NFL 2024-25 General Discussion

Sorry but Steelers fans really have very little right to complain about your franchise. You have had very consistent success, with very few down years and an awful lot of stability, for over a generation. You've done an awful lot of winning. Try being a fan of my team, which is the Dolphins, or being a fan of teams like the Panthers, Browns, Jets, Commanders, Cardinals etc for a few years and then talk to me. I think your perspective would change.

Try being a Patriots fan between 1970 to 2000. Three decades of nothing but sorrow and heartache. Of course things can change quickly, but 30 years is a long time to see your team basically do nothing but lose.

We had chefs season tickets from 1979 to 2008 or so. The 80s were extremely frustrating - great start to the season to inspire hope, horrendous middle of the season to lead to thoughts of giving up the tickets, followed by a great finish promoting the hope that next year is the year. Did make the wild card game one season but lost by 20 points.

Chef Gordon Ramsay?

Not sure where to begin about what feels like the inevitable annual implosion of the Steelers season. What started out so well, where they were exceeding all expectations has come crashing to earth when everyone new was the December gauntlet (Beagles/Ratbirds/KC/Bungles). They reverted back to the dreadful Matt Canada offense. Having thrown away the chance at a home playoff game, they now have to go back to Baltimore (tix surprisingly affordable for a playoff game). I am not even tempted. Last weekend, I went back to the Auld Sod to visit Mama and Papa Turk, and found that one of my Young Turks and his girlfriend were going to the Steelers game. I told them I would rather not turn into a popsicle watching boring football in a meaningless game, and instead opted to watch the surprisingly frisky Pitt Panthers host the Stanford Cardinal (whatever that is), plenty of good seats available as the students were out on break. I got back home in time to watch the second half of the Steelers fiasco.

So driving back on Sunday, I listened to one of the sports yakkers trying to fill air time with "Why shouldn't the Steelers try to trade Mike Tomlin?" ("Well, the man has a no-trade clause in his contract, so that's moot, no?") The quarterback situation is still a mess. Russ isn't going to get paid starters money, and I am guessing the next QB will come from someplace else.

So it's entirely possible that the Steelers could steal this one somehow, because Harbaugh's gonna Harbaugh sooner or later. So I will hang on until the scoreboard reads 0:00, and then see where to shift my allegiances. I'm feeling an inexplicable pull towards Bills Mafia; for some reason, I don't trust the Beagles. With Darth Hoodie gone until next fall, I guess I need to find teams to root against, and we'll start with the Chefs.

OK, that was a bit rambling and long-winded. I'm tired of freezing my Winnebago off, and can't wait to go someplace warmer (hopefully before the ACC tourney).

Plenty of room on the Jayden Daniels bandwagon. It’s a fun ride!

I loved those Lenny Dawson quarterbacked teams, and a Super Bowl winner at that.

GoDuke!

Maybe my memory is fuzzy, but I thought you guys played in the Superbowl in 1985? Sheesh. Talk to some Jets fans and get back to me.

As a Washington fan, it’s been a long 30 years. But we have nothing on some of these other fan bases.

I've been a Commanders fan for more than 50 years. Hopefully with Snyder gone we can build a quality franchise. Snyder not only put a poor product on the field, he did a lot of ridiculous, embarrassing, disgusting things. This season has been a great surprise. Hope we can beat Tampa Bay...feels like we are playing with house money.

I too have been a Washington fan for over 50 years. Snyder set the franchise back and at the same time, like you said he did some disgusting things. The new front office and coaching staff drafted a very good quarterback in Daniels and if he stays heathy, he will be their franchise player for a long time. McLaurin finally had the season I thought he was capable of having. Now if we can get Robinson running like the "Diesel" the offense will be great. Of course, some of that is on the offensive line.

GoCommanders!

Len played before our season ticket years. We have lived here twice. The Chiefs won their first SB after we moved to Atlanta. For a while after we moved back in 1979, we joked that the Chiefs might want to pay us to move away again so they could win another one. Glad we didn't have to take that step.

With 12 wins this seasons, it’s the first time the Commanders/WFT/Skins have won 11 or more games since…..1991! Every other franchise has had at least one 11 win season in that stretch and many have had multiple 11 win seasons. Other than 1/2 a season with RG3 over a decade ago, this is the most optimistic Commanders fans have been in a generation.

However I fully agree that this weekend is really playing with house money. As fun as the Commanders are to watch this year, I don’t think they are ready to compete with the real contenders (like Philly (if Hurts is healthy), Detroit, Buffalo, Baltimore, KC), but if they spend wisely in the offseason (mainly defense, O-line, second WR) with Daniels on his rookie deal they could be a legit contender in 2 years.

Agree, we are the luckiest/worst 12-win team in NFL history. Not even close.

But I’ll take it😀

I appreciate the reality check, apologies if that came off as whining. Us yinzers "of a certain age" certainly have been able to ride out the few low points of mediocrity and unintentional comedy with the Mark Malones, Bubby Bristers, Tommy Maddoxes, and Duck Hodges of the world. Being a little kid clutching the last thread of hope until Franco catches that crazy ricochet against the Raiders, or until Santonio hauls in that high-and-outside fastball and gets his toes inbounds against Arizona, anything can happen on the field. I will never take the winning for granted, and may chortle and mock selected teams going through their eras of futility, and yes, perhaps karma might come around and the Steelers might likely get their own turn in the dock, I can always go down to the Great Hall at Heinz Field and take a stroll down memory lane and remember when they were the kings of the sport, bar none. Whatever enjoyment we've gained from the Steelers is regretfully urinated away on the follies of the Yucko's (until they inevitably move to Nashville or Raleigh).

As a kid, there were 3 years with no watching football games. The next 4 years, we got to watch Super Bowl games live - up at 3ish and, if we were lucky, the game was over before the school bus game. The last 2 of the 4 were Steeler victories. In February 1976, I spent a couple of hours in the bar of the Naija Hotel with Lynn Swann and my mother. He was a really nice man. I got to try on his Super Bowl ring. I tried to talk him into letting me keep it because he was going to get another one. No luck.

Still a Steeler fan but have added the Chiefs as a favorite.

10 teams won 5 games or fewer this season. The prior season it was 5 and the year before that 6.

Is this good or bad for the NFL?
