NBA 2024-25 General Discussion Thread

Knicks fan here. Agree with others that Thibs made the most out of the talent he had. He made the occasional curious decision, particularly regarding rotations, but overall I was very happy with him.

I hope there is a plan in place here and this isn't change for the sake of change. Hopefully Dolan is staying busy with the Sphere and letting basketball people handle this. I assume Malone is a top choice (though do your homework on the weird ending in Denver). Jay Wright? Hurley? Bring back Hubie Brown? Nate James coming off his big K Academy championship?

If this isn't resolved quickly because there wasn't someone else lined up then I will be a very unhappy camper.
This has Dolan's stupidity and impulsivity written all over it. Thibs had this line-up for 1 year and we absolutely sucked for 20 years before he showed up. KAT was dropped on him at the last minute before the season started. He deserved a chance to have a full offseason to plan with this personnel. I know all his negatives, but what does it say to prospective coaches that this is how the franchise treats its coaches...rescue us from irrelevance, reach the ECF and...eff you. It doesn't sit right with me, man, not at all.

Playing devil's advocate...the perception may be, inside the Knicks front office, that NY has more talent than Indiana but was just roundly outcoached, from an X's and Os' perspective. Getting beat soundly on transition all series, having inconsistent/failed coverages on pick-and-rolls... are just a couple examples. Meanwhile Carlisle had the Pacers often take Brunson out of the game with blitzing pick and roll coverage (after guarding full court) and leave the Knicks scrambling for offense at the end of the shot clock.

Devil's devil's advocate (angel's advocate?)...while the Knicks probably do have more offensive talent on balance, and compliment that talent with great defenders in Anunoby, Bridges, Robinson, and Hart...it's hard to overcome your 2 best offensive players (Brunson and Towns) being negatives on D. Some of those failed pick and roll coverages could come down to poor execution/choices by Towns, not necessarily bad strategy (hard to know, for sure).

On balance I agree this feels like an overreaction. Thibs did have more success than any Knicks coach this millennium.

Also, the Pacers the last 2 seasons have seemingly taken the mantle of the recent Miami Heat of being the team that way overperforms in the postseason compared to their regular season record.

After a rough start, the Pacers went 40-17 in the last 57 games of the season. For the entire season, they went either 20-10 or 21-10 against the very tough Western Conference. This is no fluke.

Word on the street is that the front office was pushing for some changes on the staff, including punting lead assistant Rick Brunson. Thibs refused and the whole staff was shown the door in response.

Agree that unless Mike Malone is already lined up then odds are this will backfire mightily. And it might even with Malone.

I can never ever pull for the Knicks after this. I am so disgusted by this.

Apparently Johnnie Bryant is high on the list. He was Knicks associate head coach from 2020-2024 when he went to the Cavs in the same role. He is also on the list for other jobs. Prior to coaching for the Knicks he worked under Quin for the Jazz.

What coach that is “ better than thibs” would go to this team after seeing how they reward a coach for taking them to the ECF?

No idea if this is real but still fun. chatGPT predicts next 75 nba champions.
I don’t know what “real” would even mean in this context but fwiw that graphic shows a team that does not currently exist winning the championship just 10 years from now so even by the standards of randomly assigning the next 75 champions, this seems pretty shaky.

Well, having Seattle, Mexico City, Beijing, and Vegas winning before the Hornets, which feels correct.
