NBA 2025 off-season thread

Wit the finals in the rear view mirror and the draft almost upon us, we need a new thread for the many trades, free agent deals, and other drama that is the NBA off-season.

Post stuff about that here...

Celtics begin to dismantle as they try to trim what could be a massive tax bill next year.

Jru Holliday goes to Portland for Afernee Simons and two 2nd round draft picks**.

Simons joins Boston on an expiring contract, while Holiday is owed around $72 million in 2026-27 and 2027-28. The deal saves Boston $40 million in luxury tax payments next season, according to ESPN's Bobby Marks.

** - Worth noting that NBA teams think 2nd round picks are becoming devalued with so many college and international prospects electing to take college NIL deals rather than testing the draft. Imagine how differently this year's second round would look if Tahad Pettiford, Milos Uzan, Yaxel Lendeborg, JT Topin, Ortega Oweh, Isaiah Evans, Boogie Fland, Alex Condon and several others had stayed in the draft.

Exactly. I'm generally not a fan of what NIL is doing to the college game in terms of the huge amount of movement but it is keeping more kids in school, which I guess is a good thing.

Also, a lot of guys slotted towards the back of the second round are asking not to be drafted so they can choose their own destination.

Interesting point. At this moment in time, college student can earn more money than many rookie NBA players and also have more freedom as to where they want to play. I hadn't considered that.

"Many"??? Not so sure about that but certainly guys who are projected as late 1st or early/mid 2nd rounders have a decision to make. If you are assured of being a first rounder, I think you go.

NBA 2-way deal (guys taken after about pick #40 are likely to get this) - $700k (not guaranteed, can be cut at any time)
NBA rookie min (first ten or so picks of the 2nd round) - $1.400 mil (often guaranteed, rarely guaranteed for more than 1 season)
Last pick of the 1st round - $2.286 mil (2 years guaranteed, with 2 additional years at team's option)
20th pick of the 1st round - $3.049 mil (2 years guaranteed, with 2 additional years at team's option)

Right. So if there are a few players on most power five conference teams making over 1.5 million in NIL, there's a not-insignificant number of college athletes making moreiney than they would NBA year one, correct?

And, they are basically free agents who can choose their team based on the offers and other factors, as opposed to being drafted by the Charlotte Hornets.

I'm just saying - I hadn't considered that there's players for whom it might be advantageous to stay in college for more reasons than simply "getting better."

Oh yeah. The whole "college is worth more to me than the NBA" started to sorta be a thing a year or two ago and really exploded this spring. As I noted elsewhere, there are at least a dozen guys -- probably more like 20 -- who would have absolutely been in the draft in past years who have returned to college for big NIL paydays instead this season.

Meanwhile Tyrese is still in the draft. Sigh...

Is the devaluation of second round picks thing permanent? Eventually the second round caliber guys that are sticking around college will run out of eligibility. Instead of drafting 19 year old Pettiford, Fland, etc. in 2025 teams will be drafting 22 year old Pettiford, Fland, etc. in 2028.

I don't think we can point to anything in this particular age of college athletics as "permanent." Everything is in flux.

I think the presumption is that with an extra year or two of seasoning, Pettiford and Fland either turn into solid first rounders or they show they likely don't have what it takes to be impact players in the NBA and their stock slips further back into the later 2nd round.

We don't add 30 brand new frosh/intl 19 year olds who are first round quality every year. There are always spots in the first round for an older guy (20 or 21) who is excelling.

Sure, but in the scenario where e.g. junior Tahaad Pettiford plays his way to a late first round pick, whoever would otherwise have been pick #30 becomes a second rounder, making a second round selection that much more valuable. Whereas if Pettiford's college play eventually reveals he won't be an NBA player, his absence doesn't diminish the actual value of the 2025 second round.

More tape and more maturity on second round guys will probably make it less likely you're going to find a diamond in the rough star in waiting later in the draft, but my intuition is that it would make it more likely teams will be able to find a guy who can be a serviceable 7th or 8th man, which is a pretty good outcome for a second round pick. Different kinds of value I suppose.

Well, this feels like New Orleans doing the tank thing. On what planet do you want Jordan Poole instead of CJ McCollum?!?! I get that Poole is younger but I really don't understand this trade.

CBS gives Nawlins a C- on this trade. Ouch!

The only healthy player from last year's team that is still on the roster who averaged five or more assists last season was Zion Williamson. This trade would seemingly lean further into him as the point forward for New Orleans, but he still can't really be trusted to stay healthy. Poole is mostly a gunner offensively. The Pelicans have plenty of those. Dejounte Murray injects a dose of playmaking when he comes back, but who knows how he'll look after his Achilles tear. Murray's defensive decline raises further questions, as Poole is a bad defender as well.

ESPN reports that shipping out Porzingis and Jrue will save the Celtics $180,000,000 in luxury tax next year. Given next year is a wash without Tatum, hard to disagree with that.

Meanwhile, Porzingis ends up on the Hawks. Not a bad pickup for Atlanta, and the East will be wide open next year with Tatum, Halliburton, and Lillard all out. Might as well shoot your shot.

Not sure I'd put Lillard in the same sentence as Tatum and Halliburton.

Wow. Porzingis on the move, too. Only 2 returning starters (with Jayson out).

Yeah, and let’s jettison Jaylen Brown while we’re at it. His contract is ridiculous and I’m not a huge fan of what he brings to the C’s on the court. I’d give him an 8.0 out of 10 and he’s being paid like a 10. We should get as much as we can for him while his stock is still quite high. 🍀
