NCAA Football 2024 (national discussion)

You might be familiar with their very athletic QB from Alabama...

Not totally disagreeing with you, and I think UGA will likely beat them pretty badly, but just noting...
Whom I love. There just aren't enough of him on offense or defense. I think Brian Kelly left ND because he didn't think he could get enough athletes to win a national championship there. You can at LSU. Now he isn't crushing it there. But it has been crushed there in recent history. The last time they won a title I was a 14 year old JV basketball player. I am 51.

Unless I’ve missed something, everything with Georgia is up in the air because Carson Beck may not be playing at all.
That would definitely change things for Georgia, but Beck hasn't been amazing, the Georgia team is built on a lot more than the QB, and I think their backup is decent. So, I don't think the loss of Beck would be as impactful as loss of starting QB to other teams but hard to know. The fact that he wasn't in the locker room after the injury and came in for the last play (with a limp arm admittedly), seems to portend well to his availability but you never know. We shall see....

Maybe. But Geoegia fans HATE Beck. He was supposed to be a huge upgrade over game manager Stetson Bennett. And Beck has all the arm talent in the world. And he has managed to be a good QB. Which is the worst thing in the world to have in an era of great QBs. He is definitely not better than the underrated and chronically underappreciated Bennett. UGA fans were excited to see Beck get hurt and his back up come in. And he played pretty well. Not like the Miami situation last year where their back up came in and made me feel sorry for him.

Yeah the backup was very solid until that bad interception (of which Beck has had plenty this year) and still lead Georgia to the point of the game winning play. I saw nothing to downgrade Georgia’s chances of Beck is injured…

As a Georgia fan I can verify that sentiment. But I do think the Bulldogs are better with him than with Gunner.

maybe i'm in the minority....but these teams people are arguing about? none of them deserve to be in.

Indiana? shouldn't have played such a weak schedule
alabama? shouldn't have lost to oklahoma and vanderbilt
SMU? Shouldn't have lost to BYU.

You want to be in? Win your darn games. ESPECIALLY YOU, ALBAMA. If you didn't want weak scheduling indiana and smu to get in over you, you shouldn't have two awful losses on your schedule.

The playoffs started on opening day and y'all put yourselves on the bubble, not the committee.

And Gunner is a Georgia boy who was all-everything in high school.

I've not believed in Notre Dame for two decades. They just always seem to have too many thick-ankled Midwestern kids.
Dude, didn’t you learn your lesson last year after talking the same crap about Michigan? Notre Dame recruits nationally (has for some time); their classes are generally Top 10, and not just because of linemen, and have been trending better under Marcus Freeman. Not saying I’d necessarily pick ND over UGA but that characterization of the Irish program is well past it’s sell by date.

Poor QB play has hurt the Irish in recent years but the overall talent level is very high. Heard of Kyle Hamilton? Kyren Williams? Cole Kmet? Ok, he is a think-ankled Midwestern kid but also a Pro Bowl caliber tight end.

And yet I’d bet a bunch of pies had they faced Indiana or Penn State. No one will ever convince me the top 12 teams are in those brackets released today.
No one (including committee based on rankings) believe top 12 teams made the playoffs.

After watching Big 10 CCG, though, think Penn St would boat race Miami.

And unless we want to just freeze out everyone but the SEC and Big X with one or two spots for others, they need to keep top 5 conference champions in the top 12. I am cool not giving them byes but there are potential moral hazards for the conference championship games if those byes go away.

Edited to change Big XII to X

I’m ok with the five conference teams still getting in, but not thrilled. My biggest gripe is Indiana, who had no business being included. And PSU was ranked too high.

What is Indiana supposed to do though? They played the two championship game finalists from last year and UCLA and smoked them all. It’s not their fault those teams sucked. It’s not like they are the SEC playing 8 conference games to pad schedules and I am saying that as a UT fan. The SEC refusing to do a 9 game conference schedule is cowardice.

I don’t think the goal was ever getting the best 12 teams in. I think it’s a combination of including all the legit title contenders while making sure there is reasonable breadth of conference participation.

And I think they accomplished that this year, although I might quibble with some of the seedlings and probably wouldn’t have included Indiana. The bye issues will get resolved as the format iterates. But I think it is very healthy for the sport on many levels that SMU made it over Bama this year.

The referee for the B1G Championship Game yesterday was Kole Knueppel who will also be an official in the NCAA playoffs.

Don't know much about him, but he's from Wisconsin. Do you suppose he's related to someone on our basketball roster?

Yes, it's a nephew-uncle thing. He worked UNC and NCSU games this year, but I doubt he will be doing our IL football game next fall.

bingo.

For the past decade or whatever, we've had to argue whether mediocre high-record teams should get in over second teams from other conferences. We don't have to argue about that anymore.

We have
- all the conference champions
- the best team from each conference, even if not the champion
- teams with gaudy records that might not have made their conference title game

Pretty much any of the "arguments" of who should be in over the past 10 years would be moot under this format. We know indiana and penn state or whoever aren't the best teams. now they get to prove they aren't on the field. Is that at the cost of alabama? sure. but alabama already proved they aren't the best already.

Now they get to duke it out on the field. Sorry bama and miami y'all ruled yourselves out. tough luck try again next year.

This is a perfectly reasonable take. I was wrong about Michigan. Plus I really like Freeman. Big fan of his.

Edit: also CLEARLY no.

I don't believe you can just choose not to play a game without it being a forfeit and a loss. That's like saying we could have chosen not to play SMU, Miami or GT and then we would be undefeated. Oregon had no reason to play Penn State since they went in as the #1 overall, so why wouldnt they choose to skip the game if that was an option? Someone please correct me if I am wrong.
The difference is that one is post-season, one is regular-season. But you understand my point, it should be a reward to play for a conference title. If it hurts you, it’s no longer a reward.

And while it’s semantics, not sure if you are technically given an invite to the title game or required

And Gunner is a Georgia boy who was all-everything in high school.

I watched the game with my son-in-law, who is the strength and conditioning coach for Rabun County Schools, where Gunner played (at least his senior year). Pretty sure he has more passing yards in high school than a few names even I recognize as a neophyte college football fan - DeShaun Watson and Trevor Lawrence. (who I believe are also top 5 in career passing yardage) Plus, my son-in-law, who for the record got to Rabun after Gunner played there, says he's a really good kid.

Suffice it to say, after the last play of the 1st half, my son-in-law's phone was blowing up with his internal coaches text thread. They were pretty excited.

Yes, my understanding is that Gunner broke both DeShaun's QB rushing yards record and Trevor's passing yardage record for Georgia high schools.
