Jon Scheyer and the Duke Blue Devils, ranked #6 in the AP preseason poll, invite Johnny Dawkins and the UCF Knights for the second edition of the Brotherhood Run, a preseason exhibition in Cameron Indoor Stadium on Tuesday, October 21 at 7pm ET. If you're not attending the game, you can watch it on ACCNX (streaming link, listen, live stats). You should have access to ACCNX if your TV provider carries the ACC Network.

About a month ago, I wrote a little bit about UCF in post #20 of the MBB 2025-26: Big XII/Big 12 Teams thread. Coach Dawkins is starting his 10th year in Orlando, and he's under contract through the 2026-27 season. Aside from an 11-12 record in that weird and shortened 2020-21 COVID year, he's been over .500 every season. The Knights upgraded from the American to the Big 12 in 2023, and while they've stayed afloat with 17-16 and 20-17 records in those two seasons, they've gone 7-11 and 7-13 in conference play.

Coach Dawkins spoke to the local media earlier this week. Here's the video.

I've broken down their roster below. I focus on minutes per game because it is, low-key, the best basic statistic to give us a sense of a player's prior usage.

Last year of eligibility

5-11 guard Poohpha Warakulnukroh #33 (1.0 mpg for UCF in 2024-25)

6-4 guard George Beale Jr #3 (24.4 mpg at Hampton)
6-6 forward Devan Cambridge #5 (17.7 mpg at Texas Tech)
5-11 guard Arturo Dean #?? (24.4 mpg at Oklahoma State)
6-2 guard Themus Fulks #1 (34.2 mpg at Milwaukee)
6-5 guard Riley Kugel #2 (22.4 mpg at Mississippi State)
6-8 forward Jamichael Stillwell #4 (28.0 mpg at Milwaukee)

2 years of eligibility

6-9 forward Jordan Burks #99 (18.6 mpg at Georgetown)
6-11 center Jeremy Foumena #0 (2.9 mpg at Mississippi State)
7-0 center Elijah Hulsewe #9 (redshirted 2024-25; 13.2 mpg at Bethune-Cookman 2023-24)
6-5 guard Chris Johnson #22 (17.0 mpg at Stephen F. Austin)
6-5 guard Carmelo Pacheco #11 (28.2 mpg at Mount St. Mary's)

3 years of eligibility

7-2 center John Bol #7 (4.1 mpg at Ole Miss)
6-9 guard Kris Parker #5 (10.0 mpg at Villanova)

4 years of eligibility

6-6 guard Zach Johnson #24 (unranked; USA)
6-4 guard Tanner Jones #30 (unranked; USA)

I have a few notes to add. Redshirt senior guard and deep bench player Poohpha Warakulnukroh (who's from Thailand and attended Montverde Academy) is the only returner on this team. Everyone else is new.

There was a roster of 15, but just a couple of weeks ago -- October surprise? -- they added a 16th player, 5-11 senior guard Arturo Dean. He led the Big 12 in steals at Oklahoma State last season, and led the nation in that category when he played at Florida International as a sophomore in 2023-24. (I know that Jai Lucas and Miami pursued him in the transfer portal a few months ago, but nothing came from it.) He's not listed on the roster yet, and I don't even know his jersey number.

Devan Cambridge is in his 7th year of college basketball, beginning as an Auburn freshman in the fall of 2019. To put that in perspective, he arrived on campus at the same time as Tigers teammate Isaac Okoro, who went one-and-done, was drafted by the Cleveland Cavaliers with the #5 pick in 2020, and has played 334 NBA games over 5 seasons. Anyway, Cambridge played three mostly healthy seasons for former coach Bruce Pearl and then a fourth full season for Bobby Hurley at Arizona State. It's that fifth season that's causing a delay. He played a total of 14 games in two (redshirt) seasons at Texas Tech. And now he's wrapping things up, presumably. Cambridge will join Themus Fulks and Riley Kugel as the UCF player representatives at Big XII Media Days next Wednesday, which means they'll have already played an exhibition game before meeting the media.

Junior guard Carmelo Pacheco is getting another chance at Duke. He played for Mount St. Mary's last season, but got injured in the final game of the regular season, and was unable to play during their MAAC Tournament run and in their NCAA first round game.

Finally, we have freshman guard Tanner Jones (bio), who happens to be the son of Dahntay Jones, former Blue Devil and current assistant coach with the NBA's Los Angeles Clippers. Coach Dawkins was an associate head coach at Duke during Dahntay's two seasons there (2001-03). Tanner was at IMG Academy before he committed to UCF.

I went with a recent photo, but you can find a few licensed photos of toddler Tanner on the court when his father played for the Denver Nuggets. It's another layer to the Brotherhood Run. Discuss the game here.

