There's an interesting article by Brendan Marks on Scheyer's approach to this season. Basically, he decided he'd never forgive himself if he didn't go for it in Cooper's single college season (as @SkyBrickey suggested, I think).

It's paywalled, unfortunately, but this link may work for you: https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/62...lagg-march-madness/?source=emp_shared_article

Among other things, I learned about Scheyer's frank conversations with the seven players who transferred and with which coaching professionals Scheyer consults: Will Hardy, Utah HC, Chris Finch, Minnesota HC, Redick, Snyder, Joe Mazzulla, and . . . wait for it . . . Brad Stevens.
This piece by Marks is an excellent article - heartily recommend and the way @MChambers has set it up as a shared artcile should make the link work.

I think it was Marty Clark who never fouled :) Nessley averaged 1.6 fouls in average 7.9 minutes. He fouled
Umm, no. As someone who was there for Nessley's first two seasons, I can confirm that we (repeatedly) chanted "Marty doesn't foul" when he played. This was based on our clear recognition that every time he was called for a foul, it was because of a missed call by the ref. His stat line should have been 0 fouls throughout his entire career. Cuz, "Marty doesn't foul!"

Unable to read it ... but what's the alternative to "going for it in Cooper's single college season?"
It's not like he's not gonna try to build the best team

Not sure this is worthy of a separate thread...

Attending the first & second rounds this weekend. Looking at logistics and such because Lenovo is kind of out by itself with not much around it. Seems like parking is going to be $50 and I'm guessing if you leave after session 1 and come back for session 2 you have to pay again? Is there alternate option for parking around the area? Anyone have a gameplan for between sessions?

Also Saturday is obviously dark and have time to kill, any suggestions? Good place to watch other tourney games that day?

We are staying in midtown area on the east side of Raleigh.

Building the best team meant getting players who would best complement Flagg. Scheyer was very intentional about who he targeted in the portal.

Here's a trick that often works. Open the article, but before the "Give Us All Your Money" pop up, hit (on Windows anyway) Ctrl-A, then Ctrl-C.
This will copy the entirety of the webpage.

Afterwards, open a blank Word documment (or similar) and hit Ctrl-V.

V is "Voila!" as the whole article will be pasted into your Word document.

PS, excellent article.

Parking - if you leave the lot, you have to pay twice. $50/day to park is excessive. It's usually $20. There isn't a good free/cheap spot around there within walking distance. The fairgrounds will probably be closed off. The Ramada Inn does parking for NCSU football, but I'm not sure for this. The Westchase Office buildings and Cardinal Gibbons HS will not be available because it's a Friday afternoon.

Food - I'm doing a cheap tailgate. There are few places to eat, and they will be packed because they make everybody go outside between sessions for 30-60 minutes. Wendy's and Bojangles are a long walk from the stadium.

Yea, I was looking at ParkWhiz for the pricing and its actually at $45 right now and I noticed during Canes games it's about $30. So they are definitely taking advantage of the event. I'm rethinking my plans too and might do the tailgate option between sessions. My original plan was to show up late to session 1 to catch half of the first game and then leave and come back late for session 2 to catch the UConn game. Wonder what Uber pricing will be like to leave the stadium and get a bite to eat and come back versus paying for parking twice.

Exactly, the alternative - which was not crazy, and was supported to varying degrees by people here - was to add Cooper to a strong returning core of Proctor, Foster, Mitchell, and Roach, even if the fit were awkward. That alternative roster was, arguably, more talented than the one we have (certainly on offense), but it would also have had more people clamoring for more shots and minutes, worse spacing, and far worse defense.

Yeah, and there were plenty who bemoaned getting Brown at the expense of Stewart, and Gillis for Power.

Now, I think the staff were pleasantly surprised by James. I don't think they expected him to emerge the way he did. But it's pretty clear that the staff built the rest of the roster around Flagg. Which makes perfect sense when you have a generational talent for just one year.

It’s a bracket. No need to stress. LGD!
No can do. It's in my blood. I've been doing tournaments picks/brackets since I was 10 years old (I picked DT's NC State to win it all, and I felt so good when I was right). From then I have poured a lot of time into them. Let's see - 51 years of tourneys, 4 days per tourney, that's 200+ days of my life consumed with brackets... So I stress. But it's a fun stress, if that makes any sense.

