Movies/TV worth watching (or at least discussing)

The obvious answer is Breaking Bad and then Better Call Saul if you like BB.
Yeah I’ve seen BB back when it first came out, I can respect how well it was written but I just don’t care for the story at all. Not really something I find interesting but man that writing and character dialogue was amazing.

Echo the recommendation for The Americans and tossing one in for Justified.

I’ll add Justified to the list, I wanna say I saw a couple of episodes back when it first aired but quit watching tv around that time maybe. Seems like I remember it being pretty good.

Wow, hot take but I think I disagree with everything you said except adolescence which I haven’t watched.

I’ll echo to watch Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul - those are top 5 shows.

The Americans is also great.

And for something new, check out Paradise.
I’ll definitely add Paradise (Never heard of it!). I don’t honestly have any interest in Better Call Saul as I didn’t find BB interesting (But definitely well written).

I saw someone also mentioned GoT but I watched it too. As a book reader I thought the show was great seasons 1-3 but after that was kind of rough and the final season was abysmal. I enjoyed the ride though.

The final season of the wire was rough. A few of the seasons were the best, most thoughtful television I’ve ever seen.

I agree the sopranos was a bit formulaic but it was so ducking engrossing the first time I saw it and some of the acting between James and Edie was just incredible. Easily top 5.

GOT up to a point. You don’t get TV like that. Brought the entire world together. The reaction videos throughout were so great.

The first season of true detective was a blast. The 4th or 5th episode of S1 was the most stressed out I’ve been watching TV ever perhaps.

It’s so tough. What are the rating criteria? I grew up in the golden era of the Simpsons and it paved the way for all sorts of animation yo follow.

Absolutely agree with everything you said, I haven’t heard of Tru Detective so I’ll add that to the list too.

I wasn’t allowed to watch the Simpsons growing up and once I got older I didn’t care to watch it anymore but I did enjoy Family Guy. I do still love animation shows as well as movies and think they are my favorite form of tv overall. Basically anything by Studio Ghibli is masterful and if you haven’t watched Grave of the Fireflies… well take some antidepressants and grab a box of tissues because that might be the saddest thing ever made.

So I made a bit of a job change and I work at night now. This means I now have A LOT more time for shows and movies.

Over the past ~month I’ve watched (and completed) the following but would like recommendations for more must sees.

- The Wire (probably a top 5 show ever imo)

- The Sopranos (Liked it, thought it was a bit formulaic for a bit but the ending was great)

- Adolescence (Best acting I’ve seen in years)

- Severance (Very underwhelming, I see now why most people I know dropped it, I doubt I’ll continue as well)

- The Last of Us (Best game to show series ever but just okay as far as cinema goes)

- White Lotus (This is close to my top 5 I think but I’d need to sit down and truly think about it, absolutely brilliant)

I just started The Boys and it’s good so far (nearly done with S1), next I’m going to start one of Mad Men, Twin Peaks, or The Americans

I think if I had to answer right now off the top I’d say my favorite shows ever would be: Dark, The Wire, Succession, and Chernobyl. What shows do yall think I need to add under my belt?
The Americans. My favorite show ever.

In a similar vein to GoT, the first season of Westworld is great but it tails ago after that.

It was mentioned up thread, but Andor is great also - even if you aren’t into Star Wars.

My other recommendation is This Is Us, but you’ll also have to get out the tissues for that one. Paradise is by the same creator as This Is Us so there are a lot of similarities in how the stories are told even though the plots have absolutely nothing to do with each other.

Then maybe just skip to Better Call Saul (you don't need Breaking Bad to understand what is happening on the show, though there is some stuff in the later seasons that is enhanced by knowing the Breaking Bad story). It is just sorta unfathomable to me that someone could not like these two shows. Absolute peak TV!

If you can get past the icky Kevin Spacey factor then the first few seasons of House of Cards are excellent.

Comedy much? The Good Place and Fleabag are just great and not too many seasons/episodes to binge.

Do you do Stranger Things? Squid Game?

If you like The Boys then you should watch Gen V (it's a spin-off).

Lots of amazing suggestions that precede my post, but I'll add Shameless (until Fiona leaves the show Season 9).

Are we giving great TV suggestions regardless of when aired/streamed? I did not see Firefly and Fringe listed in the last page or so, but both are very high on my list.

Fringe is a tough one. Season 1 was good. Seasons 2 and 3 were amazing. Season 4 and 5 struggled at times and I feel like it did not end in a very satisfactory way. But in the middle there, the show was awesome!

Mad Men is tremendous. I think that, along with Breaking Bad, should be at the top of your list. Game of Thrones is also awesome. All 3 of those shows are excellent and completely different from each other.

Proof that different strokes make the world go round. Fringe is up there with my favorite shows of all time. I found House of Cards silly and unwatchable and had no interest in Breaking Bad.

House of Cards was great until a certain subway incident. 😱😡

Pixar remains in a slump. Elio is fine, but nowhere close to a return to form for what once was such a reliable studio. It needed more genuine emotion and a less obvious plot. Here is my 100-word review: https://flixchat.blogspot.com/2025/06/jason-evans-100-word-reviews-elio.html

I just saw Elio with my family. I'm afraid I have to agree with pretty much every word of Jason's review. Nobody is going to remember this one. Even the music is insipid. This wasn't the kids movie to go for in our "Top 5" contest, that's for sure. (Bummer for me.)