Would you please put the link for the game when you get it?

Of course, it's what I do.

I just added the "listen" link for the radio broadcast on The Varsity Network (also here), but ESPN has yet to put up an ACCNX streaming link to watch the game. I'll keep checking Tuesday's upcoming schedule at ESPN Watch daily. Fair warning: they procrastinated quite a bit on adding the ACCNX link for Countdown to Craziness earlier this month.

anyone got any ideas on who they will start? 16 players, fourteen transfers-college basketball today. Lot's of those transfers got decent minutes on decent teams so at the least UCF will be deep and experienced. Could be a real "learning experience" for the younger Dukies.

Interesting question. In the presser video embedded above, Coach Dawkins mentions that the team will have three captains: Devan Cambridge (jersey #5), Themus Fulks (#1), and Jamichael Stillwell (#4). He also talks about Riley Kugel (#2) and Carmelo Pacheco (#11) a bit. But he also talks about departed players and how to replace their leadership.

So there you are. Five possible starters, only slightly better than using a dartboard or a hat to pick names at random.

To make a greater point, Duke may have to get used to not knowing many details about their next three opponents.

UCF: Tuesday's game is their first intersquad anything. They play LSU later in the month.

Tennessee: They had a closed scrimmage scheduled with Ohio State this weekend, but I think the Buckeyes may have cancelled?

Texas: They don't seem to have any preseason action.

Western Carolina: Bingo. They open their season at Cincinnati, to be televised on ESPN+. They play Duke 5 days later.

Sorry, no update as of Sunday afternoon. ESPN has yet to provide an ACCNX link for Tuesday's game.

In the meantime, @blazindw and @JasonEvans preview the UCF exhibition in the second segment of DBR Podcast #760.

"After the break, we get into the basketball. Johnny Dawkins and UCF are coming to town for the Brotherhood Run, and we break down how the Knights could look this season. After breaking down some of the players, we start to discuss what we want to see from Duke as they hit the floor against another team for the first time since April. There are questions around the starting lineup, how the offense will run through Cam Boozer, and how the rotations might look. We’re very excited to see how it will flow on Tuesday night!"

Couple of great names on this UCF squad. Themus Fulks! Is that theme-us or them-us? Both are fantastic.

How do we know for sure that the game will be streamed on ACCNX? ESPN already has a link for the Tenn. game but nothing for the UCF game. Seems odd.

Because Duke announced it would be. I suspect Duke has a good relationship with ESPN and the ACC Network to be aware of what they are doing. If there is no link around mid-afternoon tomorrow, you can begin to worry a little bit.

It is not at all uncommon for a game exclusively on ACCNX to not show up with a link until the day of the contest. The Duke-Tennessee exhibition, which is being broadcast on ESPN2 in a weekend prime-time slot (about as big a showcase as one can imagine for a pre-season game) getting an early link is also not surprising given the high visibility of that game.

Great. Thanks Jason.

No update with fewer than 24 hours to go. The official GoDuke schedule still says the game will be on ACCNX, and ESPN has put forth no ACCNX link.

Some links today to prepare for tomorrow.

1. From Duke MBB: Jon Scheyer hypes up the game.

2. GoDuke now has a preview and PDF game notes. Chris Edwards (East Carolina near-grad; bio) and Debbie Taylor (William and Mary grad; bio) will announce the game on ACCNX. Let's hope Edwards has practiced his pronunciation of "Khamenia" and "Ufochukwu".

Normally, I would save the above information for Game Day, but a different social media post from Duke MBB suggests that there might be some interesting new content available Tuesday morning:

Sounds like a Brotherhood Podcast with Coaches Carrawell and Dawkins. I'll be sure to check YouTube early tomorrow for that video, and embed it here.

Just as I figured: Brotherhood Podcast #65 for Game Day.

“JOHNNY DAWKINS! An absolute honor to have the Duke LEGEND back in Cameron. C-Well caught up with Coach Dawkins ahead of our Brotherhood Run exhibition game against UCF. The 1986 NPOY reminisces on his favorite Duke memories as a player, working for Coach K as an assistant coach and the strength of The Brotherhood. Massive thank you to Johnny for coming through and all he's done for Duke Basketball!!”

It's game day, but the ESPN Watch schedule is showing different programming on ACCNX during the time frame for the exhibition game against UCF -- Nothing But Net Men's Preview at 7:00pm, and Nothing But Net with Hubert Davis at 8:00 pm. Let's hope someone is checking with the folks in Storrs to confirm that the UCF at Duke game is being streamed.

People checking in in Storrs will be sorely disappointed as ESPN is 50 miles away in Bristol.
