Movies/TV worth watching (or at least discussing)

From your mouth to David Zaslav's ears.

Well….HBO Max is back. Such an idiotic decision to remove HBO from the name.

I want to yell at branding people. They can be brilliant but most I’ve encountered ate so stupid it hurts. Their business model is pitching something different, no matter what.

Returning the HBO brand into HBO Max will further drive the service forward and amplify the uniqueness that subscribers can expect from the offering,” a press release claimed, adding the reversal was “also a testament to WBD’s willingness to keep boldly iterating its strategy and approach”

And now it makes sense.

This seems to undo the Discovery/WB merger into Discovery just buying the cable properties. I'm putting the over/under before we get a new streamer called Discovery+ at 18 months.

Every Knicks game on TNT they showed Zaslav in the crowd when they did the traditional celebrity row shots. Then yesterday on TNT at the French Open (when the celebrities were largely the same ones who go to Knicks games), they showed him again. Talk about sucking up to the boss. No one cares about David Zaslav in the same context as Spike Lee, Dustin Hoffman, Natalie Portman, etc.

along these lines, I saw Jon Hamm trying to enjoy himself at Yankee Stadium with friends last night as middle aged idiots interrupted him to take selfies. Have these people no shame? Why people feel compelled to request selfies and autographs from celebs is just beyond me, can't they just retain the experience in their cubic heads? Would they want to be interrupted while having dinner or having an event? Sheesh.

Well, Discovery+ already exists...so maybe Discovery++

100% agree.

I was genuinely surprised by how much I enjoyed Materialists. Celine Song is a brilliant writer/director and she truly elevates what would have been a predictable romcom in the hands of most other directors. Instead, we get one of the better "date night" movies in recent years.

This, and Spinal Tap 2.

I am sure they will both be awful. I don’t care. Hopefully not Godfather 3 bad or Blues Brothers 2000 bad. But — not good.
Not to be macabre but I'm hoping Mel makes it beyond the premiere. That's a 99 year old man there. Speaking of comedies, new Naked Gun Trailer dropped. Hollywood is getting pretty close to nostalgia mining everything from my youth. They are going to have a problem when it's completely exhausted.

One brief NSFW moment.

Have they remade Goonies or Poltergeist yet?
Poltergeist - Yes, years ago hoping to reboot as a new franchise. It’s not terrible but forgetful.

Goonies - In development. WB hired a writer and Steven et al are on as producers.

Told you it’s only a matter of time before they mine it all. They are going to get to Krull eventually as they take the dregs.

I loved that video game! Used to line up the quarters and play it forever. You could get points by being close to the boulders on the first level without letting them hit you and I would just collect a ton of points that way to set the high score. It took time and was sorta mindless but that was 1980s video games.

The movie was beyond trash (but you can spot a pair of nobodies names Liam Neeson and Robbie Coltrane in the trailer).

So I made a bit of a job change and I work at night now. This means I now have A LOT more time for shows and movies.

Over the past ~month I’ve watched (and completed) the following but would like recommendations for more must sees.

- The Wire (probably a top 5 show ever imo)

- The Sopranos (Liked it, thought it was a bit formulaic for a bit but the ending was great)

- Adolescence (Best acting I’ve seen in years)

- Severance (Very underwhelming, I see now why most people I know dropped it, I doubt I’ll continue as well)

- The Last of Us (Best game to show series ever but just okay as far as cinema goes)

- White Lotus (This is close to my top 5 I think but I’d need to sit down and truly think about it, absolutely brilliant)

I just started The Boys and it’s good so far (nearly done with S1), next I’m going to start one of Mad Men, Twin Peaks, or The Americans

I think if I had to answer right now off the top I’d say my favorite shows ever would be: Dark, The Wire, Succession, and Chernobyl. What shows do yall think I need to add under my belt?

The obvious answer is Breaking Bad and then Better Call Saul if you like BB.

The final season of the wire was rough. A few of the seasons were the best, most thoughtful television I’ve ever seen.

I agree the sopranos was a bit formulaic but it was so ducking engrossing the first time I saw it and some of the acting between James and Edie was just incredible. Easily top 5.

GOT up to a point. You don’t get TV like that. Brought the entire world together. The reaction videos throughout were so great.

The first season of true detective was a blast. The 4th or 5th episode of S1 was the most stressed out I’ve been watching TV ever perhaps.

It’s so tough. What are the rating criteria? I grew up in the golden era of the Simpsons and it paved the way for all sorts of animation yo follow.

Wow, hot take but I think I disagree with everything you said except adolescence which I haven’t watched.

I’ll echo to watch Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul - those are top 5 shows.

The Americans is also great.

And for something new, check out Paradise.
