MBB: Duke vs. Boston College (Sat 1/18, 8pm ET, ESPN) Pregame and In-Game Thread

I’m concerned that in the same way that the posters of this board are totally ignoring this game (multiple posts on every thread except this today), the players might come in overconfident looking past them as well. Every team we play, even Miami, is filled with division one level scholarship basketball players. Anybody can beat anybody on any given night, and we better not wankerin’ blow this one. As others have pointed out, we don’t have a lot of potential “good wins” ahead of us in the schedule but we have a lot of potential bad losses. I’m confident the team will come out focused, especially Coop as BC is near-ish Maine, but I have some concerns and can’t wait ‘till this one’s done with a big fat W in our win-loss column
Go Duke! 9F!

I haven't seen our team play anything less than great defense in first halves all season. Yes, we can lose our focus a bit in the 2H with a big lead like we maybe did against ND.

It's this consistent defense that gives me confidence that we won't be surprised by any of these mediocre to bad ACC teams this year. I'd love to beat them by 20+ and hold that #1 KP spot over Auburn for the week.

As the person who started this thread, wrote a game preview, added links for game day, and mentioned the bit about Donald Hand Sr and Jr winning ACC Player of the Week, I said everything I could about this Boston College team. I try to be positive and respectful of opponents, and I remember enough about that year that BC went out of their mind shooting threes on their home floor and stole a victory. But I'm out of relevant content*; I hope the players can stay focused more than I can.

If you were to put me in the broadcast booth tonight, and this game provides no unexpected closeness, I would be silent after about 5 minutes. So while many of you will be annoyed with how Dave O'Brien and Cory Alexander occupy the time, and I myself would prefer at least 10 percent less talking, I retain the right to have some appreciation for what they may have to do.

Most of this thread's content is tangential and musical: a lot about the Eagles (the band), and a little bit of Patty Smyth. So all I can do now is wrap this up. What if there were a song, maybe a duet, between Patty Smyth and, say, Don Henley, whose title might describe the Arizona Wildcats season?

* Okay, I lied. I have one more piece of information about tonight's game. The officials are Ron Groover, Mark Schnur, and Adam Fiore. So far this Duke squad is 2-1 in Groover games (Kentucky, Auburn, SMU). Schnur and Fiore have yet to work a Duke game this season.

There's a limit to what officials can do even when their style clashes with Duke's. It means nothing, but Duke does not play well on 1/18. (12-11 overall, 2-5 on the road, 3 game losing streak.)

Can we address our tip-off issues? I dont get it. Tallest team in the country. 7’2” jumping for the tip. Surely we’ve battled and believe he’s the best guy for it. Yet it seems we’ve won about 1 or 2 tip-offs this year…

By “address” I meant discuss in the forums, not telling Jon to do something about it

Eagles making our D look pretty pedestrian. Also, could Earl Grant get FURTHER out on the floor during game action?

Who is chanting “THREE! THREE!” every possession (offense or defense) once the shot clock gets under 10? It has been happening every Duke game, and I can’t fathom the purpose.

Watch the tosses. The refs are never getting it up to 10-11 feet. They are tossing it 9-5 and it's a question of quick hands.

It's the Duke bench, and I believe it's to tell the team there's about 8 seconds left on the shot clock so they can push for the shot clock violation?

1H random thoughts:

That's the most Evans has played in a 1H all year. Two nice defensive plays. A deflected steal for a runout and a hard foul preventing a dunk. Love to see it.

I don't think Khaman has ever faced a big like Venning. Thick and very quick. Maybe needs to back away and force Venning to shoot over him? Gillis doing a better job guarding him. Miss Brown in this one.

On offense we have to continue to drive the ball. They are crowding the 3 pointers. We missed a strange number of layups in the 1H. If we make the easy ones, we are up 12.

Yep, exactly. It's a bit obnoxious to hear but I can see why it's helpful to the D. Wonder whose job that is?

Yes, we stretched the lead when we went small. Definitely miss Brown in this game. Benning and Hastings with 2 each. We’ve got Tyrese, Man Man, and Pat with 2.
