MBB: Duke vs. Wake Forest (Saturday 1/25, 4:30pm ET, ESPN) Pregame and In-Game Thread

Looking at Wake's stats, not much leaps off the page except that they are seemingly very good at making other teams shoot poorly. I'm not sure we're far enough into the season to call them a very good defensive team (maybe it is a strength of schedule thing, or a small sample size). But they are top 60 in opponent 3-point and 2-point percentage. But the only minutes of their action I have seen all year were the last 8 minutes or so of the North Carolina game. And that was just a rock fight.

This game seems to me to be about 90% likely for a Duke win.

What are the betting and analytical sites saying?

Why does it turn to memories? Because we have a rich history that is a joy to recall and share. Many (most) on the board never experienced double post of Tyson & Buckley, the grace of Mullins flying down the court, the rebounding of Lewis and Giminski, the shooting touch of Armstrong, the grit if Dennard, the strength and athleticism of Gene Banks - just to name a few. With that, I didn't touch the early K years. I, for one, cherish those moments experienced with friends and family and to also experience the memories of others enriches my life and is a prime reason to participate on the board. Live long enough and you will understand and appreciate. Semper Fi
To be clear, I have no problems with reminiscing, but would love for those posts to be in the Memory Lane thread, rather than a game thread.

Since fouls had such an impact in the Tuesday game with the Cheats, anyone know where the ACC referee assignments are posted and how soon before game time that is available? Thanks.

I think I read somewhere that BJ McKie, Matt Woodley, and Jason Shay will be ref'ing the game.

I'm not worried about the whistle at all.

If I knew and gambled, I could make a lot of $$$ or open a pie shop. The only school that announces them in advance is FSU. Someone knew a few hours early that Groover was doing the BC game so that information is somewhere. Otherwise, you are stuck with someone texting you from the stadium.

The 2nd-ranked Blue Devils got a victory in Boston and have nearly a week to rest and prepare for an early bird special game on Saturday in Winston-Salem against the Wake Forest Demon Deacons, airing on ESPN (streaming link, listen, live stats).

The live stats link will go active about 30 minutes before the game, and the Notes/Docs tab will list the officials.

As soon as it’s available, I post the info in DBR Chat, and let you know what Duke’s win-loss record is this season for each assigned ref.

Honest scheduling question: why Wake on the road two consecutive years? It may be as simple as it's too difficult with the conference this big to ensure alternating home and away for every single matchup, but with so many on this board plugged into exactly how and why the ACC does things, I'm curious if there's something more to it than that or not. Thanks!

NFL does similar weird things when you look at consecutive year schedules sometimes. They usually make more sense in the big picture. If you look at the longer term, it's almost certainly very close to 50/50.

There's lots of non-sports factors that may affect the availability of arenas, campuses, and students.

A bit of context regarding the 79 team. Yes with everyone back we didn’t dominate, but did tie the Cheats for regular season title.

Dennard then famously breaks his leg prior to the NCAA and Bender get’s appendicitis prior to ACC championship game. So we are down 2 starters for St, Johns game, Gminski spends half that game tossing his cookies and we lose 78-80, Of course we were not deep and as you noted, our D simply was not good. But if healthy, I’ve always believed we still had a final 4 appearance in us.
Yes, we were really down 3 starters against St. Johns, as sick as G-Man was.

While the previous discussion of the OG Board raised question as to the class and intellect of Wake Forest supporters, I think this should remove any doubt:

4 pages and going strong….and yes, it stays exclusively on topic.

Not sure I understand the comment. We play Wake twice this year, once in Durham on March 3.

This was answered up-thread but I'll repeat it again here.

Every ACC member has two permanent partners and one rotating partner each season. Partners play each other both at home and on the road during the season. For Duke, the two permanent partners are UNC and Wake. For the 2024-25 season, Miami is the rotating partner. Duke will have home-and-home games with UNC, Wake, and some other team next season. Every other ACC teams plays either a road or home game.

Prior to the current scheduling format, Duke's permanent partners were also UNC and Wake (UNC's partners were Duke and NC State, for example). Prior to expanding beyond a 9-team format, Duke played Wake home-and-home every season. Duke and Wake have been playing twice or more each season for many decades.
