MBB: The 2025 Transfer Portal

Are we saying that spending $2+ million to buy Arizona's 3rd string center might not be a good investment?!?!

I'm dying to know what they spent to bring in Jadon Young, a guy who averaged 8ppg while hitting less than 30% of his 3s (with a high usage rate) for a really bad ACC team.

IC is reporting that Carolina has spent $14 million on their roster for the 25-26 season.

The Field of 68's morning newsletter was dumbfounded at this number. They are very underwhelmed with the Carolina roster.
"The Tar Heels brought in five respectable additions but none that Rob Dauster thought were UNC-caliber players:"

I could see Dauster saying "high claiber" or "elite", but what the hell is "UNC-Caliber"? A guy who's not quite good enough for the NBA but great for 6 years of college?

As much as I, too, am enjoying how unkind this media cycle is being to UNC, I worry that if we gloat too much during the offseason we're just begging for these posts to be thrown back in our faces in the (very unlikely!) event that it's a weird season...

However, our comments on this board tend to be more critical of roster additions. If Jon does make mistakes or misses I expect us to be skeptical of the talent level and amount of money spent.

Only if we have any clue how much money is spent. It's all mystery, assumption, and conjecture at this point.

I don't think it's a BAD roster. It's bad for the money they spent. It's a ~ Top 25 team that could win a game or two in the tournament.

Just terrible value.

Well, that is sorta Rob Dauster's point. This is Carolina we are talking about... one of the bluest of the blue bloods. This is a team that annually expects to be in the top 10 and national title conversation (the way Duke, Kentucky, and Kansas are). Sure, this is a fine roster for a middle tier power conference team... but UNC expects to be more and $14 million is supposed to buy you more.

If Carolina has one of the ten highest payrolls (and $14 mil probably puts them firmly in there) then they need to have more than a "not quite ranked" roster.

Dear parents

I skipped my high school classes today to work on my jump shot. Don’t worry. All I need to do is take the GED and if my jump shot is good enough I’ll make millions in NIL money.

Your high school athlete
Not sure UNCheat sports require a GED these days.

I mean…we can’t say if $14 million should buy more talent without more information about how much other schools are spending on talent. Or any information, really.

Jason opined that $14mm puts them in the top ten in terms of roster building expenditure. I think it’s fair to say that if they are spending in the top ten, but not performing near the top ten, it’s cause for concern (or jubilation, if you’re a rival fanbase).

Don't worry, now that Hubes has hired a GM, he can focus solely on coaching and all will be well.

Yes, but we don’t have enough information to do more than speculate and opine. It’s not like we have a detailed list of team payrolls to work with.

Fair. Though what do we have, if not speculating and opining? 😜

If it’s all speculation, we need to shift the narrative. No way $14 Mil is enough to field a competitive roster! If this team even sniffs the tournament bubble, it will be on the back of Hubert’s coaching alone and worthy of a lifetime contract. Any failures this season should definitely not be pinned on the head coach. How can he be expected to compete with such resources?
