MBB: The 2025 Transfer Portal

ESPN has an Adriatic League player, Joan Beringer, mocked to go #15.

A quick Google search surfaced DJ Stewart Jr, a 6'5 guard who scored 16ppg at Miss St as a sophomore and now averages 12ppg in the Adriatic League.

Luka Bogavac may not be an NBA prospect but if he's averaging 15ppg and shooting 40% from 3, as a 22 year-old coming into UNC, that's a guy I think will help them. They have a huge hole on the wing right now. This guy would start.
He is 18 (Beringer). By 22 if you are not in upper leagues like NBA or Euroleague you are usually not top tier. Just sharing my experience, but there are always exceptions.

Interesting note here too. Apparently he won't have 4 years of eligibility. 2-3 years depending on how the NCAA rules. I didn't realize it was still a functioning body...
If he is 22 years old AND he does play for four years, will he surpass Armando Bacon as the oldest person ever to play varsity basketball at UNC.

Had to do some googling to remember the guy's name but I think Stillman White holds that title as he did a two year Mormon mission. Or Cormac Ryan who was in college for six years and did an extra year of HS so was almost 26 when he finished at UNC. But you are correct that he would also likely pass White/Ryan for this esteemed honor.

Come on now. You can't announce that without the appropriate graphic! Especially for the illiterate strictly visual learners among UNC fans.

I was hoping that Ven-Allen Lubin had posted a real image of him in his new uniform, but the Tipton Edit will have to do.

I can’t wait to hear from him given how out of his way he went to say he was returning to UNC after entering the portal. Just such a horrible look for both sides. All he had to do was enter the portal like everyone else, and if he returned (a la Trimble) no one would bat an eye. Now… it’s DRAMA.

Over on IC they are acting like it's not a big loss. I think they are in denial. It's not a lot different than if we lost Maliq Brown. They do have James Brown and Zayden High to fill in, but those guys are a big step back from a 4th year Lubin.

I like that Jon seems to be treating our center position like the running back position in football. It's best to have two good ones.

Actually thought their frontcourt was going to be very solid next year....now....nope.

I looked at what UNC is bringing in next year. Since we don't seem to have a UNC recruiting thread I'll mention the transfers and the freshmen here. UNC seems to have prioritized size and volume this year. All heights are reported heights of course and most likely represent 1-2 inches for shoes (well, you don't play barefoot.) and 1-2 inches for good luck/growth/what have you.
Transfers:
Jaydon Young 6-4 from VT 22.3 mpg 8.1 pts 1.7 r 1.4 a 34.7% shooting 29.6% from 3
Jarin Stevenson 6-11 from Alabama 18.7 mpg 5.4 pts 3.4 r 42.9% 30.7% from 3
Jonathan Powell 6-6 from WVA 30.1 mpg 8.3 pt 3.1 r 0.7 assists (so not a point guard I guess)
Henri Veesaar 7-0 from Arizona 20.8 mpg 9.4 pts 5.0 r 1.3 a 59.2% shooting 35.2% from 3
Kyan Evans 6-1 (or 6-2 depending on source) from Colorado State 28.6 mpg 10.6 pts 2.9 r 3.1 a 47.1% shooting with 44.6%! from 3.

They all reek of solid career back-ups although those certainly can be useful. If Evans can hit that kind of 3 percentage in ACC competition he could find a significant amount of playing time.

Is it just me, or are players just transferring on a whim these days? I see that roughly over 2700 players entered the "portal" this year. This past year an NCAA Division 1 team could offer 13 full scholarships (no partials for this past year) and there are 364 such teams, meaning about 4732 total scholarship players. 2700 of that is 57%! I find it hard to believe that that many players were so discontented, or could reasonably hope to significantly improve their playing time or paycheck by moving.

The newbies:
Caleb Wilson 6-9 5 star top ten in US rated PF
Isaiah Denis, Derek Dixon two 4 star 6-3 guards in the 50-60 range
Luke Bogavac 6-5 200 "point guard" with extensive European pro experience although not in the topmost leagues. 14.9 pts 3.6 r and why I put PG in parenthesis 2.3 a per game. shoots 45.1% and 39.9% from three.

Of course they have some people back (but not Lubin!) but there's only so much brain space I can devote to UNC. It looks like to me that they have a lot of pieces to put together and a lot of roles to figure out. Will Wilson be given the traditional UNC treatment and underperform? How quick is Bogavac? Will Evan be a shooter of note in the ACC? Despite what Inside Cryolina thinks, H. Davis and staff are very competent coaches. I'm sure they are aware that they have their work cut out for them to produce a coherent team from all these parts. It will be interesting to see what they come up with, and how long it takes them.