I think your post is fine. I too think Duke will win their 6th NCAAT Championship, but a lot has to go right. The 1999 team proved that. As for Brown, I think he is a great defender, but I think Cooper is the best defender because he's a better rebounder and rebounding is part of defense. My main concern is Cooper may not be 100%. However, we have enough talent to carry us this weekend without Cooper at 100%. Beyond that could be a problem. I picked Duke in about 95% of my brackets because Duke is the best team in the nation when 100% healthy.

GoDuke!
Respectfully disagree that Flagg is better than Brown. Brown has perhaps the best hands and quickness I've ever seen. But Flagg is a defensive stud as well. No need to argue, just a difference of opinion. And if Duke was 100% healthy, I would have marked them in ink six times on my bracket to start off.

I think Brown will be back. Two things point to it. Duke hasn't publicly ruled him out yet. And when this happened last time, Brown had been telling Jon for 2 weeks that he was ready to play before returning to action.

He will need offseason shoulder surgery now no matter what. So my bet is Brown will choose to give it another try starting either with the S16 or E8 game. It's a once in a lifetime kind of moment for Brown.

Disclaimer - I know nothing.
I wish I had your confidence. But shoulders are a tough injury. I've had them, and they are so painful and tough to rehab, especially range of motion. Your body just starts freaking out when you have a shoulder injury. And twice in one season? Ugh. But I've never been a D-I athlete, so...

Anyway, thanks all for not dumping on me. I really want Duke to win. It sounds so entitled to say, but it's been the longest stretch of not winning a natty since Duke won its first one. But Brown's injury lingers in my brain. I might feel better if the talking heads would talk about that more as opposed to constant reference to Flagg's injury, but that wouldn't get good ratings. It's all Cooper Flagg, all the time (not "Flagg", it has to be "Cooper Flagg").

Keep in mind the game ends right at Friday rush hour. You probably can't leave the area if you want to see the 2nd session at the start. Also, don't show up too late. There will be a shortage of spots. They took 25% of the spots away 4-5 years ago for a student apartment complex since it's right on the NCSU bus line. (Part of the parking will go to NCSU commuter students but not much on Friday afternoon.) I wonder what would happen if you showed up at 8AM pretending to be a NCSU student and didn't remove your car until after the 4th game because you had to study so hard for a midterm on Monday❓

Believable if you are claiming to be an NCSU student. If the same situation happened at the Dean Dome, no one would believe a UNC student was studying that hard...

This is a great article for Duke fans. The use of a mental coach is really interesting to me. "Be unf-withable"! 🤬

It doesn't go into detail about the exact conversations with the transferring players, but it does give an idea what Scheyer wanted. Length, toughness and shooting. It did say the following:

“We had very honest conversations with everybody that either did (plan of transferring) or was unsure of what to do,” Scheyer says. “Basically, I was in the mode of not making promises."

“Hard truths,” associate head coach Chris Carrawell calls the conversations Scheyer had to have. “That’s growth, to have those conversations. And he didn’t back down. Stayed steadfast with what he wanted it to look like.”

"Scheyer told all his players that he would remain committed to them — as long as they still wanted to be at Duke, that is, and accepted what that entailed."

And with that, players left. On the other hand, the article talks about James' recruitment. Basically he was the guy they really needed, and all James wanted was to know that he could compete and be rewarded if he won out. Scheyer loved that.

I highly recommend The Athletic for hard core sports fans. Its long form articles are generally worth it.

And not to you know what anything, but the Athletic consensus was at a certain team that this site really likes is their pick to win at all

I was also going to share about this article but hated that it would be paywalled for some. There were so many fascinating nuggets in it, including what you shared here about him going all-in on Cooper's season and also his contingent of coaches/former coaches that he's in constant contact with.

What I also found interesting is how he and his staff are working with a sports psychologist and also how he came to the realization that the best teams are those that have the perfect blend of offensive and defensive talent. It's sounds obvious but, given that this is the first Duke team since the one in 1999 to rate so high in both on KenPom, it's easier said than done to pull it off.
