NBA 2025 off-season thread

Yeah, and let’s jettison Jaylen Brown while we’re at it. His contract is ridiculous and I’m not a huge fan of what he brings to the C’s on the court. I’d give him an 8.0 out of 10 and he’s being paid like a 10. We should get as much as we can for him while his stock is still quite high. 🍀
Every top 30 player in the league gets paid like a top 10 player. It's just the way it is.

If Boston can trade Sam Hauser, whose $10M a year deal kicks in now, they can get below the 1st Apron.

If they go into next year with White Brown and Pritchard, they can be competitive and competent while still setting themselves up to get some lottery ping pong balls and add a new Center. Brad Stevens has done a good job this summer.

There is a whole lot of Jaylen Brown chatter. Apparently, everyone with a top 10 pick is talking to the Celtics to see what kind of deal can be made. Gonna be very tough to fit Brown's salary onto many of these teams and you know the Celtics are going to want a LOT in return.

The team that will 100% be a trader today is the Nets. They have 5 first round picks. There is about a 0% chance all 5 of those guys actually end up on the team when training camp opens.

Agreed. I don’t trade JB unless finances dictate it, and it appears they don’t. He’s overpaid by today’s standards but that kind of thing has a way of correcting itself as inflation sets in in the contract’s later years.

Boston next year with JB, White, Pritchard etc is probably still a playoff team if their health holds up. Take a gap year, play with no real expectations, then get Tatum back and load up for 2026-7.

Guys being shopped right now -

Nikola Vucevic. Bulls
Andrew Wiggins. Heat
Jonathon Kuminga via sign and trade. Warriors
Anfernee Simons. Celtics
Nickeil Alexander Walker via sign and trade. Wolves
John Collins. Colin Sextion, Walker Kesslers. Jazz

What do the Jazz not like about Walker Kessler? Is he seen as unable to switch enough on D? I know he cannot stretch the floor at all, but he's a truly elite rim protector and a very nice rebounder on a really nice contract (for this coming season).

Sounds like the Jazz are still in the mode of collecting draft capital. I would imagine other teams like Kessler at his current salary but would not want to pay for his second contract.

I see a Lakers uniform in Walker Kessler's future.

Mason is back with Charlotte on a 1-year $3.6mil contract. Dallas, Orlando and Charlotte all now with three Dukies. Phoenix will need to keep Grayson to join them but that is a crowded backcourt…

I guess the Duke theme now is, play at Duke and if you are not a millionaire before you leave you will be shortly thereafter.

Tre Jones re-ups with the Bulls on a three year deal.

Very happy to see this as a Bulls fan. Tre played very well for them after coming over from San Antonio, and the organization believes (correctly for once) that he was a better fit than Lonzo as a backup PG and change of pace player. Better at attacking the rim, getting to the line and creating in the halfcourt, with minimal give up in terms of on-ball defense, 3-point shooting and playmaking in transition.

Tre signs a 3-year deal worth $24mil while Tyus only gets a one year deal worth $7mil. Seems strange Tyus is making less…
I think part of the calculus is that next year is looking better for free agents than this year. The ramifications of first/second apron are starting to really hit teams and there are still bad contracts on the books. I think the idea is that next year more teams will have roster flexibility and cap room.

In the meantime I think this is a great pickup for the Magic. They desperately need a PG that can set up Paolo and Franz and impose some semblance of an NBA-quality offense. I think the Magic are hoping that Antony Black will take a step forward and be a regular starting PG, but Tyus will definitely bring a little more offensive flow and reliability when he checks in. Tyus's defensive limitations are somewhat balanced out by the size on the rest of the team, especially if he's sharing minutes with Jonathan Isaac. I think he may also share minutes with Suggs too to get him off the ball.

I kinda wonder who the Bulls thought they were bidding against for Tre. The $ figure seems about right but why go 3 years? That seems long for a backup PG.

Agreed about Tyus in ORL. He’s also capable of knocking down an open 3, which is a skill in short supply on that roster. Nice pickup for them.

Mason to Charlotte is weird for me. He has what, one year left ? He's still a valuable big who can pass the rock. I was hoping he'd land on a contender, although it's still possible he gets moved to one later in the season.
