MBB: Duke 71, Jacksonville 44 Post-Game Thread

Schutt can't shoot. Reeves do not understand burning his redshirt. Young was the MOM! Filipowski and Mitchell were good. Everyone else not sharp. Proctor could not score. Grandison . My pregame predictions were all completely off. However we won with a much bigger margin than I expected. I am happy with the Win. Rebounding was much better than Fayetteville State. I like Scheyer substitutions. He is using a lot of people. Be interested to hear tonight's press conference.Lively needs to start playing. I am not a calf expert, but its been 2 weeks.

Injuries are opportunities, although we don’t like to talk about that side of things. Mark and Jaylen got more PT today than they might have if Lively and Whitehead were on the floor, and they looked great. It’s gonna be hard to keep Mark out of the starting lineup, and keep Blakes out of the rotation.

Kyle’s play reminded me of what the podcast crew talked about when they got that “confidential footage” of a scrimmage from the summer… apparently Kyle looked very blah, then just turned it on and dominated. He didn’t dominate, but second half Kyle was a different guy than first half Kyle. The guy we saw grabbing rebounds, bodying up defensively, and nailing threes confidently could be a major X-factor this squad.

Ryan Young is limited defensively which is why he came in with a specific role to fill. But man can he fill that role. I’m not sure if there’s ever been a center who can be classified as a “microwave” off the bench, but Ryan might be that.

If Jeremy shoots like that from 3 consistently, everything gets easier.

Oh yeah, we played without two of the top freshmen in the country and looked pretty darn good. I’m very happy.

Regarding Reeves…maybe prepping for Lively not being back for awhile?

Painfully obvious…..a team with undeniable talent, but an immaturity that is, at times, painful.

P.s. put Schutt on waivers

Let’s not overreact on Schutt. Reports that he was going to be in the rotation were probably very optimistic. He obviously came in with a directive to do what he does, which is shoot. I’d rather he be doing so confidently than being timid when he gets minutes. This is a freshman whose impact in a Duke jersey may not come this year, and that’s ok.

I get the sense Reeves burning his redshirt may be due to him thinking he has more pro prospects than originally thought. If so, and he isn’t planning on being around 5 years, than why not help his development for next year by getting him minutes?

Proctor didn’t score but seemed snakebitten. He looked good creating for others and defensively. Not worried about that at all.

This iteration of this team, without D&D, is a “no alpha“ team, but a team full of players who can score 20 points on any given night. Tonight it was Roach, Flip and Mitchell. Maybe tomorrow, meaning Friday, it’ll be Grandison and Proctor,… And Roach. Let’s see. This team is figuring it out with their top two newcomers on the bench. Color me optimistic.

Proctor 0-8 from the field and only 2 assists. Freshman nerves? I expected him to be more aggressive driving the ball.

Not Grandison’s best game. I thought everyone else played well.

Flip and Mitchell and Blakes all exceeded expectations. Blakes is going to push Proctor and Grandison for minutes. Ryan Young was really good. 6-6 from the floor.

How do the minutes get divided up between Lively, Flip, Mitchell and Young? Interesting question for Coach.

Am I making this up, or didn’t they change the rule for CBB so players can play a small number of games and still redshirt? I can find articles about the proposed legislation but nothing official.

Call me crazy but Jaylen Blakes was my favorite player to watch tonight. He looked like he belonged out there. Was good to see.

I like Blakes, but if he is pushing Proctor and Grandison for minutes by the meat of the season then we’re in some trouble.

All in all, a good opening win kicking off the Scheyer era. Roach was the floor general and knocking down threes. Mitchell will play as many minutes as he wants. Thought he looked great! It is going to be hard to keep Young off the floor, looked really good. Nice to see Flip knock down a couple of threes. Proctor couldn’t get his shot to fall tonight, but it will come. A good win over a veteran Jacksonville squad. I’m ready to see Lively and Whitehead in action. Go Duke!

This seems just the right take on the surprise appearance by Reeves.

I was impressed by Filipowski’s D-rebounding positioning, Young’s sweet footwork, Mitchell’s oddly-effective O. I expect Grandison will contribute in multiple ways. Blakes is unlikely to be a PG this season, as he isn’t yet a halfcourt O-initiator. But we don’t need a 4th-string O-initiator, as Roach, Whitehead, and Proctor are plenty.

This isn’t the most recent article, but it seems to indicate that you’re right. I know for CFB it’s 4 games. https://www.si.com/college/tmg/mark-blaudschun/college-basketball-redshirt

If so seems like he would have gotten more minutes as good as he looked in CTC.

Over who though? Ryan, Kyle, and Mark all played really well splitting the 4-5 minutes. Not sure you could justify playing him over any of those guys tonight.

Great first game for Coach Scheyer’s career win #1! 71-44 wins versus anyone is something I will take and I’m sure Duke will too.

Good game from Roach, with 16 points and 4-7 from 3! Mark Mitchell - my goodness. His ceiling is the heavens. I mean he could be a STAR at the NCAA level. His shot isn’t the prettiest aesthetically speaking but man is he accurate. And he hustled, is long, and runs the floor like a fleet footed Clydesdale - long strides! He is going to be a fun one to watch! Good recruiting coaches!

Flip with a double double, 10 points and 12 boards. Love to see that! Keep working kid!

Ryan Young is a basketball player. 6-6 from the floor for 12 points and 7 boards. His back to the basket post moves are impressive and effective. Good find coaches, way to mine the transfer portal! And thanks Coach Chris Collins!

Blakes continues to shine off the bench. He dove out of bounds for a steal tonight - darn impressive! He will be a great 6th or 7th man when Lively and Whitehead return.

Tough game for Proctor - keep working and keep your head up kid.

Duke owned the boards 44-25. Duke shot 7-11 from the line - not great! 10-29 from 3 was decent, not great!

Duke had 19 assists on 27 made field goals - great ball movement! Duke had 12 turnovers and forced 11, Duke can clean that up and I think they will!

Let’s Go Duke!

Schutt is fine. He’s not in the rotation this year but he will score a lot of buckets during his Duke career.

Flip with 12 rebounds. Mitchell with only 1. It’s just one game but may point to a Flip advantage.

If Jeremy can hit open 3s like that consistently this season, we will be a much better team and he will be an All American candidate.

Young had a great game tonight. But Reeves did outplay him pretty handily one on one in CTC. Just one data point I know…. I was surprised to see him at all tonight.
