NBA 2024-2025 General Discussion Thread

When the three point line was introduced in college it was too close. They figured that out and moved it back. When the analytics suggest you should shoot threes over good mid-range shots, the three point line is too close. Move it back so that the expected value declines and you should stop NBA games from being three point chucking contests. IT does not seem that complicated. The current length is not sacrosanct.

Now the one complication is the length at the corners. The line is already shorter there leading to an analytic bonus for the corner three. Again, this seems simple to fix. Move the line out to where it makes sense and keep it that distance all the way around. Given the width of the court that probably would mean that there would be no corner three. Fine to me. No more ability to park a median shooting player in the corner and call it good offense.

Sure international exposure
Has nothing to do with diminished domestic interest in the sport

Silver is out of touch and lives in an echo chamber
To play back what I think you’re saying is that Silver is out of touch with a very particular demographic. Seems the NBA is doing quite well with others.

My idea would to be change the 3 pt shot from a line to designated spots on the floor, like maybe the 5 spots where the take the 3 pt contest from, only shots made with at least one feet on the small circle would count as a 3, it would make the 3 pt shot tougher to shoot and easier to guard, and change things up a bit from the chucking we see now.
MTV was way ahead of you...30 years ago. Remember Rock N' Jock Basketball, when they had circles around the 3pt line that were worth more (e.g., 10 points)?

Of course, they eventually added 25-foot high rims that were worth 25-points. This led to Gary Payton scoring 151 points in a game...

The problem is that analytics has created a situation where everybody is playing the same way, and the teams have no personality any more. The players change but the playstyle is the same, it doesn't matter who's on the floor, there are no anticipated matchups, where people look forward to a contrast of styles.
Also there are too many games, and with the play-in, 20 teams make the playoffs, so the regular season feels like an exhibition season where there are no stakes in the games.
Not everyone is playing the same way, though. Have you watched what OKC and Memphis are doing lately? They are going in very different directions with they ways they approach offense, setting ball screens (OKC uses its guards rather than bigs) or even abandoning ball screens altogether (Memphis). I see a lot of posts in this thread that also include statements like "I haven't watched much of the NBA lately" and yeah, it shows.

Take a look at this to get a sense of what I am saying.

Well, I haven't watched because of the 2nd part of my complaint, I haven't watched a regular season NBA game in more than 10 years.

At least you are owning up to the fact that you have no basis for your assessment of the league these days. I suppose I got the response I had hoped in a way.

Whether you think my assessment is correct or not is irrelevant, my perception is driving mine and many other peoples' lack of interest. Your snarky response has in no way changed my perception or my interest.

If someone came to you and said "I hate the movies of James Gunn. Haven't watched one of his films since the first Guardians of the Galaxy. His latest work is so derivative and full of fan service. I won't be seeing that new Superman, either," would you take their opinion seriously? All I see is that you formed an opinion a long time ago and haven't bothered to adjust your priors. Sorry for calling you out on that.

If James Gunn directed movies have had declining box offices for several iterations, then whoever is funding his next movie hearing someone say that should certainly be paying attention

To further cement where you are on this, NBA team and league revenue is at an all-time high. You are also missing the point. The revenue of the film has little to do with the quality of the movie. Whatever point you were trying to make is lost on me.

the old guard of stars is washed, and the NBA has completely failed to market the next generation.
The best player in the NBA is Jokic who 1) has a not traditionally marketable personality, and 2) plays in a non-glamour market. The most marketable young star in the league is Ant, but he has problem #2 above. SGA in a similar spot. The only guy who is arguably a "young star" for one of the five teams in the league's three biggest markets is, who, Brunson? KAT?

What the NBA needs is a young player, preferably a guard or wing, preferably American, with a big telegenic personality, who plays in a large market, to become a top 5 player in the league. That's right, it's up to Jared McCain to save basketball.

He has.
  • Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3: (2023) $845.46 million
  • Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2: (2016) $869.08 million
  • Guardians of the Galaxy: (2014) $770.88 million
  • The Suicide Squad: (2021) $167.09 million
The guys that gave him the money for the last one (Warner) let him do Superman next.

Stop moving the goal post, the discussion is about declining ratings and public interest. A lot of revenue is based on fixed TV contracts which is based on ratings of the past.

is this on Jokic's personality? Or a total failure of the NBA marketing people to figure out how to market him? Good marketing people ought to be able to get me excited about a pet rock.

Are you being tongue in cheek? Seems like an odd order for that list, no?

Interesting discussion. One thing I don’t buy is the “it’s too hard to watch/find the NBA”
due to streaming etc. With just a basic package either via cable or satellite you will have NBA games on almost every day of the week via traditional network, ESPN, TNT, TBS, and/or NBA TV.

Problem is not "can I watch an NBA game tonight?" The issue is "can I watch the NBA team's game I want to watch tonight?" You often have to have a package that includes both the traditional bundles and then a specific team's channel. Very few of the games for the Bulls, Magic, etc. are going to be found on ESPN, TNT, TBS, etc. I can either buy the NBA package in addition to YouTubeTV or pony up for a specific regional network as a one-off. It is beyond annoying.

Isn’t the same true in football though? If I want to watch the Dolphins every week then yeah I have to buy YouTube tv to get the complete NFL package. Or else you just get “what’s on.”

To a degree, I think that's right. But there are a lot more national games for each of the NFL teams. The Dolphins will probably appear on Sunday Night, Monday Night, and Thursday Night football at least once each season and then get a nationally-televised game at 4:30 p.m. ET once or twice, too. As many as 1/3rd of their games will be viewable for a huge portion of the audience with a basic streaming bundle. For a small-market NBA team or one the NBA doesn't want to feature, I might be able to see less than a fifth of their regular season games.
