MBB: Duke 72, KU 75 Post-game Thread

No, go ahead and say it. Who do you want to replace Scheyer with? He was 27-9 and 27-9 in his first two seasons. There are lots of better coaches, right? Clearly he is not working out. Give us a couple of names. Or perhaps you don't understand basketball?
You do understand that it's ok to say Jon struggles coaching offense and at the end of games without saying fire him and burn him in the street right? It's year 3 and he's got to figure it out, it's ok to criticize repeated mistakes.

Re Khaman: he played pretty good defense on Dickinson. And on offense, well, you need a creator to get him the ball. I’m not sure Duke has one outside of k2
Bingo. I thought Khaman would give us the lob threat we lacked last year. But it takes two to tango, and it's not clear we've got a PG capable of maximizing the big man's rim rattling.

If I’m Proctor I’m annoyed the last play wasn’t drawn up for me. He had a good shooting night and deserved a chance at the end.

After tonight it seems that Foster has a shorter leash than others. Not sure why his struggles got him relegated to the bench but the same wasn’t true for others.
Proctor is getting all his looks off catch and shoot plays created by other guys. He is knocking down the shots for sure but he is not our best playmaker.

Maybe we should bench the kid??? I mean come on. He's our best 3 point shooter. He's being leaned on a ton as a freshman. This was the #1 team in the country and he had 8 assists. Give the kid some room to improve.
You’re right he is being leaned on a ton. Nonetheless his shooting against better teams is concerning. At no point did I say he wouldn’t improve nor did I suggest he should be benched.

Right now this team is not better than Zions or Banchero teams. Will coop end up looking as good as either of them? We'll see, but I see a Sweet 16 exit as of right now. Kon has to mimic what McCain did last year. He has to hit his 3s period. Foster isn't a PG and need to be focusing on scoring and being aggressive

I don’t really fault Kon nor Scheyer on that last turnover from Kon. The two cutters just ruined the spacing and made defending that play easier for Kansas. These guys are still learning how to play together. It’s November. Grabbing a #1 seed is probably out the window and there will be a few or more conference losses. But I still feel like there is potential for this team to be a very dangerous ~3 seed come March.

Anything less than 17-3 would be unacceptable. ACC is bad again.
I would be thrilled with 17-3 but don’t expect to get there. Other teams have really good coaches, and players, and traditions, and home courts. I love our team but some folks don’t understand the landscape of college basketball today.

Defense so far has been good. Tonight was different— but we were playing the number 1 team. Kansas pretty much had their way with us on offense, especially Dickinson.

And I agree. It’s early on, but a number 1 seed is all but eliminated.
That’s a big overreaction. There’s going to be a LOT of losses over the next four months, many of which will be very unexpected. Theres a reason the preseason Top 4 are very rarely the No. 1 seeds. Lots of season to go, and our analytics are going to still look very good going forward. A 3 point loss to the No. 1 team isn’t a killer.

Take it easy. Did you read the first sentence in my post? I’m really glad Jon is our coach and hope he will be for the next 35 years. I’m just pointing out that he has room for improvement, and saying that should be okay without being lambasted here.
Yeah, I'm sensitive to anybody who begins a statement with "I'm glad Jon is our coach but..."

It's his third year. We just played the #1 team to a stalemate. You don't have to preface criticism like Jon is on the hot seat.

I like this take. Hope we don't slide to the four line like last year. Having to take out the number 1 seed in the Sweet 16 took something out of us last spring, or that's at least how I explain to myself how poorly we shot the ball in the regional final.

We played like a top 10 defense tonight. We held Kansas 9 points under what they should average (per 100 poseessions)....which is a top-10-20 performance.

There's a reason duke is currently the #1 defense. If you want to see an actual team whose had the other team's way had with them, check out Uconn's past 2 games...where they are rightfully fallen all the way to 60th in defense.

Duke's offense is the blemish right now, and that seems very very fixable to me.

Excuses, excuses. This is a bad loss any way you look at it. Made worse considering the almost identical way they lost to Kentucky a week prior.

This is such a frustrating take. Losing by 3 to the number 1 team in the nation is "not a bad loss any way you look at it".

I like Scott's take - that this team will be difficult to upset - is the best takeway. But we aren't - YET - as good - AS A TEAM - as a the more veteran, as-talented, teams against whom we directly recruit against like Kentucky and Kansas.

I'm certain that I did not think about any of the teams of the last few years in the same way.

This reads like we just lost a home game against Virginia Tech. I mean come on. Some perspective.
Lots of posts in this thread read that way. Some actually made me laugh out loud. Maybe I could understand it if we got destroyed, but we didn't.

We are six games into the season with two returning players and with three freshmen playing half our minutes. We've had people declare that Flagg should literally never have the ball in his hands down the stretch, that Kon simply cannot shoot at this level, plus a laundry list of things that Scheyer is getting wrong. Oh, and apparently losing to Kansas is a bad loss.

Any loss to Kansas stings. But sometimes ... and hear me out here ... teams bringing in six new players take more than six games to come together. It's November. There are plenty of positive signs, and there is plenty of time for this team to learn from their mistakes, and to correct them or otherwise make adjustments.

As kAzE noted, Kansas has not played near this level all year. Playing like this, they deserve the hype.

We looked young at first, then we adjusted and punched with them the rest of the way. The stats were very similar save for them out rebounding us, and that was a huge factor.

Lots to work on, but lots to work with. Go Duke!
and free throws they were 11-12 we were 13-18...those points matter. we can tighten up there..even though as a team we shot well from 3 ,,,KK 0-8 and Gillis 1-5 hurt...Gillis shot like 47% last year...agree with ya ...lots to work with...freshmen feeling that pressure in big time college games and 6 year guys, 24 year olds etc etc. a lot different than high school ball where you the big dog on the court...kinda tell it with the butterfinger hands, slips and reverses into teeth of defense...we will learn...love the team chemistry. they seem to really like each other and can't really say that about some years...we aren't even to December and we've been blessed with great games against top ten teams...need to play these big time non conference games often, whew that was a game with a lot of emotion both ways. I'm wiped..can't wait for next one !!

I don’t have any idea what will happen, but to say we are a sweet 16 exit at this point in November is a laughable take IMO.

“Losing by 3 to a number 1 team” is missing the proper context.

As for point 2: Last years team was very good. Just lost to an extremely hot NC state team. Did you not think last year’s team could win the whole thing after the sweet 16 win??
