MBB: Duke 67, Florida 66 Postgame Thread

I told my son I was so excited about this game because this will be a game for our guards to show us what they got. I expected ours to out play theirs. Their bigs are great so could play our “best in country” bigs to a draw. Fland was turnover machine and bad three point shooter coming into this game and Lee has been equally bad and we could have abused him. Well, not quite what I wanted to see.

Things I noticed:

How strong Cam is pushing Cheyelu under the basket (bully ball), to then get him close to let his footwork do the work.

Ngonba passing is so good. I wish our offense didn’t run thru our bigs always but I love watching out three bigs passing game.

Evans is in three point shooting slump as he is 20 for 62 and is trending to 30%. I would run the offense more thru him as he now has complete game with slashes to the basket. Why, because he can work his way out of shooting slump, but most importantly he is one of only good FT shooters on the team,

I would cut Khamenia some slack as he hurt his ankle in the game. I think he is really critical to the team as he keeps our offense moving and on defense has nose for the ball.

Was hoping for Foster to step up more. I think he really is a great three point shooter, 44% right now, so wish he could give us more offense. At least he gives us good defense with his size.

We need more of a physical presence from Patrick. He had 3 rebs at intermission and got just 2 in the second half. Of his 11 total points 8 came in the first half.

We got hammered on the boards. Our bench contributed a total of 8 points.

Yes, we won (Yay) but Cam needs help.
Agreed we need to rebound better, but they had some really ugly misses on 3's where the rebound went deep versus to the play blocking out.

Did anyone have a chance to replay the sequence where Foster tried to save and Pat tried to establish himself in the frontcourt to avoid the over and back?
My DVR won't allow frame by frame review, but I'm not so sure that Pat didn't actually succeed (the refs called an over and back anyway).

I was flummoxed when Duke took a timeout after a made field goal with a little over 2 mins left in the game. Anyone with an idea behind what seemed very odd and, perhaps, a mistake?

We’re making 71.5% of our FTs so far. Not good, but better than I thought.

Caleb, Nik and Dame are all less than 60% and Evans upper 80s ( the others in the 70s).

As discussed, Caleb’s FTs must improve if he has the ball in late game situations.
Agree. It has happened several times, however give him credit as he stole the ball at a crucial point and was then fouled

Defending the inbounds pass is what he was put on this earth to do
Most guys guarding the inbounds in that situation start jumping up and down with their hands high as soon as the ref hands the ball to the in-bounder. But Maliq didn't do that - instead he waited and timed his jump for when Haugh drew his arm back. Absolutely incredible play.

Isaiah Evans missed seven three-point shots in a row, but he sure made one when it counted!
I think Isaiah getting to shoot two pressure FTs on the technical foul may have helped him find the stroke he needed for the last shot. Those were important.

More versatile? We had Cooper Flagg last year as our 4 who the Mavs were trying at PG. Kon had the size and skill to play 1-3 and probably 1-4. Flagg 1-4. Sion 1-3. Proctor probably 1-3. I can’t think of how we were less versatile last year. We had 3 centers who all brought something to the table.
I think it's not that we have more versatile players this years, but that the team can give a lot more different looks. For example the 3 big look with Pat, Maliq, and Boozer - Duke didn't do that last year. Last year's team was long and switchable, but this year they can play Maliq-Cam-Sarr-Evans-Foster and switch 1-5 with even more length. We haven't seen much of it, but they could play smallball with Cam at the 5 surrounded by shooters. Last year Cooper and Kon were going to be on the floor at all times, and they basically were a 2 and a 4, so there was less to rotate around them. This year it's just Cam who needs to be out there, who mostly plays 4 but could also be a 3 like last night or a 5, and therefore there are more options to put 4 different guys around him, if that makes sense.

Was this the one after we made a 3? Coach K loved doing that too, calling a TO immediately after we make a 3 so something Jon has clearly picked up from Coach K. I haven't had a chance to ask either of them why, but I'm sure they have some rationale on it ....

I just watched the presser, I haven’t seen Jon that wired after a game maybe ever. I can’t see him going to sleep anytime soon. Me, on the other hand…
What I noticed about this presser (and honestly many of his previous ones) is that he takes almost total ownership of his players errors -- "I have to help them get better" seems to be his mantra. I don't know that I've EVER heard than come out of another college coaches mouth as frequently as Jon says it. I really like our coach.
