MBB: Duke 88, BC 63 Post-game Thread

Maybe the BC player was constipated, and whoever said that was just being encouraging.
During the Bama-Kentucky game today, Dan Schulman said something about one of the teams feeling “consternation” about a play or something. Bilas responded “well, there’s a pill for that.” Was quick and witty.

Was KK under the weather? Or just a rough, physical game that was not his style?

But Proctor who had very little production in the last 2 games was terrific in this one.

Good to see about this team that when a key player has an off game, someone else steps up.

Perhaps BC game planned their (secondary to Coop) focus on Kon rather than Tyrese.

KK must have been sick. Looked to be playing at 20%. Coaches should have just rested him if that’s the case.

What a great day of college basketball. Tons of good games. Some upsets. A J-Boog game winner in Chapel Hill. Oh, and Duke is the best team in college basketball.

We won and covered, despite a lot of things going badly. Strange game, but loved our fight in the second half. This team will not be pushed around.

My big picture takeaway is how good the small ball lineup looked. Wonder if we see more of it in the coming games.

Earl is a family friend and a good guy. Let's not do character judgments on folks we don't know
Their big guy played well but his body control is bad. I think he kinda meant to clock Cooper but didn't really mean to clock Mason. Greyson's antics didn't make him a horrible person and were no reflection on K. Let's extend the same grace.

Bobby Bowden was by all accounts a good guy -- even a downright lovable fellow -- but he was perfectly content to watch his longtime defensive coordinator, Mickey Andrews, coach some of the dirtiest play in college football for decades; and Bobby himself was unapologetic for the late hits and resulting injuries it caused, joking that his defensive players were trained to hit opponents "to the echo of the whistle."

All this dirty play discussion, except for the fact one of our guys could get hurt...we need to get used to it to learn how to play through it. I have a sneaky suspicion we are gonna seeing the ultimate dirty team coach, Rick Barnes in the tournament. I'll never forget that game a couple of years ago

I believe Jon recruited Mason Gillis for exactly that kind of moment. His toughness was massive tonight.

Mason, Sion and Maliq. These three guys, plus Cooper and Kon, will not be out-toughed.

After the highly questionable T, it was Sion that grabbed Cooper and laughed in his chest. That's a 22 year old grabbing his little brother and diffusing the situation. Veteran leadership.

Impressions:

Cooper was otherworldly

Tyrese had his best game in quite a while on both sides of the ball

Our bigs were not able to stop BC inside

Evans was a spark

Kon didn't have anything going tonight

Proctor had another subpar game

The Proctor with 20 points on 7/12 shooting? I only caught the last 12 minutes admittedly but Tyrese looked solid and dialed in to me....

Grayson antics were dirty and no reasonable person could try to defe defend him. At least K suspended him
Grayson got suspended and removed as team captain mostly for his meltdown on the bench, after leaving the game. Although the ACC was looking for punishment for the repeated trips. The meltdown is way off the leadership taught by West Point.

BC is the hardest place to win in the 15-team ACC. (I'm giving CA/Stanford/SMU a free pass for 3 years.) It reminds you of Wally Wade under Franks/Roof. I usually make that road trip except when the entire state of Maine buys up tickets before 6 months before they usually go on sale. It's not hard to forget one trip when Duke was #1 and the game only got a 10-second blue screen on Boston nightly news. (It coincided with the revelation that a local pro team was eating chicken in the clubhouse.) When you have all of those obstacles, something has to give: recruiting, coaching, character, etc.

Grant might be able to win at a lower level (AAC, A-10, Patriot), but he's not going to be at BC past 2025 or 2026. Flagg & Co. won't have to play them again as they aren't going to make the ACC tournament along with Miami and 1 TBD team.

Really curious if we’ll head anything official on that Flagg technical. I’ve yet to see an explanation anywhere.
No. If the T is deemed unwarranted by Bryan Kersey, the most that has happened in the past has been a private reprimand. (Feinstein, A March to Madness, page unknown since I haven't read the book in 25+ years). This is the second year in a row Groover has been chief official at a road game with a T. Duke is 1-1 in those games (@BC 2025, @GT 2024).
