NCAA Men's D1 General Discussion

I would go a step further and say michigan is not a lock for a 1 seed. They play 0 top 25 KP teams until the end of january...and then end with 7/12 against top 25. Their schedule is STUPIDLY backloaded.

I'm also not sold on the quality of the competition they've played thus far.

Don't get me wrong, they are really really good...but they also play fast, making point margins appear gaudier than they would otherwise. Wake took them to OT, TCU had them on the ropes, Maryland had them beat for 25 minutes last night. They've beaten up some paper tigers, IMO.
Well, they beat Auburn by 30, then Gonzaga by 40. It's the latter game that got everyone talking about Michigan.

I know Minnesota is not exactly top tier Big Ten, but as folks who pay a bit of attention to UNC, we should note the play of former Tarheel Cade Tyson since he got outta Chapel Hill.

Cade put up 38 points and 11 boards yesterday in a win over Texas Southern. His season will probably be devalued a bit because he plays for a poor Big Ten team, but 22+ ppg is impressive and if things continue the way they have been, Cade is making at least 2nd team All-Big Ten.

His UNC season sticks out like a sore thumb in his career. Check this out:

Funny, but Eliot Cadeau, Jalen Washington, and Ven-Allen Lubin are all doing better, too. Wonder if that's just a coincidence? Too be fair, Ian Jackson doesn't seem to have experienced the post-UNC bump yet.

WOW! "Sticks out" is an understatement! I'm glad he's getting a chance to find playing time and success this year.

This board always tells me how overrated gonzaga is....and auburn doesn't play any defense.

Maybe it's copium. time will tell.
Having some really great wins (or at least one - not clear how good Auburn is) together with some more pedestrian performances would be consistent with the possibility that Michigan is really good, but not the powerhouse #1 team that the metrics are saying right now. But we may not learn a whole lot more about them until the January 30 game against Michigan State.

And another player from that 2024-25 team who may have gone pro pre-maturely was Drake Powell.

He was a local kid, went to high school just 15 minutes from the Dean Dome. Certainly showed flashes of athletic ability and some skills, but his numbers for the season were a modest 7.4 points/3.4 rebounds/1.1 assists. He's getting some minutes with Brooklyn and shooting decently, but could well have gone higher than 22nd in the first round with more development in college.

The Heels are not what they were, and Hubert has been there for a while now.

Heels are now a football school 😀 and most don’t give a s..t about Carolina bball. Hubie should be safe as long as he doesn’t pull a Michigan HC stunt.

Well, it's not like UNC was reaching the top of the shelf in the ACC last year either 🤣

No one at all is a lock for anytime in December.

Watching UNC they have some really nice pieces. Especially inside with Wilson and Veesaar. I really like both of their games. And I've always liked Seth Trimble. The one thing they don't have is a point guard which is a shock. Because they had such a good point guard he just didn't have anybody around him last year. And now he's starting for Michigan. But they would be a national title contender with Cadeau. He would be the perfect point guard for their lineup. I'm glad he's at Michigan.

The bigger question is, how many players can spell their own names? ;)

GoDuke!

I attended my first college basketball game in a couple of years today in Boulder. My Colorado Buffs lost to UNC (the good UNC, Northern Colorado)

The game was not televised. I was surprised that there were automatic timeouts at or near every 4 minute mark. I always thought that these were "t.v. timeouts" in order to make some money showing commercials, and that they didn't occur in untelevised games.

Many non-televised games play under tv rules. Keeps game flow consistent.

They are also “media” timeouts for radio and streaming options. So frustrating.

Michigan with yet another 30 point win tonight. This time over a ranked USC team. Michigan is looking increasingly scary. They have just bludgeoned everyone in their way in the last 6 weeks. Plus the metrics are really off the charts. It’s a wow situation.

They are a bonafide juggernaut. Will anything stop them? Heads and tails better in Kenpom, and torvik has them as the second best offense and best defense right now. Scary good.

michagan is good, but people are putting way too much weight on these margins.

Consider last night:
1) they played ~15 possessions more than an average team (85 vs 70). In a normally paced game, this is closer to a 20 point win
2) USC had no business being ranked. They're a bubble team. Every computer metric has them closer to 40.

Anyway, relatively easy schedule and fast tempo is making michigan look a lot better than they really are....and they are already really good....but IMO the drooling needs to stop. (of course it won't since people will always view big margins in an uncontextualized way)
