NCAA Men's D1 General Discussion

Florida manages to lose to TCU. Now TCU did play a good game against Michigan but this team also lost to 2-5 New Orleans😳

VT got smoked by almost 20 points against VCU. It was the third place game for the Battle 4 Altantis, so I take it that means the Hokies come in dead last.

Edit, they aren't dead last, but they sure ain't first. Their other loss was to St. Marys. Not the best way to rep the ACC in the Bahamas.

Can’t remember hitting the trifect, ever in my longish life, of Duke hoops win, unc loss, and Dallas Cowboys win on the same day!!
Yesterday was a fabulous sports day in our family!! Now, if only the Bears can beat the Iggles!!

Tobi Lawal, one of VT’s best (maybe the best) big men was out for both losses in a walking boot. I believe he got injured in the win over Colorado State.

What was with the blue floor? It wasn’t in Boise
The Knicks are at home tonight (they're on now) and it's the in-season tournament whatever they call it. NBA Cup, I guess. Where they make the floors very bright so that viewers know it's more than a run-of-the-mill regular season game.

They just didn't have time to change the floor. Busy day at MSG.

Stanford, down by two with a few seconds left, just missed a free throw on purpose, got the rebound and hit a three to knock St. Louis out of the ranks of undefeated teams.

SMU just beat Mississippi State in overtime as well.

Today's ACC games:

Texas A&M 95, FSU 59
VCU 86, Virginia Tech 68
Wake Forest 86, Northeastern 73
Virginia 95, Queens 59
Miami 78, Georgetown 65
Stanford 78, St. Louis 77 (Stanford wins Acrisure Invitational)
Clemson 92, Alabama A&M 56
DePaul 75, Georgia Tech 61
SMU 87, Mississippi State 81 (road game for SMU)
Pittsburgh 67, Ohio State 66 (home game for Pitt)

Note that Torvik had VCU ranked in the top 50 and a slight favorite over Virginia Tech. Virginia Tech got to within 6 with about 8 minutes to play, so it wasn't quite as big of a stomping as the final score shows.

The ACC's only "bad loss" today was DePaul over Georgia Tech. GT was behind by just 4 with less than 4 minutes to play. However, DePaul lost by just 2 at home against Northwestern earlier in the season, so they are probably a top 100 team.

And the ACC picked up impressive victories over the Big 10 (OSU), the SEC (Mississippi State), the Big East (Georgetown), and the Atlantic 10 (St. Louis) to go with its 3 losses to the SEC (Texas A&M), Big East (DePaul), and A10 (VCU).

All of the records below are from https://barttorvik.com/ --

Conference records to date, excluding all Quad 4 games:

Big 12 42-17
Big 10 42-23
ACC 30-28
WCC 23-22
SEC 23-26
A10 20-25
Big East 19-24

Conference records to date, excluding all Quad 3 & 4 games:

Big 12 33-17
Big 10 28-22
ACC 21-25
WCC 10-14
SEC 16-23
Big East 11-22
A10 7-16

Conference records to date, just Quad 1 games:

Big 12 16-15
Big 10 12-14
ACC 9-19
SEC 8-18
Big East 5-18
A10 2-8
WCC 1-5

Just in terms of quality wins, there is a good argument that the ACC is outpacing the SEC so far this young season.

Let's hope that this trend continues next Tuesday and Wednesday. Torvik currently projects 11 SEC teams and 8 ACC teams to make the NCAA tournament with Wake knocking on the door. A nice (or at least a decent) showing by the ACC next week could go a long way in helping Duke's NCAA seeding, especially if ACC teams could beat the majority of SEC teams not on Duke's schedule.

Note that Torvik's algorithm currently favors SEC teams over ACC teams 7-3 on Tuesday and 6-1 on Wednesday. However, 8 of Torvik's 13 SEC favorites (vs. just 1 of 4 ACC favorites) are projected as less than 3 point favorites.

Nice win for UConn at the Phog without Tarris Reed. The kid Mullins is a player. Kansas’ offense was horrendous and it wasn’t because UConn was playing lock-down D. Still, UConn had attained a level of confidence where I always expect them to come back from whatever deficit they face to make it and game and/or win.

Interesting and detailed discussion about Kentucky's woes from Will Warren:

"Every team in America, every single one, is going to have a deficiency. The goal is to construct your roster so that A) your deficiencies are mild at best; B) your best features are emphasized so greatly that it more than covers up for your deficiencies; C) the roster doesn't become a deficiency itself because of ill-fitting talent. I believe Kentucky may be staring down a season of C, because they have several trolley problems that appear unsolvable to me. These aren't in order of importance, because they're all equally important."

Doug Gottlieb update:

Come on, now. A post like this is begging for a visual aid.

Kyle Boone (the CBS Sports reporter) shared the video.

And that video is begging for the historical comparison.
