NBA 2024 Offseason Discussion Thread

I don't see a free agent thread so I'll just add it here. Clay Thompson will now be shooting for the Mavs. The long and storied run with Steph in Golden State is over.

And the Celtics are for sale. That sound you hear is Steven and SouthernDukie scrounging in their couches to find some money to make a bid :)

Haha 😂

Sadly, I’m going to come up just a wee bit short, CNC. Not sure about Southern, though; I don’t know his financial situation.

Be that as it may, I’m trying to figure out how the Celtics were able to afford to give Jayson Tatum the biggest contract in NBA history after having just done the same with Jaylen Brown last season. Oh, and today they just gave Derrick White a sizable new contract, which comes on the heels of having given Jrue Holiday a big contract two months ago.

Not sure where all of this money is coming from, but I hope they can continue printing more of it!

Klay Thompson's father, Mychal Thompson of the Showtime-era Lakers, is a bit bummed.

So here's my suggestion. Get the Mavericks to put Klay AND Mychal Thompson on their Summer League roster. They play together for one game in Las Vegas, the first father and son teammates in the NBA, totally stealing the thunder of LeBron/Bronny.

And if that works, you're really going to love my Milt/Dajuan/DJ Wagner idea for 2025.

Heard that Golden State needs the Mavericks to provide a player Golden State would like to finish the deal. Green from Dallas went to Charlotte Hornets. Last night the trade is not closed yet for Klay Thompson.

So LeBron forces the Lakers to draft his wholly unqualified son and then repays them by forcing them to pay him a deal that will severely limit them from making any significant improvements to their roster?

Oh and he also forced them to give Bronny a guranteed deal which is unheard of for a late second round pick.

At this point I'll just assume Bronny will be in the starting lineup on opening night and play 30 mpg.

Man, what was JJ thinking?

I think the Bronny writing has been on the wall for some time now...I'll be pleasantly surprised if JJ can deal with this as he'd like to, most specifically with regard to playing time. Can't imagine LBJ wants to see his son fastened to the bench, but that's obviously where he should be.

I actually think this relieves some pressure off JJ. Don’t reach their goals this year? Well, look what he’s dealing with. Next year? His organization will be paying a 40 year old 50+ mil. There’s almost no way that ends up being worth it from a team building perspective.

So yeah, I could see this noise giving JJ a little more rope than he’d get otherwise. Unless of course Lebron tries to force him out.

Fair point.....but the chances of LeBron taking responsibility for this upcoming car crash are zero. A scapegoat will be needed.

JJ and LeBron may have enjoyed their last glass of wine.

Rob Paluka could not have fallen down any harder......all they needed was one more elite player......sheesh, what a train wreck...

Or this could be a step to help speed JJ on his way to his second NBA coaching job.

He was willing to take less if the Lakers could land another significant piece like Klay. When that didn't materialize he took the almost max. He's still leaving money on the table so the Lakers stay under the 2nd apron which allows some flexiablity.

While I think the drafting of Bronny was a waste of a draft pick, giving him a guaranteed deal is not "unheard of" for a second round pick.

The Lakers' second rounder (#40) last year, Maxwell Lewis, signed a 4 year contract with the team for $7.6M, and $3.1M of that was guaranteed.

Even further down the 2023 draft, #52 Toumari Camara, #57 Trayce Jackson-Davis, and #58 Chris Livingston all signed 4-year deals identical to the one Maxwell Lewis got.

I've shared the story more than once, but the Trayce Jackson-Davis deal, in which his agent told teams with 2nd round picks not to bother drafting him unless they could match the Warriors' commitment, established a precedent than the Bronny deal later copied. If anything, it was sketchier, considering that the Warriors GM and Jackson-Davis' agent are brothers Mike and James Dunleavy.

I’m not sure the Bronny James pick is that terrible, or that much of a gift to LeBron, though it obviously is to some extent and as others have said deserved (to LeBron). I’ve seen some video of Bronny playing where he looked really pretty good. Effective handle, lateral quickness, ability to finish. Granted, his shooting percentages don’t really back that up, but he also missed a large portion of the NCAA season with his heart issue, and really: what 17-year-old potential NBA athlete doesn’t have heart issues? OK that was a little snarky… But it did hamper Bronny’s development and he does look like he has the potential -potential!- to be a serviceable NBA player, at least to me. He’s got some good genes after all
Go Duke! Go JJ! 9F!

I have a hard time believing LeBron forced the Lakers to sign Bronny to fulfill his dream of playing with his son in an NBA Play-In game.

Drafting Bronny was a small price to pay (A) compared to the $100MM over 2 years they just gave his 40-year-old-father, (B) to keep said father happy and (C) to ensure the media maintains its devoted worship of the Lakers moving forward. They were literally paying for the PR.

As for JJ, it's also a no-brainer because, even though I love the guy, he seems like one of the biggest egomaniacs going. He wants all the smoke...and he'll get it, too. Regardless of what happens, he's now got NBA Head Coach on his resume which will make it much easier to get the next job.
