MBB: The 2025 Transfer Portal

In some ways the Lubin transfer is wild, on its face anyway, but this is his 4 school in 4 years, so not really shocking, the players will do whatever they think is best for them. Could we see a UNC/Duke transfer some time? Probably, especially if UNC has a player that actually wants to get drafted in the NBA.

Doubt it would work, since the academic credits would be a big issue.

Not sure what to make of this: Dushawn London of 247 Sports posted the following yesterday.

The NC Sports Network keeps a similar (though not as good) transfer list, and last week it mentioned that Ty-Laur Johnson is transferring to San Diego. Curious, I looked into it, and I found this San Diego Union-Tribune article.

Head coach Steve Lavin, now entering his fourth season of a six-year contract, is on the same page. The Toreros are undergoing a massive roster overhaul which has already involved an influx of transfer talent including wing Adrian McIntyre (Westmont), shooting guard Toneari Lane (Georgia State), wing Dominique Ford (Southern Utah) and, most notably, former four-star recruit Ty Laur-Johnson (Wake Forest), a point guard.

In this news report from the local ABC affiliate, which aired the same day as the article, Coach Lavin said this about the school's new $35 million practice facility: "It is a game changer. We've already seen the last 10 days in our recruiting. We've had 12 official visits from prospects and their families, and most of them are Power Four conference prospects, Arizona, Wake Forest, schools at that level."

Not exactly a confirmation. It's possible that the newspaper reporter misinterpreted a visit as a commitment, but it's still weird. The other 3 guys mentioned in that paragraph are listed as part of San Diego's next roster in the 2025-2026 Scholarship Tracker, but no Ty-Laur Johnson.

I'm thinking I'll just change it to "Ty-Laur Johnson (to San Diego?)" and check for updates periodically.

I can get rid of the question mark. Matt Zenitz and Chris Hummer of 247 Sports (the football beat) are reporting that Ty-Laur Johnson has signed with Steve Lavin and San Diego -- the one in the West Coast Conference.

Here are the ins and outs of the ACC so far. If anyone copies this list to another website (hint hint, Syracusefan.com board), please provide credit and a link to DBR.

I'm struck by the contrast between Duke's experience in the "portal" this year versus last year. Last year, three high impact players who were upgrades over the personnel they replaced, this year ended up with 2 practice players after the one significant commit decided to stay in the NBA draft. Did the staff not want anything from transfers this session? Or did they swing and miss a lot?

Well, they landed one potential impact transfer… but he blew up and committed to the draft.

No evidence we missed on anyone other than Coward - and he was quickly replaced with Sarr. Last year we only had two rotation-quality returnees. This year we have five. There's your difference.

I don’t know that you can say the 3 incoming transfers were clear upgrades over the 7 guys Duke lost to the portal. It’s easy to say in hindsight. But per 247’s transfer ratings, Roach and Mitchell were rated more highly than any of the incoming guys.

But, you’re right to call out the 3 guys replacing guys Duke lost. That’s literally the difference. Duke lost no guys to the portal this year. They tried for one guy and it didn’t work out. The fact that they pivoted to a high school recruit suggests that they weren’t casting a wide net in the portal, so I don’t think it’s a matter of a lot of swings and misses.

Either way, there’s undeniably a big bet being placed on the returning players. That feels (to me) like the key difference from last year.

Last year Duke lost one player to graduation, two to the NBA Draft and seven to the transfer portal. This year Duke lost two players to graduation, four to the draft and only one player to the portal, a practice player. It’s just numbers.

Seems like Scheyer is taking a bet on continuity and growth this year, counting on the freshmen to make a year 2 leap rather than replace them with plug and play transfers. I am agnostic on which approach is the safer bet for building an elite team (24-25 Kansas should loom large for anyone bemoaning a lack of activity in the portal), but as a fan I love that we are seeing guys Duke recruited have a chance to grow season-to-season in a Duke uniform.

For what it's worth, though, Scheyer did see a hole in his roster that wasn't filled by the returnees or incoming freshmen that he initially filled with a transfer, Cedric Coward. When Coward proved too good to stick around, Scheyer pivoted to an international recruit who should play the same role. All of this demonstrates a pragmatism and flexibility that I like. CJS isn't a "build through the portal" guy, he's a "build the best roster you can using all the tools at your disposal" guy.

Dukie Tiger: Didn't we tell the 2024 transfers that, while they were welcome to stay, their roles would be less than they wished? I.e, "bye." I.e., we had upgrades at each one's position. Roach was a bit of an outlier here, but I don't think he played the way Jon wanted.

I think this is mostly correct. Almost certainly so in the cases of Stewart and Power, who were replaced by Gillis and Brown. Those appear to have been clear cases of "thanks, but no thanks, we'll take the transfer." Then with Mitchell, it was a tradeoff of length for ballhandling, shooting, and playmaking with Sion James. So for those 3 guys, I agree that the tradeoff was very much a "we have these guys who are better options".

In Roach's case, I agree that it doesn't fit in the "we have a better guy coming in" like the previous 3. But I think it may have been a bit more complicated than "Roach didn't play the way Scheyer wanted." I think it was probably that Scheyer wanted more height/length than Roach could provide, in order to be more switchable defensively. Conversely, Roach wanted to have a chance to play as the primary PG, and that wasn't going to happen at Duke in 2024-25. So it was sort of a mutual understanding that "we loved what you gave us for 4 years, but it's probably mutually not the best option next year."

But yeah, I think it's pretty fair to say that, like for like, we got upgrades.

As for the other 3 transfers, I'd say pretty comfortably that Knueppel was an upgrade over Blakes, Ngongba was pretty comfortably an upgrade over Reeves, and that Evans was an upgrade over Schutt.

IC is reporting that Carolina has spent $14 million on their roster for the 25-26 season.
Multiple sources have confirmed that UNC has surpassed the $14 million mark in its financial commitment to the 2025-26 roster, approximately triple what was spent on the roster a year ago. Men’s basketball executive director and general manager Jim Tanner’s $850,000 salary represents another bullet point in confirming the university’s support of its prized program.
The Field of 68's morning newsletter was dumbfounded at this number. They are very underwhelmed with the Carolina roster.
The Tar Heels brought in five respectable additions but none that Rob Dauster thought were UNC-caliber players:
  • Big man Henri Veesaar (Arizona)
  • Guard Jaydon Young (Virginia Tech)
  • Forward Jarin Stevenson (Alabama)
  • Guard Jonathan Powell (West Virginia)
  • Guard Kyan Evans (Colorado State)
Returning for UNC will be guard Seth Trimble and big man James Brown, along with bench players Russell Hawkins, Dante Mayo Jr. and John Holbrook. The freshman additions include international prospect Luka Bogavac, 5-star forward Caleb Wilson and 4-star guards Derek Dixon and Isaiah Denis. This roster isn’t necessarily screaming a team capable of cutting down nets.

Well… what if I told you that roster is worth $14 million?

With the roster at 14 players, it’s hard to imagine any other pieces getting added to the puzzle. We’ll have to wait and see if UNC’s big spending was worth it. Because right now, it seems like a bit much for a fringe top-25 roster.

14 million dollars for a roster that might have one player compete for 1st team All-ACC?

That's crazy.
Dear parents

I skipped my high school classes today to work on my jump shot. Don’t worry. All I need to do is take the GED and if my jump shot is good enough I’ll make millions in NIL money.
