MBB: Duke 67, Florida 66 Postgame Thread

The blackout was a bust. The crowd was pretty weak tonight, sleepy and dull. Crazies were too busy looking for themselves on the stadium screen. C- we don't inflate grades in Cameron. Boozer, Cam took a real pounding inside, unbeknownst to Roger the Ref. Game seemed like it would never end. We don't need gimmicks in Cameron, just pay attention and cheer, kids.
Honestly no idea what you're talking about. I was frustrated with the noise levels in the first 10 minutes of the second half but otherwise from my vantage point in the grad section that was one of the loudest Duke game I've been too. The noise when Florida was on offense in the first half was genuinely deafening. The gamebreaks were pretty quiet but I also think there's way too many gimmicks on the screen in CIS nowadays distracting everyone.

Hot take though: we need to stick with Let's Go Duke on almost all offensive possessions in these big games. It's the only truly threatening and rhythmic chant we have during play. The others are too singsongy and don't tend to get non-students involved.

Bottom line, Florida looked like a real title contender for the first time all season and we went blow for blow in an extremely exciting hard fought game that went down to the wire.

It was glorious.

I wish I still smoked so I could have a cigarette!

I've got to also take up for the atmosphere in Cameron tonight. It was electric and packed early by the students. Jon commented in his postgame that he was so appreciative of the students and crowd. He mentioned tents and sleeping bags appearing a couple days before the game. He also said the sound after Evans hit his three was the loudest he had experienced in Cameron. My other shout out is for the sound folks in Cameron reacting to how to counter opposing fans like last year's Auburn invasion. When Florida took their late lead their fans started chants which the students reacted to and were countering, but then a deafening song came out of the speakers totally drowning out the Gator faithful. The Blackout worked and was a sight and atmosphere to experience, but may it rarely return! Great night to have been in our seats with a solo Gator behind us. Her significant other had on a Duke Jersey to offset her Florida one. That's what college sports should be about. Tonight it was in the best way. Great job students and Cameron faithful. The memories are already etched. Hope the Spartan faithful don't experience Saturday what we did tonight.

Really surprised we had that many blocks against a huge Fla team. Evans’ block of the 3 pointer was amazing.

Fland had a huge 4 minute stretch near the end when they grabbed the lead. Finally stopped him on that last possession.

Evans has dramatically improved in taking it to the rack off the dribble and on cuts. We were all hoping that would happen this year. If he gets the 3 pointers rolling again he’ll be tough to contain.

Are we a good 3 point shooting team? Seems like we should be, but are not (yet).

Awesome victory. DDMF.

Great result on a night we did not play our best! Two things they bothered me that I don’t think anyone has mentioned yet.

1) Scheyer wasting a challenge on that out of bounds call on Maliq in the first half. I feel like we lose a disproportionate number of challenges and need a better system.

2) Second game in a row that we let the lead guard (s) get going a bit later in the second half. A case of our defense getting tired or the guards figuring us out a bit?

Here are Duke's best 15 block percentages over the past 20 years (plus this year). 150 minutes minimum.

1. Derreck Lively 2023: 12.7%
2. Mark Williams 2022: 11.4%
3. Mark Williams 2021: 9.6%
4. Marques Bolden 2019: 8.5%
5. Patrick Ngongba 2026: 7.7%
6. Wendell Carter 2018: 7.6%
7. Shelden Williams 2006: 7.5%
8. Marques Bolden 2018: 7.4%
8. Theo John 2022: 7.4%
10. Javin DeLaurier 2019: 7.0%
11. Khaman Maluach 2025: 6.8%
12. Chase Jeter 2017: 6.7%
12. Marshall Plumlee 2014: 6.7%
14. Isaiah Evans 2026: 6.2%
14. Sean Stewart 2024: 6.2%
Basically half of this list is from Scheyer’s tenure as head coach. Any idea if we doing something different on defense to cause that or is it just a fluke?

Generally don't think we should ever be challenging in the first half unless it's blatantly obvious to be honest. In college ball any play can be a momentum swing but that was a really weird choice from Scheyer.

Great win, elite defense. But someone else needs to step up and score. Can’t have Foster, Sarr, Cayden, and Nik all being complete non factors on offense.

GREAT WIN - but this holds water...

Literally Cam and one other person seem to score most games. Sometimes Evans.. this game Ngongba but we need THREE CONSISTENT scorers imo. Most top ten teams to get a FF do. And FTs. Have to hit 70+ percent in big games.

Look, I get it - 9-0 I think with STRONG WINS !

And some guys justify themselves on D - Maliq, Caleb F, and today Ngongba. Love Caleb on the perimeter D and Maliq - I was thinking "I wonder if he could tip this last pass?" man is amazing.

other thoughts - xavian lee was a point of discussion. He did not shoot well 4 points on 10 shots is bad. which has been his thing except vs a team or two. And I see what Holden meant. 4 assists to 13 turnovers. not that 13 turnovers is that bad. a lot of the time that's about our average. Its the 4 to 13 ratio! all one on one ball. Our assist to turnover was 13 to 12 for the team which is standard 1to1 for a whole team.

finally, and shockingly, we were the deeper team in a tough ball game.

Some stats: The Gators outrebounded Duke 44-33 and had 20 offensive boards. They are tall dudes. Duke shot 25-56 and 7-26 on 3s. Gators shot 25-67 and 7-28 on 3s. Pat and Isaiah had 5 blocks, Pat was our point-guard with 5 assists and 2 turnovers. On Isaiah's big 3 pointer, it looked like that shot had the best arc of any 3 pointer he shot all night. Lots of things to work on but we're still 9-0.

GoDuke!

Yeah, and I think all of them contributed SOMETHING. Darren had a couple big hustle plays. Dame and Nik struggled offensively but played their butts off defensively. Cayden made a big bucket.

We were able to battle through not having someone playing well at the 3 because we had so many options to fill that void, including the super big lineup (which, BTW, I called being a factor way back on the Stats Game pod ;) ). This team is more versatile than last year’s at this point of the season, 100%.
More versatile? We had Cooper Flagg last year as our 4 who the Mavs were trying at PG. Kon had the size and skill to play 1-3 and probably 1-4. Flagg 1-4. Sion 1-3. Proctor probably 1-3. I can’t think of how we were less versatile last year. We had 3 centers who all brought something to the table.

Great win against a tough team.

Can I nitpick? Im angry that we let a 15 point lead go! This team can be so so good if we can just kill off teams more consistently in 40 minutes.

Heres a nice stat: "85 straight wins when we are leading by 15+ points". Never in doubt :)

What a win. Evans and Cam will take us far.

Golden is the whiniest coach I’ve seen in a long time. In addition to trying to get the BS flagrant on Brown upgrades to a 2, he was trying to throw off Brown and walk in in front of him after Brown had the ball, then stood only 3 ft away - the refs had to make him stand further back.

Great job by Duke tonight ha dealing physicality of Florida. Slim has a shooter’s mindset, I like the confidence and hopefully after hitting that clutch bucket he’s out of his slump.

Super impressed with Boozer’s pivots and layups against taller players. Tough win and a good win tonight.
If you didn't care for Golden as of the final buzzer, try watching his presser after the game (YouTube available).
What a schmo......
Golden whiny baby
