MBB: Duke 86, Wofford 35 Post Game Thread

Lot's of good stuff, Chillin.
Some things I like.
1) Patrick Ngongba... I hadn't seen Patrick play and I guess most of that came from him missing playing time his senior year in high school and being injured again this off season. He looked good in his 11 minutes. Moves very well, seems to have good hands. I was impressed with his rebounding. 6 boards and 5 of them offensive. He could have helped against Kentucky.
2) Issiah James... Yes, he's always looking for his shot, but he was open and didn't force anything. Those 14 points in 12 minutes was outstanding. He can help this team in my opinion. Might have helped against Kentucky.
3) Assists for the game: Cooper 6/3, Kon 4/0 Sion 4/1 and Caleb 2/1. This to me was why we got so many good looks from 3. We didn't do that well against Kentucky.
4) FTs.. We made 10 of 11 with the only miss coming from Harris. I hope this kind of FT shooting continues.
5) Sion and Kahman seem to be almost 100%.

All of this is good, but we need to remember it was against a poor team and game pressure wasn't there. I want to see more of the same against the good teams coming up. We need to tighten up the defense and not give up so many open looks on 3s and we need to move the ball on offense. Share the dang basketball.

GoDuke!
Who is this you speak of? Isaiah Evans? Sion James? ... I jest, sorta...
In seriousness, I like the "Baby Ingram" nickname someone came up with for Isaiah...

I just hope that this Isaiah James fellow is a cagey veteran deadeye shooter who is built like a linebacker and not a rail thin teenager with questionable defense, modest shooting ability, and a bad shoulder. :)

Great bounce back game. Glad Sion’s shoulder seems OK. Good to see Patrick out there. I like his game, he will help us, Proctor shot well. But here is the final thing: Coach Scheyer has got to play Evans more minutes as the season goes on. The boy can drill it! He will really give our offense a great boost.

Been traveling so this may have been covered. We really need to improve defensively on our D switches. Wof had waaaay too many open threes, did not make many but were wide open

Metrics

Total domination of this one on the scoreboard. Not as dominant as the score would suggest (they missed a lot of shots), but still dominant. Especially as we clearly took our foot off the gas in the second half.

OFFENSE
Possessions: 64.3 (a slow pace)
oRtg: 133.7 (123.5 adjusted; would be #1 in the country, though again way too early to truly assess adjusted ratings)
eFG%: 61.3% (outstanding)
3pt%: 42.1% (very good)
2pt%: 58.3% (very good)
%threes: 61.2% (extremely high)
FT rate: 17.7% (awful; this is what happens when you shoot a bunch of 3s)
OR%: 45.2% (fantastic)
TO%: 15.5% (solid)
a/to: 2.4 (very good)
%assisted: 80.0% (VERY high)
fast break pts: 5 (not great)

DEFENSE
dRtg: 54.4 (56.8 adjusted; would be by a mile #1 in the country, though still too early to say much about that)
eFG%: 28.9% (amazing)
3pt%: 15.1% (probably "should" have made about 7-8 more 3s based on our defense... which would have still resulted in a blowout win)
2pt%: 37.5% (excellent)
%threes: 57.9% (very high; thankfully they missed a TON of them)
FT rate: 5.3% (amazing; with the same reasoning as above as to why it is so low)
DR%: 70.7% (okay)
TO%: 29.5% (amazing)
a/to: 0.47 (excellent)
%assisted: 68.0% (poor)
stl%: 17.1% (excellent)
blk%: 12.5% (2pt shots) (strong)
fast break pts: 3 (great)

In terms of the "four factors", we won the rebounding battle convincingly, we won the turnover battle convincingly, we won the shooting battle convincingly, and we slightly edged them in the FT battle. That will result in a blowout, which is what we got. The game was over mathematically with almost 10 minutes left.

As for the defense, it's true that the results are a bit deceiving in that Wofford missed a ton of very open 3s. But even if they make 13 (or 39%) instead of 5, it's still a blowout win (especially as we wouldn't have completely taken the foot off the gas over the last 10 minutes). We still forced a ton of turnovers, kept them from hitting 2s, and kept them off the FT line.

Through four games, this team has clearly shown the ability to overwhelm their opponent. Had they shot even remotely okay against UK, they'd have likely won that one going away as well. The game against Arizona will be a nice test to see how the team responds to its first road game and its first true test since the tough beat in Atlanta last week.

I only saw the second half but under 10 minutes they stopped running any sort of real offense and were just jacking 3s. A few times they did pass the ball around a couple of times before shooting but only a couple of them were what I'd call good looks. The game wasn't in doubt at that point, but I'm concerned about Jon's devotion to the ISO style offense that K ran so much during his last 10 years. Ball movement seems to be the new meta, as the kids say, and Duke has more than enough talented ball handlers and passers to go more in that direction.
