
This one really stings because I think most of us believe Nik is going to end up being a really, really good player. I know I'll be rooting for him (as long as he's not competing against us, haha). But before we devolve into a full-on panic, let's remember what happened during this part of the year in 2024: we lost Sean Stewart and TJ Power under not too dissimilar circumstances. Those moves didn't occur in a vacuum, but were precursors to us getting Maliq Brown and Mason Gillis. It's a messy analogy to call those "trades," but if you do it's hard not to argue Jon Scheyer made the right decision on both those counts.
My hope is that this sad news is a precursor to some happier news, most likely involving Dame, as well as us targeting some "big fish" in the portal that would have indirectly eaten into Nik's opportunities on next year's squad. Let's not rush to judgement until we have the full picture. Until then, I hope we all wish Nik the best and that he ends up finding an opportunity that is best for him.
