NBA 2025 off-season thread

I kinda wonder who the Bulls thought they were bidding against for Tre. The $ figure seems about right but why go 3 years? That seems long for a backup PG.

Agreed about Tyus in ORL. He’s also capable of knocking down an open 3, which is a skill in short supply on that roster. Nice pickup for them.
Billy Donovan is a big Tre fan and he brings some skills and traits that are otherwise lacking on the roster. And backup PG may be underselling how they view his likely role, as Tre started 9 of 18 games he played for the Bulls and averaged 25.3 mpg overall. They believe he and Josh Giddey (the nominal starting PG) can play together effectively as well.

Tyus is definitely a good fit in Orlando for the reasons you cite. At this point in his career, he is probably too much of a liability defensively to be a starter on a playoff-caliber team. But he can still be a highly effective backup.

Mason to Charlotte is weird for me. He has what, one year left ? He's still a valuable big who can pass the rock. I was hoping he'd land on a contender, although it's still possible he gets moved to one later in the season.
Might be a locker room move.

I get email from oddsmakers, and one I received today noted that the Hawks have moved from 150/1 odds of winning the title to 25/1, thanks to their recent moves that included "(t)wo above average shooters that can cover defensively for (Trae) Young’s shortcomings in Kristaps Porzingis and Nickeil Alexander-Walker and one sniper that may be the best shooter in the world not named Curry in Luke Kennard."

Pretty good career he's carved out, and the Hawks are looking interesting. I think I went to school with their coach or something.

SkyBrickey says Hornets with KK will contend from day 1.

In the meantime I think this is a great pickup for the Magic. They desperately need a PG that can set up Paolo and Franz and impose some semblance of an NBA-quality offense. I think the Magic are hoping that Antony Black will take a step forward and be a regular starting PG, but Tyus will definitely bring a little more offensive flow and reliability when he checks in. Tyus's defensive limitations are somewhat balanced out by the size on the rest of the team, especially if he's sharing minutes with Jonathan Isaac. I think he may also share minutes with Suggs too to get him off the ball.

Yeah, I really like this for the Magic. A crazy stat is that Orlando has been bottom ten in the league in offense for 13 consecutive seasons. A rental on Tyus should raise their offensive floor. He'll either be their point guard if Anthony Black still isn't ready for prime time, or he'll resume his role as the best and most competent backup PG in the league. And as you point out, he'll be surrounded by elite defensive play.

"Magic but with competent offense" can definitely win the injury depleted East next year. Adding Tyus and Bane might get them there.

I think Jalen Suggs, who signed a 5-year extension last fall, will be the starter as long as he's fully healthy. Keep in mind that much of the first unit offense runs through Paolo and Franz Wagner, so the PG role is kind of de facto. And probably even more so now with Desmond Bane on board. The second unit is a totally different story, though.

That makes more sense. I wasn't thinking of Suggs as a PG, but like you say, the Magic haven't relied on a traditional 1. They probably just slot Bane into the role KCP played last year, while Tyus is the new (and, it should be stressed, improved) Cole Anthony. Suggs hasn't been super durable, and Anthony ended up starting 20+ games last year, so good chance Tyus will have a bigger role.

Suggs is an elite backcourt defender and really helps set the tone for the Magic at that end of the floor. He's definitely not a great creator or perimeter shooter but he can get downhill and is pretty good in transition, so his fit with the first unit is pretty solid. Especially with Bane swapped in for KCP, who was pretty much of a bust for Orlando last year.

Well, withe season in the rearview, it looks like Tyus's bet on himself by taking a 1-yr deal with PHO for a below market rate was a bust. He had a decent year, but PHO was a lackluster team and his personal stats were simply not good enough to justify a bigger payday. Bummer, as he's been one of the most consistent and steady PGs in the league for years, but he's just not flashy.
Don't get me wrong, i would love to be a "bust" and still be able to sign a $7M contract!

Of note for Immaculate Grid players is that Dennis Schroeder is joining the Sacramento Kings, which will be his 10th team (ATL, OKC, LAL, BOS, HOU, TOR, BKN, GS, DET, and now SAC). Not quite Ish Smith level, but he's closing in.

Joining the ranks of other go-to Grid guys like Jeff Green, George Hill, Carter and Jamison, Melo, and Moses.

It was less about him not playing well enough and more that with Booker and Beal (and a bit KD), there were a lot of shot creators who got priority over him. Orlando has a little bit of this in how much Paulo and Wagner initiate offense, but not as bad as Phoenix. It was still a bit of a bust as you say, but more in picking a situation that wouldn't let him shine.

Why isn’t Tyus a good defender? Just too short?

After trading for Collin Sexton and Pat Connaughton and resigning Tre Mann, the Hornets have signed Spencer Dinwiddie. The roster now consists of 86 guards and Mason Plumlee. Playoffs here we come!
Probably means a lot of G league time for Sion, unfortunately.

Those guys are all below average defenders, as is LaMelo. I suspect Sion will get a chance to make his mark on that end and maybe crack the rotation.

I initially saw a headline "Knicks hire Brown as coach" and part of me was hoping they were bringing back Hubie. Is Mike Brown really a step in the right direction from Thibs? Should it have taken this long to make this decision?
