NBA 2024-25 General Discussion Thread

I think some of us — myself prominently included — were a bit quick to write off the Knicks. They’re still in this series after a resounding victory over the Pacers tonight.

Game 6 is going to be must-watch television. 🏀

It took a miracle comeback/collapse for the Pacers to win Game 1; it could easily have been 3-2 Knicks right now. Of course, it's not, so the Knicks still need to win two more, but if they can win again in Indy, they're going to have a lot of momentum heading into Game 7.

Meh.

I see as last gasp of pride.
The Pacers will be favored, both in Game 6 (because they're at home) and in the series (because the Knicks need to win two, the Pacers only one).

But it's not because the Pacers are inexorably better; to the contrary, it's been a close series, both by the eye test and statistically. If anything, the Knicks have been a bit better overall - leading by both point margin and efficiency. The Pacers have been a little luckier, largely based on the last two minutes of Game 1, which is the difference in the series right now.

Anything could happen in Game 6, including a convincing Pacers (or Knicks) win. So I agree with Steven - aside from Thunder/Nuggets Game 7, it's the game of the playoffs so far.

Have I told you lately how brilliant and handsome you are?

OKC -750 to win the Finals. Off memory this is the most lopsided matchup since the Warriors/Lakers in 2018 and Lakers and 76ers/Nets from the early 2000's.

Oklahoma City is going to put a defensive stranglehold on Indiana, unfortunately. I just don’t see how the Pacers can overcomey the Thunder’s defensive intensity and pressure.

But here’s hoping they find a way. 🙏

Thibs is out, according to the Athletic. Wow.

"The New York Knicks fired coach Tom Thibodeau on Tuesday, a league source confirmed.

Thibodeau, 67, led the Knicks to the Eastern Conference finals this season, their furthest playoff run since 1999-2000, but the team saw its best chance at reaching the finals end in a disappointing six-game defeat at the hands of the Indiana Pacers. In five seasons in New York, he went 226-174 in the regular season, leading the team to the playoffs four times."

Typical Knicks. Just can't stand to have any success.
I would assume Michael Malone will be a frontrunner to take over.

Yeah, I am shocked. I think they are high on their own supply here. The only positive that could come out of this, for me, is if they hire Hurley and it screws UConn.

This is just an insane move, IMO. Is there anyone out there who doesn't think Thibs is one of the better coaches in the NBA? Sure, he leans on his starters more than most other coaches, but the Knicks bench is mostly trash (thanks to the trades the franchise made to bring in those elite starters).

What are the odds they bring in someone better than him next year? He beat the Celtics and came darn close to making the NBA finals. It feels like the Knicks have gotten better every year under him. What more did they expect him to do?!?!

Knicks fan here. Agree with others that Thibs made the most out of the talent he had. He made the occasional curious decision, particularly regarding rotations, but overall I was very happy with him.

I hope there is a plan in place here and this isn't change for the sake of change. Hopefully Dolan is staying busy with the Sphere and letting basketball people handle this. I assume Malone is a top choice (though do your homework on the weird ending in Denver). Jay Wright? Hurley? Bring back Hubie Brown? Nate James coming off his big K Academy championship?

If this isn't resolved quickly because there wasn't someone else lined up then I will be a very unhappy camper.
